HBW073: Kara Stevens, A New Conversation About Black Women And Money

January 11, 2017 | By Rosetta |

Black women and money are not often spoken of in the same sentence. There are so many negative mindsets or pieces of emotional baggage that we black women carry surrounding money that have to be changed. Thankfully, we have some sisters who have been down that road ahead of us and are willing to help. Kara Stevens is one of those women. She’s done the hard work of changing her own mindset to facilitate a different way of dealing with and earning money. In this conversation, Rosetta and Kara talk about the baggage and mindsets that hold Black Women back and chart a way forward. You’ll want to hear this one.

The emotional hurdles surrounding money have got to be overcome.

Too many times we black women are living our lives according to beliefs and emotional baggage that no longer apply. Kara Stevens shares how as a child her dominant belief about men and money was that men cannot be trusted with money. She had to do a lot of self-examination and personal work to overcome the negative beliefs she had around money and realized on her path to healing that she was learning things that many of her sisters needed to know. It wasn’t long before she was beginning to speak about what she was learning and in time it created a business that empowers black women to think and live differently in relationship to money. You can find out how Kara has walked that path and has come to such a healthy place, on this episode.

It’s a form of self-love to ask for a reasonable payment for your services.

One of the things Kara had to realize as she began examining her beliefs and practices surrounding money was that she was scared to ask for a significant payment for the services she was providing people. But a revelation that changed her entire approach to the topic was that it is actually a form of self-love to ask for reasonable payment for your services. It’s not greedy. It’s not unkind. It’s right for you and right for those you are serving. And ultimately it enables you to provide for yourself and your family as you should. Kara shares many insights like this during this conversation with Rosetta so take the time to listen.

Saving money is great. But you need to switch to thinking about earning more money.

Every financial planner or coach advises that you set up a way to consistently save money. That’s great. Kara Stevens, Rosetta’s guest on this episode does as well. But she also points out that at some point you need to get past the fundamental principle of saving money and begin to move toward the possibility of making more money. There are two ways to approach meeting your needs, and making more money is surely the more fun and liberating way of the two. Kara gives some great advice about how you can get your mind around the idea and what you can do to begin moving in that direction, on this episode.

If you can’t find the money to invest in yourself, nobody else will.

It’s hard to think about spending money for self-improvement options such as coaching or training when you don’t have much money to spend. But you will eventually come to the point where you realize that nobody else is going to spend the time, make the effort, or invest the money in your growth. You have to do it. So you need to find a way to maximize your ability to save and make money so that you can equip yourself with the mindset and skills it will take to get your life moving in a different direction. You can learn a lot about this sort of personal development mindset switch on this episode of Happy Black Woman.

HBW070: Dafina Lovelace – Yoga and Meditation For Greater Peace And Success

December 25, 2016 | By Rosetta |

Rosetta admits that for many years she thought of yoga and meditation as things that weren’t for her. In her mind, they were things skinny white women did. But through relationships with people like her guest on this episode, Dafina Lovelace, she’s discovered that the practice of yoga and the principles that serve as its foundation is a powerful way she can calm herself, relieve stress, and center herself around her purpose. All of that enables her to accomplish more and move her success to even higher levels. On this episode, Rosetta and Dafina chat about how a happy black woman with an MBA and a tech background became a certified yoga instructor and leveraged that skill into a business for accomplished and aspiring black woman entrepreneurs.

Why every black woman should try Yoga and meditation.

As Rosetta and Dafina chatted about the stigma that yoga often has they both agreed that every black woman should at least do their homework when it comes to understanding the principles and practice of yoga. Both of them have found it to be a soothing, life-changing practice that has created space for thought, better ideas, and mental energy that enables greater creativity and drive. You can hear their conversation and take some first steps toward unlocking the power yoga could have in your life, by listening to this episode.

Are you like so many people who have a fear of being still – of truly thinking?

One of the things about yoga that seems hokey or strange to people is the meditation aspect of the practice. It’s an intentional time of placing your body and mind into a state of quiet and concentration. But that sounds weird to many people. They don’t like to be alone with their thoughts, especially while striking strange physical poses! During this conversation Rosetta and her guest, Dafina Lovelace talk about the role the physical aspects of yoga plays in enabling deeper concentration and how that time of quiet and peace empowers the rest of life. You can hear it on this episode.

One of the questions Rosetta asked her guest, Dafina Lovelace during this conversation was about the daily habits and practices that she employs to keep her life on track. It may not sound like an especially interesting question until you realize that Dafina is a professional yoga instructor. As Rosetta expected, there are quite a few gems in what Dafina had to share, including a refusal to keep her cell phone in the room as she sleeps. You can hear more great life hacks and tips from Dafina, so be sure you listen.

The #1 piece of advice for black women entering the business world.

As Rosetta and her guest, Dafina Lovelace wrapped up their conversation, Rosetta asked Dafina for her best piece of advice for fellow black women who are considering a step into the entrepreneurial or business world. Dafina said the main thing she’s learned is that it’s preferable to run outside the pack. You need to trust yourself. You need to see the unique gifts you have and learn that they are meant to be leveraged for the good of others. You don’t have to do things the same way as everyone else. That puts you in a unique place that allows your true self to serve the world. Find out what Dafina means when she says, “Trust yourself,” on this episode.

Do you struggle to trust yourself?

That kind of track record could cause anyone to begin doubting themselves, to find it hard to trust that they are even capable of making the right call when important decisions arise. If you struggle with those things, you’re not alone. Kimberly Dunlap was plagued with the same kinds of insecurity and doubt until she determined that she was going to overcome. On this episode you’ll hear Kimberly’s story and find out how the insights she’s learned on her own journey to self-confidence can help you learn to trust yourself again and move toward greater things.

How to know if you’re living out a charade that’s not authentic.

You’ve seen people on TV and internet videos who seem to have it all together, but there’s something wrong in the way they come across, something that doesn’t seem real or authentic. None of us want to be that kind of person but we can easily fall into the trap of putting on a facade for others to see. We do it to feel better about ourselves and to hide our insecurities. How do you know if you’re living out that kind of charade? There’s one clear sign. You don’t have joy. Kimberly Dunlap shares how a lack of joy is the main tip-off to an inauthentic life, on this episode of Happy Black Woman with Rosetta Thurman.

About JUNE NZINGA WHITE

June White is on an Afrikan centered journey. She did not begin her life’s journey with an Afrikan-centered mentality. She was taught that education is everything. So she received a BS in Accountancy and a Masters in Taxation from one of the top 20 Universities in the country. After 2.5 years of feeling lost in the accounting industry, she needed a change. She realized she was exhausting her energy in the wrong field and for the wrong purpose. Everyone kept telling her “just be yourself,” but when she tried to do that, she drew a blank. She didn’t know who she was or where she came from. She knew nothing of my history. There was this intense feeling of shame screaming out “how am I supposed to be myself if I don’t know anything about my past?” After that realization, June began searching and came across the following quote from Marcus Garvey: “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” This quote led her to begin doing extensive research about her true history; which led her to the start of an arduous, yet rewarding journey towards an Afrikan-centered Life. One of her newfound duties is to lead people towards Afrikan excellence by giving them knowledge. Another is to lead by example.

December 14, 2016 | By Rosetta |

If someone were to tell you that you need to get your mind right, you may take offense. But what if they are right? What if there is something in the way you think about your life and the success that is possible that is limiting you from achieving what you’re made to do? Kendra Kay Woods has learned from her own experience that her personal mindset is one of the biggest things that has limited her from reaching the level of success that she’s destined to reach. You can hear her story and find out how she can help you get your mind right, on this episode of Happy Black Woman.

What will it take for you to finally start moving toward your calling?

So many women in the Happy Black community are part of the movement in concept but have yet to take action on the dreams they have deep inside. The fact that you have to accept wholeheartedly is this: Nobody is going to do the work for you. It’s YOUR work to do, YOUR calling to pursue. There are plenty of women in the community to help you but none who can do it for you. You’ve got to get your mind right and start taking action. This episode may serve as the catalyst that gets you going because Rosetta is talking with Kendra Kay Woods, a mindset coach and true woman of action. You’ll be inspired and challenged to practically begin moving – maybe for the first time.

Before you can invest in yourself you’ve got to get your mind right.

When we talk about getting your mind right what we’re really saying is that you’ve got to begin thinking along the lines of what is really true – about God, about yourself, and about the world you live in. You’ve got to push away the false beliefs that you’ve held onto since childhood, the beliefs that keep you from taking action, from believing that you can accomplish great things. Kendra Woods is on this episode of Happy Black Woman to both serve as an example of a woman who has overcome her own limiting beliefs and as a coach to give you some practical advice about overcoming your own false beliefs and get moving on a better road toward a greater life.

To change your life, start exploring something different, something outside your comfort zone.

Whatever desires you have deep inside, they are not there by accident. They didn’t just show up one day out of nowhere. You’ve been designed for a purpose to accomplish specific things and those desires are an expression of what it is you’re supposed to do. But in order to see something come of those things you desire, you’ve got take action. You’ve got to put yourself in a place where something more is required of you than you are used to giving. That is the place you’ll begin to see yourself come alive and head in new and exciting directions. Kendra Wood is your guide on that journey and she’s got lots of tips and insights for you to hear, so be sure you listen to this episode of Happy Black Woman.

The first thing you need to accept is that nobody is going to do it for you.

Everybody wants something more than they are currently experiencing. It’s easy to wish upon a star and hope that it comes about. But that’s simply not the way things work. You’ve been given life as a gift and it’s your responsibility to do something with it. You can’t wait for things to happen. You can’t wish things into reality. You’ve got to take action that leads to the results you want to see in your own life. On this episode of Happy Black Woman, Kendra Kay Woods describes the path she had to walk to come to a place where she was willing to take action and develop the vision and God-given talent she’d been given. It’s an inspiring story and great encouragement for any in the Happy Black Woman community who are tired of the same old life they’ve been living.

The first thing you need to accept is that nobody is going to do it for you @KendraKayWoods

HBW066: Kimberly Harden on How to Create Your Ideal Image With Confidence

December 7, 2016 | By Rosetta |

happy-black-woman-podcast_feat-_kimberly-harden_capital-letters_72-dpi

Every woman has an ideal image, that authentic self that is THEM. It has to do with their inner person and the way the outer is used to express it. On this episode of Happy Black Woman, Rosetta is chatting with Kimberly Harden, an expert at helping women discover their ideal image and learn how to confidently express it in their clothing choices, personal style, and interactions with others. It’s her mission to help you experience your ideal image from the inside out. Find out more from Kimberly on this episode.

HBW066: Kimberly Harden, Create Your Ideal Image With Confidence

Action steps to start showing up in the world in an authentic way.

You’ve got to have a strong foundation to build on if you are going to start showing up in the world authentically and with confidence. That starts with knowing who you are first of all and being confident in yourself, regardless if you feel you are overweight or too thin. Who you are is not defined by your body size, it’s defined by your belief in yourself – and THAT resides within. Kimberly Harden is going to help you understand how to integrate that level of confidence with your shopping and wardrobe choices, and how to put them together to express your ideal self.

What you wear on the outside should reflect what’s happening on the inside.

What should you do if you want to turn a corner and make some significant changes in your outer appearance so you can show up in the world with confidence? Assess where you are and come to terms with it. Then reflect on where you are headed, where you want to be. Once you have your eyes on that prize you need to reset your perspective about what it takes every day to head toward that goal. Then and only then are you ready to begin addressing your makeup and wardrobe, the things that will help you express your new self to the world in an external way. Find out how you can take practical steps to make the changes you desire, on this episode.

What you wear on the outside should reflect what’s happening on the inside

To be confident in the world, learn to be OK with who you are and HOW you are.

Too often, Kimberly Harden hears women wishing that their body is something different than it is. She has found that the most important thing women need to accept are the facts of who they are and HOW they are. Body size is not the litmus test of beauty. It’s not the thing that determines your worth. You’ve got to determine that entirely independent of your body size and appearance. Then you’ll be ready to find the clothes, makeup, and style that is uniquely you AS YOU ARE, not as who you wish you were. You can hear more of Kimberly’s insights on this episode.

What should you do if you are not clear on what you want to do?

When Rosetta asked Kimberly Harden what she would say to the woman who has a passion for something but doesn’t know if she should pursue it or not, Kimberly had three simple words: just do it. When you have a passion you not only owe it to yourself to get started pursuing it, you also owe it to the world. You don’t have that passion by accident, it’s God’s way of pointing you in the direction you are intended to go. If you take the time to listen to this conversation you’ll find Kimberly is full of great insights that will encourage you on your journey, so be sure you listen!

November 30, 2016 | By Rosetta |

You may be like the people Heidi Harris was meeting. They had heard of the Law of Attraction but didn’t know anything about it. It was through a number of conversations like this that Heidi came to believe that she should make it her business (literally) to make sure that everyone in her circles and beyond knew what the Law of Attraction is and how to put it to work in her life. The rest is history. On this episode, Rosetta chats with Heidi about how she has traveled her journey and what it is she helps her clients do to amplify their lives. Be sure you take the time to listen.

A story of hardship turned to new perspective and life change.

As is the case with many entrepreneurs who make a dent in the world, Heidi Harris is a woman who has come to the place of success she is at via a very hard road. Personal losses and tragedies set the stage for her mind and spirit to be receptive to the things she needed to learn about herself and the way life works. On this episode of The Happy Black Woman podcast, you’ll get to hear Heidi’s story from her own lips and be inspired that nothing is too difficult for you to overcome so that you can make a better life for yourself.

Gratitude is the first step to building the life you want.

Nobody who gives a gift appreciates it if the person who receives the gift never expresses gratitude. That’s because gratitude is the natural response to receiving good things. But for some reason when it comes to the blessings of life that happen daily we tend not to be as grateful as we should. Instead, pessimism, complaint, and worry consume us. When you can learn to step out of your difficulties long enough to find what you can be grateful for in the situation, everything changes. Join Rosetta on this episode as her guest, Heidi Harris explains how the power of gratitude can serve you as the 1st step to a better life.

You have to make a commitment and diligently work toward your goals.

How many times have you heard somebody say, “I wish I had _____________.” It seems like you hear something like that every day. It’s fine to express a desire that you have to see something in your life be different. But it will never change unless you take steps to make it come about, and that begins with commitment. On this episode, Heidi Harris explains the significance of making a commitment to yourself and how that commitment can be leveraged to bring about the things you want in your life. You won’t want to miss this one.

What are the wrong beliefs that are holding you back?

Many people allow the path they’ve walked in life so far to dictate the direction and outcome of the path they walk in the future. It happens because they make assumptions about the future based on their past experiences, but the reality is that the past has nothing to do with the future except that it has prepared you to avoid the same mistakes and build something better. On this episode, you’ll hear a great deal of encouragement about how you can change the course of your life forever by changing the way you think. Be sure you listen.

You know how to take care of you. You just don’t do it. Right? There are so many reasons why – responsibilities, kids, business, family – there’s no end to the things that demand a piece of your time, a piece of you. It can easily feel like there’s no time left over to take care of yourself, but if you don’t figure it out you know that you’re going to crash eventually. Today’s guest is Rosetta’s friend, Aisha Moore an expert in self-care who teaches busy women like you how to care for themselves first so they can ensure that they have the energy to serve others at home and in their business. What IS self-care and why is it important?

When you think of self-care, what comes to mind? Is it a nice manicure or pedicure? Is it time alone, reading a book or enjoying your favorite drink? Those things definitely qualify as self-care but the concept and practice entail so much more than just those acts. Aisha Moore has learned the importance of self-care the hard way, experiencing her own health issues that pushed her to make some clear changes to the way she was living. Her story serves as both an example and an inspiration to women all over the world and you are sure to learn something as you listen to her tell about the transformation that the practice of self-care has had in her life.

Your self-care needs to match what’s going on in your life.

It’s impossible to take care of you by doing the exact things that other people do to take care of themselves. Each person is different and requires different things for the nurturing of their own soul. But there’s also the issue of what’s going on in your life. As the seasons of life come and go you will find that you need different self-care habits than you did before. On this episode, Aisha Moore shares how this phenomenon happens and how you can learn to be flexible and wise in the way you take care of yourself, so be sure you take the time to listen.

You need to practice self-care every day to be your optimal self.

Self-care is not something you should allow to be a hit and miss thing. You are not invulnerable. You are not free of the normal human weaknesses that we all fall prey to from time to time. But you can prevent much of the physical, emotional, and spiritual difficulties that threaten you by practicing self-care every day. On this episode, Aisha Moore shares a handful of ideas of how you can build self-care disciplines into your life on a daily basis. You’ll learn some fresh ideas for taking care of yourself that Aisha has seen help many others.

You have to make some hard decisions to make self-care a priority.

If you know you need to take care of you in order to be healthy you probably also know that you are going to have to make some tough decisions to ensure that it happens. You won’t stumble into self-care, you have to be intentional about it. On this episode, Aisha Moore tells Rosetta (and you) some great ways to set aside the time for self-care in your busy schedule and gives some ideas about how you can make the hard choices that are required if you are going to be your best self. Are you ready for the challenge? Listen to find out more.
