HBW025: Karla Hampton: Helping Women Connect with Their Bodies & Embrace Their Sensuality

February 9, 2016 | By Rosetta |

happy black woman podcast_feat _KARLA HAMPTON_CAPITAL Letters_72 DPI

Today’s guest is Karla Hampton. She’s a part of the Happy Black Woman tribe and is an inspiring woman on a mission to empower other women. Karla supports women through sex education and sexual wellness mentoring. Her goal is to help women embrace their sensuality and connect with what she believes is our birthright: pleasure. Karla was an attorney who discovered something was missing in her life. And so, she started a personal development journey that led her to the startling realization that she had been ignoring her own body’s needs for many years. It was time to change that. Through her personal journey she realized her mission was to help others to the same, which she does through her website Sensual Black Woman. Her conversation with Rosetta today is one that will inspire women everywhere to connect with their bodies and embrace their sensuality.

Why you must really get to know your #body, on this episode of Happy Black Woman

How Karla connected with her mission and started her own journey.

Like most women, Karla was in the habit of going through the motions. She was focused on her career. She was successful. And to outsiders it would seem as though she had it all. In reality, Karla knew something was missing. She started experiencing health issues, sleeplessness, and even weight gain. Karla would eventually be diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called Sjogren’s disease. That’s when she knew it was time to make some changes in her life. Her wake-up call came in the form of a coaching call with famed life coach Iyanla Vanzant. Karla realized it was time to connect with her body, her energy, her sensuality, and her sexuality.

The importance of reclaiming your power as a woman.

As Karla progressed through her journey, she began to heal some old wounds that had a deep impact on her sexuality. She started what she calls a “Yoni Safari”, or a journey to get to know her body and specifically her vagina. This connection, Karla says, is essential to our ability to understand our bodies. For Karla, the journey was ultimately about really knowing and loving her own body. She gained an understanding of the value of self-pleasure and sensual movement practices, which she shares with other women through her Pleasure Practice Mentoring program. Through this, Karla is able to fulfill her mission.

Sensual movement practice and other daily rituals.

Starting a journey like this can be uncomfortable at first. As women, we’re often taught to feel shame about our bodies, especially when it comes to sensuality. Karla explains how sensual movement has helped her embrace and love her own body. Making this a part of her daily routine is something that keeps Karla centered and connected to herself. She shares some other parts of her daily routine, including meditation, prayer, and setting an intention for the day. Building this connection takes time, but according to Karla it’s incredibly rewarding and our birthright as women. She shares some tips that can help you get started on your own pleasure practice.

Anything is possible, but nothing is promised.

In her own personal pleasure practice, Karla discovered her calling in life. Today, she offers women everywhere her services as a Pleasure Practice Mentor with a mission of helping women reconnect with themselves. Karla shares a book that helped to inspire her at the start of her journey along with her personal mantra: “Anything is possible, but nothing is promised.” Karla goes on to discuss the importance of reclaiming your power as a woman and why we all need to truly connect with ourselves. If you’re ready to start your journey, Karla has a tip to help you get started. This chat with Rosetta is enlightening, inspiring, and motivating. If you’re ready to connect with yourself in a whole new way, you don’t want to miss this episode of Happy Black Woman.

HBW024: Carol Sankar : Confident women make confident decisions

February 8, 2016 | By Rosetta |

happy black woman podcast_feat _CAROL SANKAR_01_CAPITAL LETTERS_72 DPI

Leadership expert Carol Sankar joins us today for this episode of Happy Black Woman. Carol developed The Confidence Factor for Women in Leadership. Today she is a business consultant specializing in working with executives and high growth business models. But her story starts at the beginning of her career. Carol was working in the Real Estate world, lonely and wondering where the other women were. She found herself as the only woman in meetings with men, feeling outnumbered, ignored and underestimated.  When she attempted to rally women to take action on opportunities, she was met with excuses, insecurity and a lack of confidence. It wasn’t a lack of opportunities available for women, they simply lacked the confidence to try. How did Carol come to this conclusion and turn an epidemic into a business? Find out on this episode of Happy Black Woman.

The study of 100 women unveiled the underlying problem

Carol went to work collecting data and studying 100 women for four years. These were women in various positions and seasons of life. Some were operating successful businesses and developing high level concepts. Carol provided them with endless resources, opportunities and personal support, but out of 100 women, only one “made it.” Only one used the resources, followed the steps and seized the opportunity to get out of her job and move into her ideal business pursuit. What Carol found was 99 women with low expectations, willing to remain average. They did not expect to be successful.  They were fearful of money, lived in fear of being judged, did not think they were equipped to compete in business realms, never thought they were ready, were continually getting ready to get ready, never sure enough and delayed making decisions until opportunities disappeared. Carol concluded that women were not positioning themselves for success. They were in the wrong room. Do you recognize your own voice in these excuses? Listen in to hear how you can be the one, and not part of the 99.

Recognize time as currency

Carol capitalized on the huge hole in confidence she found in her study. She recognized that the issue of confidence had to be addressed before women would move into positions of leadership. In this episode, Carol outlines action steps to recognize your excuses and begin competing in a world filled with opportunities. The first step is to recognize time as a form of currency.  On the exchange rate, everyday you say “Tomorrow,” you are missing out.  Confident women make confident decisions, and they make them fast. Carol began communicating to women that opportunities do not wait for you. People listened as she challenged the fear of failure as an excuse holding women back. She began empowering women to say yes to the moment, take a chance now, and stop waiting to be ready. Listen in as Carol addresses procrastination in all of its forms and exposes what holds you back from saying yes to your moment.

All profitable things first, all personal things last.  ~ Carol Sankar

Organizing profitable time before personal time

During this conversation, Carol explains how she lives in her own confidence factor and steps up to opportunities.  Her daily structure stems from all profitable things first, all personal things last. Carol’s morning “Wheaties” are purposeful things and profitable circles. She starts her day early and intentionally. It is not that Carol’s life is distraction-free, she just uses her time wisely and practices discipline. Listen to Carol’s analysis of a typical day to see where your time, and therefore your currency, are going.  She says that at the end of the day, “An unstructured entrepreneur is a broke one.” When the dream is to quit your job and run your business full time, people are tempted to cast out all structure.  But structuring and scheduling your freedom keeps your business profitable.  Carol offers tips on blocking out time for clients, and for yourself, to stay in control of your schedule.  Be sure to listen!

Embracing growth and going big

The thing that makes Carol a Happy Black Woman is growth.  She has seen it in herself and in her clients, and celebrates that the Confidence Factor is changing the business world for women. She knows you have to think big, but then you have to go big.  As you take each step, stretch yourself, your mind, and abilities, you’ll start to get a glimpse of what you are capable of. Carol offers advice to quit your job and embrace the process of transitioning into your dream business. She runs her business and her life at a high level, and surrounds herself with people who have already been there.  If you want to quit your job, it’s time you learn how to start that transition and create the mental space to focus on your business.  If you don’t have a leader or a plan to follow, you will never build your business. Listen to this episode to jumpstart your journey of becoming a confident woman, making confident decisions.

Stop waiting to be ready, and say yes to the moment, on this episode.

HBW 023: Jennifer LaFrance on How to Get Off the Sidelines and Into the Game of Life

February 7, 2016 | By Rosetta |

happy black woman podcast_feat _JENNIFER LAFRANCE_CAPITAL Letters_72 DPI

Today’s guest is Jennifer LaFrance, a Happy Black Woman based out of New Orleans. Jennifer is a life coach and entrepreneur with the mission to encourage, inspire and educate women. Jennifer developed her mission while she journeyed into her best life, and now coaches others on their journeys. The “encourage” aspect of the mission is about offering support to women as they realize their value.  Jennifer “inspires” by being an example herself, and connecting women to others who have traveled similar paths.  The “education” piece teaches women how to tap into their inner strength and increase clarity and focus so they can live their best life.  Sound like a mission you could get onboard with? This conversation paints a picture of how a life coach works with clients to understand the blocks preventing them from seeing their potential. Jennifer uncovers the mental tapes women play over and over in their heads of things they cannot do.  She tackles these thoughts one chunk at a time in line with your goals. Listen in on lessons to change your way of thinking and start creating your ideal life.

Take the 3 Day Declutter Challenge: Physical clutter prevents creativity! @lafrance87

Moving from the sidelines of life, into the game.

Jennifer knows that she is the reason she started her business.  She found herself sitting on the sidelines of life, disillusioned and uninvolved in her own life. She had a job, but no fulfillment. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused her even more disillusionment.  Jennifer lost all of her material possessions.  She lived through the devastation of her whole world. Jennifer turned inward to thoughts of “Now what?” and “What is the purpose for my life?”  She could not fully embrace herself, because she was so distant from who she truly was.  Jennifer wrestled with these questions until 2011, when her company reorganized and eliminated her position. It was a force she could not control, but turned out to be the perfect time to embrace discovering what she wanted to do with her life.  Jennifer’s business was born out of wanting to help others embrace their life and get off the sidelines-before life forced them to. Have you ever found yourself watching from the sidelines when you should be in the game, doing the things you love? Be sure to tune into this episode of Happy Black Woman

Drop the excuses and start daydreaming.

Do you need to rediscover yourself and get back in the game?  Jennifer says the key is simple: allow yourself to daydream.  Remove the excuses, the details, the logistics and think about what you would if you could achieve whatever it is you are passionate about regardless of things like time and money. As risky and silly as it felt, Jennifer made a list of her dreams.  She was only working part-time, feeling like financial security was more relevant that daydreaming.  Today, Jennifer is able to offer examples of dreams realized that started out on that scribbled list. She worked day by day and sought help from outside her own brain. As someone who has tasted success, she recommends finding a life coach, or at least a friend who understands and supports you. An outside source can help you think through the barriers in your brain and help your dreams manifest.  Having accountability helps Jennifer get unstuck and off the sidelines. Are you ready to make a list and put action to your dreams?

Embracing your failures is the foundation to moving forward.

Jennifer’s business was born out of her own journey, but how does she stay the course?  She keeps her day fluid, because she took the time to get to know herself, her best self.  She found out that she’s critical and hard on herself when operating on a tight schedule.  She needs to be able to enjoy the process of becoming an entrepreneur.  She used to work straight through the day, but now makes sure to inject creative thoughts into her day. Jennifer is full of inspirational messages, both to keep herself going and to encourage her clients.  She reads, blogs, and writes to stay in line with her mission of encouraging, inspiring, and educating. Her mission dictates her day and her life. But it isn’t all pretty.  If you want to achieve, you must take a risk.  You have to step outside your comfort zone, face your fears and embrace your failures. This episode will have you scribbling notes on how to use your failures as your best teachers. Jennifer looks back on years of asking why she was doing what she was doing instead of actually taking a risk and doing it.

Check your gut and start SOMETHING today.

In her journey of becoming an entrepreneur, Jennifer saw in herself and in her clients that we all look back.  She advises to start today, because ”A year from now, you will wish you had started today.”  So many of her clients and people in general say, “Oh, I’ll get to it.” A year later they have not done a thing.  Jennifer’s “start” was the list of dreams she made.  Sure, she was starting from the comfort of her own home, with relatively low risk, but putting pen to paper was the baby step that led to the realization of her dreams. Daydream. Figure out what makes your eyes light up. Rediscover what it is that makes you come alive and build from there.  Jennifer found out that she thrives through connections. Her passion for connections led her to life coaching, connecting people with themselves again. She invites you to get back in touch with yourself and trust your gut, not just your logic.  Are you ready to find out where your passions will lead you? Like Jennifer, they could lead you to being a Happy Black Woman.

About Jennifer LaFrance

Jennifer is a life coach that assists women who feel stagnant and trapped to change their way of thinking and live with more clarity in their lives.  Her passion for this work is the result of changing her own life from career banker and working toward her purpose.

Hurricane Katrina was the catalyst to Jennifer reevaluating her life choices and realizing that she wanted a deeper connection to her work and not just showing up for a job.

Following the spiritual GPS that has been a constant in her life, Jennifer saw the job layoff in 2012 as her opportunity to become an entrepreneur and utilize her experiences and training skills to help others. Her strength, according to her clients, is guiding them to the answers they have within, but are hesitant to acknowledge due to social beliefs.

Jennifer is a Martha Beck-trained life coach with a M.S. in psychology. She currently resides in New Orleans.

The best business is born out of your own journey and transformation.

What did Adriene’s life look life prior to this transformation? She was 30 pounds heavier, out of shape, and ridden with the feeling that she was not her best self. Adriene was already familiar with the fitness industry.  Even as a personal trainer and fitness group instructor, life got in the way. Adriene’s health was pushed to the back burner. She gained weight, which led to depression, and sent her spiraling on a weight loss program roller coaster. Even though she knew how to eat and exercise, she wasn’t. So, Adriene got a coach, which turned into her passion and purpose. Finding a coach and structured program worked for Adriene so well, that she turned it into a business. She’s here today to help you realize that where you are now is not where you have to stay. This episode might be the inspiration you need to finally make those changes for yourself.

Setting a goal sets you up for success.

Adriene’s journey to success was not based on magic or luck.  She set goals and took action steps that can work for any woman who is just willing to start.  Adriene’s transformation came from figuring out where she was and where she wanted to be.  She got specific, personal, and set up goals instead of haphazardly jumping on bandwagons. Adriene knows all too well that obstacles arise, but having those goals can keep you on track. Experience has taught her that if you keep the end in mind, you have done half the work already. Adriene doesn’t leave listeners alone to dream up goals. Instead, she offers a goal setting workbook with mindset exercises and tracking tools to help you stay the course. This podcast includes a free gift from Adriene to start your goal setting! Join Adriene as she shares how she visualized her own summit and marked out a path to reach the top.

Pick a goal.  Get personal and specific.  And start with the end in mind.  – Adriene Webster

Having accountability changes everything.

You might be one of the women thinking, “I know, but I can do this on my own.” Adriene was a personal trainer when she realized she was not where she could be.  She addresses the deeper, emotional aspects of eating and weight loss. As a coach, she objectively helps women sift through those aspects and offers support along the way. Her perspective changed when she knew someone was checking in on her. The accountability left her with no excuses. Name a weight loss program and she’s tried it.  Have you tried different approaches and methods?  And failed?  If you’ve tried a whole gamut, why not try another way? Adriene’s transformation was not just losing the extra 30 pounds she was lugging around, it was adopting a lifestyle. These days, Adriene maintains habits to keep her fit and on track.  Her days include planned time for cardio and weight training, food prep and planning. Listen in as Rosetta gets nosy about Adriene’s schedule.  If she can do it, you can, too.  Be sure to listen to this conversation to implement your own transformation.

Walk the talk to keep your business authentic.

If you’re looking for a coach that walks the talk, look no further.  Adriene has learned to keep her fitness, nutrition, sleep and stress in balance, all while working full time, being a wife, having a family, and running a business. Do you need to schedule your exercise time?  Or start packing healthy lunches? Or simply invest in a desktop calendar? If you want to start a business based on what you love, you’ve got to be willing to go on your own journey first. Adriene’s credibility developed from her honest struggle, her imperfect attempts at weight loss, and reaching out for help. Listen to Adriene’s best advice to organize your life and empower you to walk away from excuses and toward purpose and passion. The way Adriene attracts clients is to walk her talk. It does not mean you will journey perfectly or sail smoothly to your goals. Listen in for the motivation you might need to go for it, and inspire others along the way. This is just one gem in the goldmine of Happy Black Woman podcasts available this month!

The road to success started out bumpy, but Zenovia persevered.

Zenovia Andrews came from humble beginnings. She experienced abandonment and loss, giving her the motivation to pursue the best life. Though she was deeply loved as a child, she had to go without many things others take for granted. Through this, she found the determination to strive for more, work hard, and achieve her dreams. After spending 12 years working for major pharmaceutical company Pfizer, Zenovia realized she was settling for mediocrity and that there were bigger things in store for her. And so, The Max Out Group was born. Zenovia has built hugely successful businesses through many years of hard work and sacrifice. She shares with us why it’s so important to understand sacrifice as you work towards creating your best life.

Action steps to help you pave the way for success.

The importance of changing your mindset in practicing self-care.

As Gail shares her journey with us, she explains the important first steps of beginning a self-care routine. All too often, we fail to make ourselves a priority in our busy lives. Gail shares why this must be a priority for everyone and how it can help to heal your life. Changing your mindset is the most important part of self-care and Gail shares how this shift impacted her own journey. After finding her mission, Gail has been able to help other women heal and maintain self-care in their lives.

How anyone can begin the healing process.

As Gail discusses her journey with Rosetta, she shares insight into some valuable first steps of healing. The simplicity of taking time for “self” is perhaps the most important aspect of self-care, according to Gail. Gail delves into her daily routine to help other women understand how valuable it is to make yourself a priority and how this can encourage healing. When Gail faced some major health crises, she realized that she had overlooked self-care in her life for many years. Because of this, she is passionately sharing these valuable lessons with women everywhere in an effort to help them begin the healing process.

“If it doesn’t nourish your soul, get rid of it.” – @Simplygail05

When making self-care a priority, it’s essential that a routine is created to ensure these steps are taken each day. Gail generously walks us through her daily routine, along with some transformative products that enhance her self-care regimen. From 100% coconut oil to green smoothies, her routine includes simple, actionable things anyone can add to their day. Keeping it simple, says Gail, is the key to her routine.

Tuning out the naysayers and following your heart.

Throughout Gail’s journey, she gained a better understanding of herself, her needs, and what her priorities are. She shares with us some inspiring quotes that keep her motivated, the value of sleep in a daily routine, and why you need to tune out the naysayers as you begin to follow your dreams. Her story is beyond inspiring and Gail makes it clear that we all deserve to make ourselves a priority. Gail’s story will leave you feeling ready to focus on self-care and healing as you take steps to create your happiest life.

HBW 019: How to Transform Your Money Mindset with Reverend Jenenne Macklin

February 3, 2016 | By Rosetta |

happy black woman podcast_feat _JENENNE MACKLIN_CAPITAL Letters_72 DPI

Today’s conversation with Rosetta brings insight and revelation from Reverend Jenenne Macklin.  She is a licensed clinical therapist with a master’s degree in social work, now working as the Spirit and Riches coach. During her time in the field, Reverend Jenenne helped countless people change their lives, but found a serious lack of self value in women. The Reverend had every reason to not value herself, either.  She journeyed through debt, being fired, and desperately attempting to regain control of her life. Jenenne speaks with authority because she worked her way up from the bottom. She began her life’s work of instilling in women that who you are brings the value to every role you are in. Listen in as Jenenne propels you into making peace with your money by changing your mindset.

How to Transform Your Money Mindset with @JenenneM

Click To Tweet

How you think about yourself impacts how you handle your money.

Reverend Jenenne’s mission is, “To empower women to know their value, to impact and transform their relationship with money.” She started out with a mixed up relationship with money.  Jenenne, not understanding the implications, started accruing credit card debt early on in college. Much to her surprise, the debt and irresponsible choices stayed with her and her credit score. She spent time evading creditors and wondering how to regain control over her finances and her life. Jenenne began to see patterns of thinking and believing but could not seem to change herself or her clients. Untangling self worth from what you do to who you are connected Jenenne’s spirituality to her business of coaching.  Can you relate? Listen in and let Jenenne’s journey motivate you!

Moving from fear to faith.

Do you think you’re the only entrepreneur with debt?  Or the only one with habits of spending money on shoes? Do you think no one else is struggling with historical residue or an ingrained idea of how things are “supposed” to be? Jenenne recommends similar action steps that she took to reboot her thinking. Hear how she involved her spirituality in pursuing business ownership.  She moved herself away from a victim mentality to confidently controlling her money. Jenenne offers proven prosperity principles to help you make peace with money. She picked up the phone and called her creditors instead of running from them. Even though it was scary, she made a budget. She asked herself, and will ask you, “Do I want a different kind of life? Or these shoes?” Learn how Reverend Jenenne put this plan into action on this episode.

Strategies to stay in alignment with your values and move forward.

Whether you are a first generation entrepreneur or not, you will be met with resistance as you move forward.  Reverend Jenenne rediscovered her value, but not without obstacles to overcome. She examined what voices she was surrounded by and if she needed to leave some circles of people behind.  Are you in a conversation of support? Do you only hear discouragement? Jenenne knows first-hand that you cannot survive this journey alone.  She advises simple but powerful strategies to keep you in line with the changes you’ll need to make.  On this episode, Reverend Jenenne walks us through the strategies she implements daily, from waking in the morning until she falls asleep at night. She offers a fancy way of saying, “No” when discouraging voices leak in. Listen in for ways you can implement lasting habits to daily set yourself up for success.

Bringing the missing pieces to your business.

How did Jenenne find that missing piece and connect her spirituality to her business?  Rosetta ends this conversation with Jenenne’s best advice and an anthem to know yourself and your value. The shift to understanding her own value changed Jenenne’s path. She is ready for you to change your path, too.  She shares resources, authors, books, websites and endless help for your journey. Jenenne divulges what inspires her and how she stands her ground in continued prosperity. You’ll find wisdom and inspiration from Reverend Jenenne’s journey on this episode of Happy Black Woman.

HBW 018: How Patrice Grell Yursik Took Afrobella From a Part-Time Passion to a Full-Time Business

February 2, 2016 | By Rosetta |

happy black woman podcast_feat _PATRICE GRELL YURSIK_CAPITAL Letters_72 DPI

On today’s show Rosetta chats with Patrice Grell Yursik, founder of Afrobella. She’s a passionate entrepreneur and part of the Happy Black Woman tribe. With a flourishing business celebrating its 10th year, Patrice is the perfect person to share tips and inspiration to help you follow your passion and purpose. With a background in creative writing, Patrice spent many years working for large newspapers. While she enjoyed her work, she came face to face with a noticeable void in the media – one shaped like her. Patrice sought positivity in the media and so she decided to pursue her passion and create Afrobella. She’s been featured in Essence, Ebony, Glamour, and many other major media outlets. In her chat with Rosetta, Patrice offers great insight into how she turned her passion into a full time job.

How Patrice Grell Yursik Took @Afrobella From a Part-Time Passion to a Full-Time Business

Click To Tweet

The evolution of Afrobella from part-time passion pursuit to full-time career.

Patrice was working full-time in a career she enjoyed. But when she noticed what was truly lacking in the media, Patrice was inspired to take action. With the urging of a close friend, she came up with her brand and (thanks in part to her husband) the name “Afrobella” was born. Patrice’s mission: to empower women to love themselves, live their best lives, and embrace their beauty on their own terms. From its whimsical beginnings, Afrobella has truly evolved into a flourishing business and to go-to source for beauty tips. Called by many as the “Godmother of Brown Beauty Blogging” Patrice has become a public figure and has received accolades for her work including being included in the list of Ebony Magazine’s Power 100. Since its launch 10 years ago, Afrobella.com has seen over 11 million page views.

Finding your niche and letting it shine.

Although Patrice didn’t start out as a beauty expert, her platform and brand have certainly established her as one. She shares how you too can find your niche and let your skills shine. It’s all about believing in yourself and going after your passion with everything you’ve got. Patrice explains how the quote, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” has played a key role in her journey. After starting Afrobella in 2006, Patrice was able to quit her job just 3 years later. As she shares her inspiring journey, she points out that if she can do it, you can too.

A perpetual act of rising to the occasion.

As Patrice takes us through the process of launching her website and eventually becoming a public figure, she shares insight into the steps you can take to turn your passion into a career. Patrice delves into the process of establishing yourself as an expert in your field and how that can translate into much success – in any niche. As she strives to balance a busy business and family life, Patrice uses productivity tools to keep herself focused and makes sure to start her day centered and grounded.

Embrace a spirit of community instead of a spirit of competition.

In her journey as Afrobella, Patrice Grell Yursik certainly faced obstacles, fear, and uncertainty. In spite of – and sometimes because of – those things, she found success in a career that fulfills her and brings her happiness. As Rosetta closes her conversation with Patrice, they discuss the importance of maintaining balance, finding inspiration around you, and following your passion – even when it scares you. Patrice’s story is the stuff happy black women are made of. She’s found her way to happiness – and you can too. You’ll find inspiration and empowerment on this episode of Happy Black Woman.
