HBW073: Kara Stevens, A New Conversation About Black Women And Money

January 11, 2017 | By Rosetta |

Black women and money are not often spoken of in the same sentence. There are so many negative mindsets or pieces of emotional baggage that we black women carry surrounding money that have to be changed. Thankfully, we have some sisters who have been down that road ahead of us and are willing to help. Kara Stevens is one of those women. She’s done the hard work of changing her own mindset to facilitate a different way of dealing with and earning money. In this conversation, Rosetta and Kara talk about the baggage and mindsets that hold Black Women back and chart a way forward. You’ll want to hear this one.

The emotional hurdles surrounding money have got to be overcome.

Too many times we black women are living our lives according to beliefs and emotional baggage that no longer apply. Kara Stevens shares how as a child her dominant belief about men and money was that men cannot be trusted with money. She had to do a lot of self-examination and personal work to overcome the negative beliefs she had around money and realized on her path to healing that she was learning things that many of her sisters needed to know. It wasn’t long before she was beginning to speak about what she was learning and in time it created a business that empowers black women to think and live differently in relationship to money. You can find out how Kara has walked that path and has come to such a healthy place, on this episode.

It’s a form of self-love to ask for a reasonable payment for your services.

One of the things Kara had to realize as she began examining her beliefs and practices surrounding money was that she was scared to ask for a significant payment for the services she was providing people. But a revelation that changed her entire approach to the topic was that it is actually a form of self-love to ask for reasonable payment for your services. It’s not greedy. It’s not unkind. It’s right for you and right for those you are serving. And ultimately it enables you to provide for yourself and your family as you should. Kara shares many insights like this during this conversation with Rosetta so take the time to listen.

Saving money is great. But you need to switch to thinking about earning more money.

Every financial planner or coach advises that you set up a way to consistently save money. That’s great. Kara Stevens, Rosetta’s guest on this episode does as well. But she also points out that at some point you need to get past the fundamental principle of saving money and begin to move toward the possibility of making more money. There are two ways to approach meeting your needs, and making more money is surely the more fun and liberating way of the two. Kara gives some great advice about how you can get your mind around the idea and what you can do to begin moving in that direction, on this episode.

If you can’t find the money to invest in yourself, nobody else will.

It’s hard to think about spending money for self-improvement options such as coaching or training when you don’t have much money to spend. But you will eventually come to the point where you realize that nobody else is going to spend the time, make the effort, or invest the money in your growth. You have to do it. So you need to find a way to maximize your ability to save and make money so that you can equip yourself with the mindset and skills it will take to get your life moving in a different direction. You can learn a lot about this sort of personal development mindset switch on this episode of Happy Black Woman.

If you can’t find the money to invest in yourself, nobody else will @frugalfeminista

Throughout life, each of us has a myriad of things that come to be part of our life, things that we get used to and tolerate that should never have been allowed into our lives in the first place. It’s those things that are the hardest to get rid of because they feel so natural, so normal and right. But if there are things in your life that are not serving you in a way that will bring about the life you want and need, then you need to get rid of those things. On this episode, Abiola Abrams talks with Rosetta about the difficulty of letting go and how the first steps are sometimes the hardest.

Get specific about the things you want to be and do in the world.

You may have heard the old saying, “If you aim at nothing, you’re sure to hit it.” It’s a pithy way of saying that every one of us needs to have goals that we are striving for. Without them, we flounder in a sea of doubt and insecurity. But on this episode, Abiola Abrams says that it’s not just important to have goals, it’s important that they are specific and clear. Find out how to make the clear choice for yourself and your future, on this episode.

What’s Your Theme Word for 2017?

January 2, 2017 | By Rosetta |

“Release and detach from every person, every circumstance, every condition, and every situation that no longer serves a divine purpose in your life. All things have a season, and all seasons must come to an end. Choose a new season, filled with purposeful thoughts and activities.” – Iyanla Vanzant

On New Year’s Eve, I got up early and went to a coffee shop near my house to cozy up with a chai tea latte and set my intentions for what I want to create in 2017.

This is an essential part of my year-end ritual using my 2016-2017 Annual Review/Preview Reflection Guide. If you haven’t completed your own review/preview yet, I highly encourage you to do so. Reflection is one of the most powerful tools for personal development!

Click here to download the free review/preview guide

As part of my reflection process, I also chose a theme word that best describes what I want to experience in 2017.

My theme word for the coming year is:

Liberation.

It’s 2017.

This is what I am choosing:

I choose to release everything that no longer serves me or my purpose here on earth.

I choose to eliminate all negative and limited beliefs.

I choose to let go of the past and step into my future.

I choose to forgive and move forward.

I choose to believe that all my relationships are growing and expanding.

I choose to believe that I am always loved and supported.

I choose to believe that anything and everything is possible for me.

I choose to create the life of my dreams.

I choose to help others and leave a legacy for black women all over the world.

I choose to take good care of myself so that I can care for others.

I choose to be authentic.

I choose to become more of who I really am.

I choose to be set free.

What about you? What are you choosing – starting now?

What’s your theme word for 2017?

It’s Time to Let Go of the Old Version of You

December 30, 2016 | By Rosetta |

“We must be willing to get rid of the life we’ve planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us.” – Joseph Campbell

This week, I’ve been immersed in my end-of-year “cocoon.”

Every year, I spend quality time with myself to go within for deep reflection, writing and planning.

My birthday is on New Year’s Eve, so it’s perfect timing for me to press the reset button on my life! This year, I will be turning 34 :)

We have just 2 days left of 2016 and today, I’m wrapping up my plan for 2017.

My plan includes all the things I want to START doing, but also all the things I want to STOP doing so that I can manifest the big vision I have for my life.

Ultimately, it’s about the woman I want to BECOME in 2017.

And to do that, I need to leave the woman I have BEEN behind.

I need to leave the woman I am NOW behind.

You have to be willing to LET GO of the beliefs and behaviors that are holding you back from being happy, successful and free.

What do you want to let go of in 2017?

This could be the year for you to release…

Self-sabotage.

Procrastination.

Perfectionism.

Making excuses for why you “can’t” do what you want.

Self-criticism.

Identifying yourself as “poor” or “broke.”

Comparing yourself to others.

And so on.

The good news is that over the next 2 days, you can begin this process now with our popular personal development program, 31 Days to Reset Your Life.

31 Days to Reset Your Life will show you how to press the “reset” button and start living the life you really want in 2017. It’s is a month-long, interactive transformation experience that leverages the power of daily reflection and inspired action.

Each day, you will be given a specific exercise that will help you:

  • get out of an unsatisfying rut
  • rediscover who you truly are
  • develop a personal mission statement
  • create a map for your ideal life
  • envision and pursue your passion and purpose

But it doesn’t take much to get your PR strategy clear, concise, and targeted to your ideal customer or client, you just have to know HOW to do the work, and take the time to do it. On this episode of Happy Black Woman, Rosetta is chatting with Ayofemi Kirby, an expert PR strategist who is part of the Happy Black Woman inner circle mastermind group. What is PR and why is it important for every business?

PR (public relations) is an older term carried over from the days of big business, but it’s a term that’s still relevant when you understand how it has changed with the times. The very words “public relations” express the need for you, the person behind your business, to relate to the public in ways that bring the connection that builds trust and leads to business interactions. True public relations strategy builds relationships in ways that foster ongoing client and customer satisfaction and loyalty. It’s about being genuine in a personal way. On this episode, Femi Kirby shares the basics of what goes into a powerful PR strategy so you can begin honing your message to appeal to your ideal clients.

This is where a powerful PR Strategy begins.

Power PR Strategy is not so much about using formulas or certain phrases. It’s about authenticity and true concern for the people you serve. As you target your message to the exact people who need what you provide and do so with an authentic story that tells why you are so passionate and skilled at doing it, you’ll find your ideal clients drawn to you and your message. Find out how to make the adjustments to your message that bring big results from Rosetta’s guest on this episode, Ayofemi Kirby, the PR expert.

This is where a powerful PR Strategy begins @Ayofemi

Why you’ve got to take the time to craft your own PR story.

The story behind your brand is a big piece of effective PR (public relations). The potential clients who hear your brand message want to know that you have experienced some of the same things they are experiencing. It’s your story, the recounting of your own struggle and journey, that enables them to Your story builds a level of credibility nothing else can. On this episode of Happy Black Woman, Rosetta asks her guest, PR expert Femi Kirby to unpack how to craft an effective PR story, so be sure you take the time to learn from this wise and skilled woman entrepreneur.

Simplify the overwhelm and intimidation of starting: Focus on getting one client.

As you consider starting a business of your own, you’re likely overwhelmed and maybe even a bit intimidated by everything that goes into getting started. That’s understandable because there are many moving pieces. When Rosetta asked her guest, Ayofemi Kirby, what she advises women who are just starting out, she had some powerful advice to give: Get rid of all the possibilities of what you could do and just focus on getting one client. That one mindset shift can help you get focused on the most important things and will automatically filter out many of the options you don’t need to be concerned with at first. Hear more great advice like that from Femi on this episode.

4 Ways to Choose Happiness When the Holidays Are Difficult

December 25, 2016 | By Rosetta |

Happy holidays!

This time of year, there are so many occasions for joy and celebration – Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and of course, the upcoming New Year.

But, it’s not always a happy time of year for so many women in our tribe.

Yes, I AM the Happy Black Woman…but for me, happiness begins with truth.

And the truth is…

Family can be such a blessing, but it can also be a burden this time of year.

For those of us who have lost loved ones, are divorced, separated or widowed, dealing with a breakup or have difficult relationships with our family members, this can be a very emotional period.

I’m experiencing this right now in my own life as this is the second year in a row that I have not spent the holidays with my mother. My mom and I have always had a complicated relationship, but we made it work over the years.

But what I have learned is that you should not and do not have to sacrifice your own well-being just to keep the peace with certain people in your family.

Here’s what I’ve been doing to deliberately choose happiness during the holidays. You may find these tools useful in your own journey right now or pass them on to a friend who is struggling to get through this time of year.

1. Create new memories and traditions.

During the holidays, memories of years past can be quite painful. It may help to come up with fresh new memories that can evoke feelings of happiness instead of sadness or regret. This year, my sister and her hubby flew in to visit me and my boyfriend here at our new home in San Diego. We have been creating our own little traditions and rituals for the holidays, from high tea to a joint Christmas Eve/Hanukkah celebration (my sister’s hubby is Jewish), to Christmas dinner, gift exchange and movie night by the fireplace.

2. Spend time alone and go within.

You may feel lonely this time of year, however being alone doesn’t have to be a bad thing. You can choose to see time alone as a positive instead of a negative because it gives you the space to slow down and rediscover who you are. In this moment, you can find peace and contentment by spending quality time with yourself. Use this time to journal, read, pray, meditate and just be with YOU.

3. Take really good care of yourself.

You don’t have to have a special person or loving family members in your life to be happy during the holidays. This is the time for you to give yourself everything you want. Spoil yourself with good food, the best wine, long bubble baths and cozy nights curled up with your favorite movies. I recommend comedies for this time of year. Laughter is the best medicine!

4. Reflect and set new goals you can be excited about.

The end of the year can be a time to have a pity party about what was or could have been. OR this can be your moment to start over and set new intentions for what you want to do and experience in 2017. HBW070: Dafina Lovelace – Yoga and Meditation For Greater Peace And Success

December 25, 2016 | By Rosetta |

Rosetta admits that for many years she thought of yoga and meditation as things that weren’t for her. In her mind, they were things skinny white women did. But through relationships with people like her guest on this episode, Dafina Lovelace, she’s discovered that the practice of yoga and the principles that serve as its foundation is a powerful way she can calm herself, relieve stress, and center herself around her purpose. All of that enables her to accomplish more and move her success to even higher levels. On this episode, Rosetta and Dafina chat about how a happy black woman with an MBA and a tech background became a certified yoga instructor and leveraged that skill into a business for accomplished and aspiring black woman entrepreneurs.

Why every black woman should try Yoga and meditation.

As Rosetta and Dafina chatted about the stigma that yoga often has they both agreed that every black woman should at least do their homework when it comes to understanding the principles and practice of yoga. Both of them have found it to be a soothing, life-changing practice that has created space for thought, better ideas, and mental energy that enables greater creativity and drive. You can hear their conversation and take some first steps toward unlocking the power yoga could have in your life, by listening to this episode.

Are you like so many people who have a fear of being still – of truly thinking?

One of the things about yoga that seems hokey or strange to people is the meditation aspect of the practice. It’s an intentional time of placing your body and mind into a state of quiet and concentration. But that sounds weird to many people. They don’t like to be alone with their thoughts, especially while striking strange physical poses! During this conversation Rosetta and her guest, Dafina Lovelace talk about the role the physical aspects of yoga plays in enabling deeper concentration and how that time of quiet and peace empowers the rest of life. You can hear it on this episode.

Lessons from hearing how a yoga instructor starts and lives her day.

One of the questions Rosetta asked her guest, Dafina Lovelace during this conversation was about the daily habits and practices that she employs to keep her life on track. It may not sound like an especially interesting question until you realize that Dafina is a professional yoga instructor. As Rosetta expected, there are quite a few gems in what Dafina had to share, including a refusal to keep her cell phone in the room as she sleeps. You can hear more great life hacks and tips from Dafina, so be sure you listen.

The #1 piece of advice for black women entering the business world.

As Rosetta and her guest, Dafina Lovelace wrapped up their conversation, Rosetta asked Dafina for her best piece of advice for fellow black women who are considering a step into the entrepreneurial or business world. Dafina said the main thing she’s learned is that it’s preferable to run outside the pack. You need to trust yourself. You need to see the unique gifts you have and learn that they are meant to be leveraged for the good of others. You don’t have to do things the same way as everyone else. That puts you in a unique place that allows your true self to serve the world. Find out what Dafina means when she says, “Trust yourself,” on this episode.

About Dafina Lovelace

Dafina is more than just a corporate leader and a yoga instructor. As a self-sufficient go-getter, she has kept her eyes on one target…changing the lives of business professionals across the world. She used to be like you—tired, stressed out, and working diligently to excel in her workplace and make a difference in the world. But over time, her big dreams and tenacious nature weren’t enough. Something was missing…While on a walk, Dafina came across a hidden oasis between two large skyscrapers. It was a yoga studio. She’ll never forget what happened next. It was like she met herself for the very first time. During class, Dafina was able to let go and allow her mind and body to come together and make beautiful things happen. All the stress, frustration, and worry that accompany the “rat race” were gone, just like that. To make things even better, Dafina experienced a level of playfulness she had long forgotten. Yoga helped Dafina rediscover her resilience and self-worth, while strengthening her mind and body in ways she never knew existed. And she would like to do the same for you. Do you realize the power of your own story?

Most of us see our story as a path riddled with liabilities, hurts, and disappointments. We find it hard to believe that the things we’ve experienced can be of help to others. And while your path may be fraught with those kinds of experiences it’s nevertheless true that what you’ve experienced equips you to be an asset to others who have not yet overcome those same things in their own lives. This episode of the podcast features Kimberly Dunlap, a woman with her own past and share of pain, but she’s leveraging those experiences to use her story for the benefit of others. If you need inner healing, a newfound confidence in yourself, or a sense of greater purpose then you need to hear Kimberly’s story!

To begin building confidence it’s vital that you learn to quiet the inner noise.

In this conversation on The Happy Black Woman podcast, Rosetta asked her guest, Kimberly Dunlap, what the first step is in moving toward inner healing and the building of personal confidence. Kimberly said that the very first thing every woman needs to do is learn how to quiet the inner noise that distracts and condemns. You know what she’s talking about, don’t you? It’s those nagging voices from the past that tell you that you are no good, not enough, or a failure. Silencing those noises enables you to begin hearing the truth about yourself so that you can start moving past the limitations those negative beliefs have impressed upon you. Find out more about how to find confidence and inner healing, on this episode.

Do you struggle to trust yourself?

Every person on the planet is riddled with a past full of missteps, mistakes, and wrong calls. That kind of track record could cause anyone to begin doubting themselves, to find it hard to trust that they are even capable of making the right call when important decisions arise. If you struggle with those things, you’re not alone. Kimberly Dunlap was plagued with the same kinds of insecurity and doubt until she determined that she was going to overcome. On this episode you’ll hear Kimberly’s story and find out how the insights she’s learned on her own journey to self-confidence can help you learn to trust yourself again and move toward greater things.

How to know if you’re living out a charade that’s not authentic.

You’ve seen people on TV and internet videos who seem to have it all together, but there’s something wrong in the way they come across, something that doesn’t seem real or authentic. None of us want to be that kind of person but we can easily fall into the trap of putting on a facade for others to see. We do it to feel better about ourselves and to hide our insecurities. How do you know if you’re living out that kind of charade? There’s one clear sign. You don’t have joy. Kimberly Dunlap shares how a lack of joy is the main tip-off to an inauthentic life, on this episode of Happy Black Woman with Rosetta Thurman.

Live Your Life Out Loud: Oprah’s Farewell Interview with First Lady Michelle Obama

December 20, 2016 | By Rosetta |

Last night, CBS aired a one-hour exclusive interview called, “First Lady Michelle Obama Says Farewell To The White House: An Oprah Winfrey Special.”

Here’s a short clip from their powerful conversation:

You can click here to watch the entire Oprah Winfrey special online.

Oprah sat down with First Lady Michelle Obama to talk about life at the White House, her eight years as FLOTUS, the legacy she leaves behind, and what’s in store for the future.

As they were talking about the “Angry Black Woman” label people tried to place on FLOTUS, Michelle said something we can all learn from:

She said that amidst the name-calling and criticism, she chose to “live her life out loud” with the intention that her actions would speak for themselves.

Later, Oprah asked FLOTUS what she thought her greatest impact had been.

Oprah said what I think we all have felt seeing Michelle lead with grace and strength over the past 8 years:

“Your just being here, being who you are, being yourself, and allowing the rest of us to see that, make us feel that whatever it is you were…we wanted a little bit of that for ourselves.”

What does this moment mean for us as black women?

It means that we are in a very important time in our evolution.

We have gone from slavery to the White House and everywhere in between.

And now, it’s time to take it to the next level.

It’s time for all of us to LIVE OUR LIVES OUT LOUD.

It’s time for us to stop making excuses for why we CAN’T and start figuring out how we CAN.

It’s time for us to stop playing small and STEP UP to be an inspiring example of success for all the black women and girls who come after us.

Most of all, it’s time for us to stop trying to figure it all out on our own and come together as a tribe.

For support.

For friendship.

For sisterhood.

This is exactly what we’ll be doing at our upcoming Manifest Your Vision 3-Day Mindset Retreat happening January 13-15 in Tampa, Florida.

December 20, 2016 | By Rosetta |

The path to understanding your African heritage is one that each black woman has to take in her own time. On this episode of The Happy Black Woman podcast, Rosetta welcomes June and together the two of them unpack what it means to go in search of your Afrikan heritage, why it matters, and the benefits that come from being more clearly connected to your roots as a black woman. Are you disconnected from your past?

If you don’t know where you’ve come from – where your people have come from – you don’t truly know the context out of which you’ve been raised. There is so much from your past that informs and shapes who you are. June Nzinga White is passionate about helping black people understand their heritage so they can better live out the unique place in the world they have been given. In this conversation, Rosetta asks June a series of questions about her journey into understanding her own past and uncovers how a connection to her Afrikan roots has empowered her and placed her on the mission to help others find their true identity as well.

Your African heritage not only tells where you’ve come from, but who you are.

It may not seem clear to you that your African heritage powerfully informs who you are in the present day, but it’s true. As a black woman, you have unique characteristics that flow out of the cultural, historical, and spiritual traditions that have been passed down to you, whether you knew about them or not. June Nzinga White helps women just like you become better connected to their heritage so they are able to live it out more powerfully and authentically. Rosetta chats with June about that journey, on this episode of The Happy Black Woman podcast.

What happens when you know your own heritage and history? Confidence.

Confidence is one of the most important things we all need in order to fulfill our calling and step into our place in the world. As a black woman, confidence can be lacking for a number of reasons. On this episode, June Nzinga White describes her journey into confidence that began when she first read the writings of Marcus Garvey and began to understand the Afrikan heritage that had shaped her without her knowledge. It’s this knowledge and the time spent understanding her past that led June to a confidence she didn’t know she was missing. Now June helps other black women embrace their true identity and live in their confidence. You can hear more of June’s story on this episode, so be sure you listen.

Do you need a place to connect with other Black Woman?

There is something powerful about coming together with other like-minded, energetic women who are on the same path as you. Rosetta Thurman knows the power of that kind of gathering from personal experience and has created an opportunity for you to find your place and a band of sisters who can support you in the journey as well. The Happy Black Woman Retreat is coming up soon and you can find out more about how to reserve your spot among the eager, dynamic black women who will join Rosetta for this powerful event. About JUNE NZINGA WHITE

June White is on an Afrikan centered journey. She did not begin her life’s journey with an Afrikan-centered mentality. She was taught that education is everything. So she received a BS in Accountancy and a Masters in Taxation from one of the top 20 Universities in the country. After 2.5 years of feeling lost in the accounting industry, she needed a change. She realized she was exhausting her energy in the wrong field and for the wrong purpose. Everyone kept telling her “just be yourself,” but when she tried to do that, she drew a blank. She didn’t know who she was or where she came from. She knew nothing of my history. There was this intense feeling of shame screaming out “how am I supposed to be myself if I don’t know anything about my past?” After that realization, June began searching and came across the following quote from Marcus Garvey: “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” This quote led her to begin doing extensive research about her true history; which led her to the start of an arduous, yet rewarding journey towards an Afrikan-centered Life. One of her newfound duties is to lead people towards Afrikan excellence by giving them knowledge. Another is to lead by example.
