I’ve been easing into the habit of running 3 times a week in preparation for a 5K race this summer (fingers crossed). I have to say, yesterday’s training run was so much easier on the treadmill with hype music and a great ocean view! It was the first time in YEARS that I jogged a whole mile without stopping to walk.
I’ve been here in Hawaii for almost 9 months(!) now and every few weeks, I still pinch myself because I can’t believe I get to live my ideal island lifestyle. I often think back to the moment when I made the decision to come here, more specifically the day I actually bought my one-way ticket from Washington, DC to Honolulu. Man..that was both a scary and exciting day!
Many women in our Happy Black Woman community think decisions like this – relocating, traveling, quitting your job and running your business full-time – take a lot of money. Fortunately, that’s a FALSE belief. I mean, I’m not independently wealthy by any stretch of the imagination.
The most important factor in whether you can make major changes in your life is actually your MINDSET. If you believe in yourself and your goals, you CAN and you WILL do what it takes to get the money or the time or the opportunities available to you.
Your mindset is what allows you to step outside of your comfort zone and manifest the blessings that have already been prepared for you.
Your mindset is what allows you to push past your limits. To get what you really want, you have to refuse to believe your own excuses.
Now you might not to want to hear this, but it’s the truth (and I happen to be in the truth-telling business):
The only person that can hold you back is YOU!
I’m living proof that when you take responsibility for your own happiness, you can completely transform your life.
Leave a comment: What limits are you placing on yourself right now? What would happen if you released them?

Stepping out of comfort zone is not in sync with our psyche. We want to live a life full of leisure but do not want to work, we want to stay fit but then exercising is an issue; what is to be done?? There is this constant battle between wants, desires and needs. I understand what you are trying to express Rosetta, we are the one who create self limits and then become comfortable with them. Thanks for sharing a thoughtful post :)
Thank you so much for your honesty. I’ve been reading and actively working to change my mindset because as Les Brown says “the mind is a fight for territory and once we stop fighting for what we do want, what we don’t won’t will surely consume us.” So thanks for reminding me of that and helping me to confirm for me that it is possible to do anything that I want to do as long as I’m open and willing to receive it.
I’m also planning to relocate for a better standard of life and increased sunshine. My perfectionism and fear of it not working out has been stopping me from making any real progress but I recently made a commitment to start train by the steps to make it happen.
I really enjoyed this article! Been thinking about relocating for better opportunities and also a new start as iam a recently divorced mom of two. You are so correct when you stated that we are the only ones that can hold ourselves back! I am ready to move forward! Thanks
