HBW053: Shayla Boyd-Gill on How to be a Family-Oriented Woman and Still Build a Successful Business

July 20, 2016 | By Rosetta |

happy black woman podcast_feat _Shayla Boyd_CAPITAL Letters_72 DPI

Today’s guest, Shayla Boyd-Gill is a wife and mother of 6 home schooled children. It sounds inconceivable at first that any successful business owner could have that many children AND homeschool them as well. But Shayla pulls it off beautifully. She says that her family has actually been the support system that helped her stick with her businesses during the times when she wanted to quit. As her business began to thrive, others began to notice the success she was having and many asked for her help as they pursued their business ideas. She’s grown a deep passion to support family oriented women entrepreneurs find the sweet spot in their businesses. Today’s episode will provide you a great insight into a great woman.

How to be a family oriented woman and still build a successful business, on this episode

Click To Tweet

Your first step is to make the decision to get to the place you want.

There is a natural tendency to approach a new thing with a tentative approach. You don’t fully know what you’re dealing with yet, it’s natural. But Shayla Boyd-Gill says that it doesn’t matter if you’re stepping into a new area, you need to move into it confidently, clear about what you want to accomplish. You’ve got to make the decision to succeed long before you have the opportunity. That’s how you’ll be able to see the opportunities when they arrive. That’s how you’ll be able to step into them and take action when they do. You’ll be inspired by Shayla’s approach to her business, so be sure you listen to this episode.

If you can sell your family, you can sell anyone.

Many women entrepreneurs see their dreams of growing a successful business as being at odds with the rich family life they want to have. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Shayla Boyd-Gill has learned that your family can actually be your biggest source of support and encouragement while building your business, you just need to know how to get them on board with the vision of what you want to accomplish. Her philosophy is that if you can sell your family, you can sell anything. It’s an affirmation that you’re truly dialing in to the right things.

If you can sell it to your family, you can sell it to anyone ~ Shayla Boyd-Gill

Use your calendar to keep you aligned with your goals.

Shayla Boyd-Gill homeschools 6 children, has a rich relationship with her husband, and runs a very successful business. How does she do it all? One of her greatest tools is her calendar. She’s learned to put everything – even her tasks – on her calendar. It helps her easily keep track of what her priorities are for each day and forces her to track her time for greater productivity. She’s able to set aside work when the time comes to be done each day because she’s already committed to working hard during the hours she has. So her evenings are free for her family and her early mornings are free for herself. You can hear more about how Shayla uses her calendar for greater productivity on this episode.

You need to have people around you to keep you on track with your greatest value.

In any business there are hundreds of things to do each day and none of them are trivial. But as the business owner and primary visionary you can’t be the one to do them all. You’ve got to bring a team around you to support your vision and enable you to work on the things that only you can do, the things that move the business forward. Today’s episode gives a peek through the keyhole of Shayla Boyd-Gill’s team structure, showing how a strong team of people can actually open you up to even greater productivity, success, and quality family life.

Independence nearly killed me, so I had to align myself to be supported ~ Shayla Boyd-Gill

VIDEO: Stop Fighting for Your Limitations

July 18, 2016 | By Rosetta |

Screen Shot 2016-07-18 at 4.18.44 AMThe #1 factor that holds black women back from achieving their goals, fulfilling their purpose and becoming happy in life is not what you might think.

It’s not society.

It’s not the economy.

It’s not even our historical background.

It’s OURSELVES.

Why is that?

Because whenever we have a big goal, there is A LOT of resistance that comes up when we’re faced with the possibility of actually getting what we want.

So instead of going ALL IN and deciding to create your dream life, you find yourself making excuse after excuse for why you CAN’T do what you want to do.

This is what I call “fighting for your limitations.”

Are you fighting for your limitations or do you truly believe you can do anything you want with your life?

Find out by watching my recent video livestream below:

Today is the day for you to make a choice.

Either you DECIDE that you truly want to change your circumstances and you’re willing to do the work…

OR

You admit that you’re just PLAYING AROUND and you actually want to keep your excuses so you can stay stuck.

Which one is it?

Because you can’t have both.

P.S. If you’re ready to stop fighting for your limitations and finally get everything you want in life, this is your invitation to join my new “Manifest Your Vision” 5-Day Mindset Challenge!

I ran it live last week and we had over 500 women participating from all over the world. The progress everyone made in just 5 days was incredible!

HBW052: Myleik Teele on How to Stand in Your Power in the Face of Massive Success

July 13, 2016 | By Rosetta |

happy black woman podcast_feat _Myleik Teele_CAPITAL Letters_72 DPI

Myleik Teele is a Black woman who has built a name for herself in a number of areas. Not only has she revolutionized the way women address their curly hair needs as the founder of curlBOX, she’s also worked with brands such as Calvin Klein Cosmetics, The Grammy Awards, American Idol and Nike, as well as music artists Prince, Linkin Park and Travis Barker. Much of that was done through the creation of Art of Facts Public Relations, an agency that grew at a rapid speed and was recognized as one of the top boutique public relations firms in the industry during its short existence. This conversation features Myleik’s journey from service based business to subscription product business and highlights the lessons she’s learned on that journey.

Myleik Teele of CurlBox is Rosetta’s guest on this great episode of Happy Black Woman

Click To Tweet

What is a subscription based product business?

Myleik’s journey led her to create a premier hair sampling box that’s developed a cult following of savvy women. The brand has amassed over 300k Instagram followers and created the popular web series, curlBOX TV, that gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look at their favorite hair care brands. It’s an “out of the box” product business that enables people to receive their desired products like clockwork without hassle through a simple subscription service. On this episode Myleik shares some powerful lessons she’s learned and the adjustments she’s had to make in order to confidently stand in the power it takes to be so successful.

What kind of mindset does it take for a Black woman to be so successful?

When you look at the prospect of being successful, it’s one thing to plan and work for what you want, but there are very particular and powerful mindsets you have to develop in order to rightly handle that success. It may sound crazy but it’s true. Myleik Teele shares with Rosetta how difficult it was for her to be comfortable in the level of success that’s come from her hard work and the adjustments she had to make in the realm of her thinking to make it possible. You’ll gain a lot from this episode if you’ll take the time to listen and apply it to yourself.

What kind of #mindset does it take for a #BlackWoman to be so successful?

Do you have a trusted 3rd party to give you feedback as you succeed?

Success can be lonely. It sounds like an unbelievable thing but it’s true. Myleik Teele discovered that as she’s become more and more successful the people in her life began to assume that everything in her world was OK, and as a result she began to withdraw from her in terms of emotional and personal support. There was no harm meant, it just happened as an outgrowth of how success changed those personal dynamics. Myleik discovered that she needed a trusted 3rd party to help her assess her own emotional and mental health so she could stay on the right track. You can find something to help you on your journey in this episode.

You need good things to do great things as a black woman entrepreneur.

Though a support network is very important to any successful entrepreneur, there are also things you need to pay attention to in terms of self care. Myleik Teele has discovered that some of the good things she needs in her life is good food, rest, good boundaries, and much more. You want to hear what she’s got to share on this episode so that you don’t have to learn these lessons the hard way. Myleik has a very refreshing and honest perspective on this issue and can give you some great insight into yourself and the things you’ll have to navigate on your journey to success.

Because Black Women Matter

July 7, 2016 | By Rosetta |

rp_6714178943_d80769a98a_z.jpg

“When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.” – Audre Lorde

It’s about 7:00pm here in Honolulu, and I’m sitting at my desk in my office.

I actually sat down to write a very different post today.

One about how you can use speaking to fulfill your purpose, make a difference and earn good money at the same time.

While that is an interesting topic for the women in our community, it was difficult for me to write about that when I know that today, most of us in our Happy Black Woman tribe are dealing with a very disturbing reality.

All day, I’ve been glued to my Facebook feed.

Which is weird for me since I typically avoid trending topics on social media because of all the negative news and silly celebrity gossip.

I especially stay away from religion and politics and the circus they have become.

But there was something about watching the videos of multiple black men being killed by police in the United States over the last few days and at the same time also witnessing the grief and anger of my friends and colleagues.

I’ve been reminded that although we’ve come a long way in this country, we still have so far to go.

There are still plenty of white people who fear black people so much that they will do anything to justify our destruction, from attacking our character, our appearance and even our physical bodies.

They fear us because we are a threat to THEIR power.

That’s why the best way for us to rise up is to use OUR power.

As leaders. As teachers. As parents. As healers. As entrepreneurs.

We have creative power. Spiritual power. Economic power.

And no matter how many of us they kill, they can NEVER take that power away.

Several of my friends posted about feeling helpless, not just in the face of police brutality but when it comes to the ongoing blatant racism and white supremacy in the United States in general.

And like them, I’ve been asking myself:

What can I DO?

I can empathize.

I can cry.

I can pray.

I can donate money to the organizations who are on the front lines for change.

But to be honest, none of that seems like enough anymore.

What can I DO?

What I came to that feels authentic for me is to strengthen my commitment to BLACK WOMEN.

People (white people, mostly) often ask me why I named my company and my brand “Happy Black Woman.”

Their concern is that it “excludes people.”

People who are not black women.

Just like there are those who want to turn “Black Lives Matter” into “All Lives Matter” because to actually focus on the importance of black lives makes them feel uncomfortable.

And to be honest, at times I have wondered whether I should be more inclusive.

But the reason I named my brand “Happy Black Woman” is because what I teach is from my personal experience of creating a life of happiness as not just a woman or not even as a Black person, but as a BLACK WOMAN which has its own peculiar set of challenges and complexities.

Reading the comments of black women in our tribe who were expressing concern over their sons, brothers, husbands and fathers made me reflect on all that we go through on this journey to build a meaningful life.

I spent over a decade working in the nonprofit sector for social change and community development.

These days, I leave the on-the-ground organizing to those for whom it is their purpose and calling to do so.

But what I CAN do, and what I am being CALLED to do in this moment is the following:

To strengthen my commitment to supporting black women specifically.

To be unapologetic about who I serve and why.

To not water down my message because it might “offend” people who are not even MY people!

To honor my own need for self-care and to encourage my sisters to do the same.

To show, through my own actions, that as black women, we absolutely deserve to live amazing lives, despite what society would like us to believe.

To remind other black women that there is nothing wrong with us, that we are beautiful and powerful and free to do whatever we want and no one can stop us unless we let them.

To not let anyone stop ME from walking in my purpose, helping others do the same and enjoying the life I have created.

To inspire as many black women as I can while I am alive on this earth.

This is what I can do.

Be more courageous in service to my mission.

What can YOU do?

Love,

Rosetta

Are You Ready to Get What You Want?

July 4, 2016 | By Rosetta |

IMG_0389

I’m back from Bali and definitely enjoying the holiday weekend!

Me and my boyfriend hosted a fun BBQ yesterday for the 4th of July and had about 20 friends over.

I cooked all day in my little Hello Kitty apron – a big pot of collard greens, a pan of baked beans, fried rice, deviled eggs, banana pudding and a pineapple upside-down cake.

My boo fired up the grill with ribs, chicken, shrimp, sausages, burgers – pretty much all the meat you could ever want.

We had good company, awesome food and of course, an epic game of Taboo!

We have a nickname for our home, we call it “The House Filled With Love” because that is our intention for the vibe and the energy of our living space.‬

8 months ago, I had no idea I would be in such a serious relationship, let alone living in Hawaii with the love of my life and hosting parties for our friends.

Yet it’s exactly what I wanted.

When I set my intentions for 2015, one of the most important ones was to manifest romantic love in my life and toward the end of the year, that’s what happened.

People always ask how we met and they’re so surprised when I say Tinder!

What I keep saying is that it’s not about WHERE you meet someone, because as I’ve learned in my travels – love is everywhere.

It’s about whether you are READY to accept and receive love when you do meet that person.

I got off the plane from Bali on Saturday and my driver was waiting for me with a sign bearing my name.

As he drove me home, he asked me about my trip.

I told him that while I was away, I got a lot of inner clarity about the next steps for my business.

And that Bali was beautiful, even with the rain we had there for most of the week.

And that the food was amazing, even though I got sick from the water a few days before I left. (I made the mistake of brushing my teeth with water from the tap!)

And that even though I had a good time, I was so very happy to be HOME.

Love,

Rosetta

P.S. If you’re ready to get what you want, I’ll be leading my brand new “Manifest Your Vision” 5-Day Mindset Challenge starting next Monday, July 11!

This challenge will be the first time I’ve taught this deeply about manifestation outside of my live events.

As part of the challenge, you’ll receive:

  • 5 days of powerful exercises that will empower you to transform your mindset, uplevel your sense of self-worth and strengthen your faith about what’s possible for you
  • 5 days of video training from Rosetta to help you “retrain your brain,” unlearn self-sabotaging behaviors and implement daily manifestation practices to create the life you want
  • a private Facebook group where you can connect with other women who are serious about bringing their dreams to life!

The fun part is that the entire challenge is going to be run inside of a private Facebook group that I created JUST for this challenge!

VIDEO: The Truth About What It Really Takes to Transform Your Life

July 1, 2016 | By Rosetta |

Screen Shot 2016-07-02 at 4.58.26 AMYesterday, I made a video from my hotel on my last day in Bali.

A lot of people who haven’t followed my journey from the beginning wonder how I got to where I am now.

How did I go from working at a 9 to 5 nonprofit job in DC to running a successful training and coaching business that allows me to change lives and travel the world?

The key word for me has been:

INVEST.

I’ve invested quite heavily in myself over the last 8 years since I first launched my business.

In fact, there are 3 key areas I’ve invested in that I believe are absolutely CRITICAL for black women who want to transform their lives.

VIDEO: The Difference Between People Who Get What They Want & Those Who Don’t

June 30, 2016 | By Rosetta |

13501859_1423046334387995_2532959184305840684_n

I’m writing this post from beautiful Bali.

I’m back in Indonesia for a “work-cation” after falling in love with this place during my first trip back in October 2015.

I flew Business Class on Philippine Airlines and had an incredible experience, even though my flight was over 24 hours from Honolulu.

I’m staying in a luxury villa with a private pool.

All for the sake of relaxing, retreating and manifesting a new reality for my life and business.

But the funny thing is, this was actually a last-minute trip for me.

I didn’t plan it out for months.

I didn’t save up money for years.

I just decided to go and here I am!

I was writing in my journal yesterday morning about how grateful I am to be able to live my life this way.

To be able to go wherever I want, whenever I want.

I went from being limited by my own thoughts of what was possible to being LIMITLESS in what I can create for my life.

These days, you will never hear the words “I wish” come out of my mouth.

If I decide I want to do something, I just get to work on brainstorming HOW I can make it happen.

And then I take action.

That’s basically the ONLY difference between people who get what they want and those who don’t.

I recorded a Facebook livestream on this very topic, watch the video below:

VIDEO: Do You Really Want to Be Free? Your Path to Liberation Starts Now

June 25, 2016 | By Rosetta |

Screen Shot 2016-06-25 at 12.34.41 AM

Whenever I talk to the women in our Happy Black Woman Tribe, 3 themes tend to come up over and over again:

Happiness.

Success.

Freedom.

But then…

When I start sharing about what it takes to achieve those states of being – particularly FREEDOM – many women back down from what they say they truly desire.

I did a Facebook Livestream from my courtyard about what it REALLY takes to be free and how you can get started on your path to liberation – from the inside out.

Watch the video below:

In the video, I mentioned the importance of positive affirmations, meditation and surrounding yourself with the right people. Another personal development tool I use every day is journaling about my goals and desires.

Journaling Assignment

  1. Write down one ACTION STEP you can take to begin to LIBERATE yourself of negative thoughts and beliefs.
  2. Write down the DATE by which you will complete or embark on this important action step.

Because if you REALLY want to be free, your path to liberation has to start now.

Freedom vs. Liberation: How to Transform Your Life by Changing Your Mindset

June 24, 2016 | By Rosetta |

26988_508243989615_5215409_n

The 4th of July holiday is coming up here in the United States where we tend to focus on the concept of “freedom.”

Today I absolutely want to talk about freedom, but I also want to go a bit deeper than that.

Deeper than the actual word “freedom” – which can be defined as:

“the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved”

Technically, as black women we are FREE.

Technically, we are no longer physically in slavery.

Technically, we can do whatever we want.

But just because we have freedom does not mean that we have been LIBERATED.

And when I say “liberated” – I mean from our negative, limiting thoughts about ourselves.

Liberation can be defined as:

“the act of setting someone free from imprisonment, slavery, or oppression”

It is essentially being totally free from having any limits on your beliefs, thoughts or behaviors.

As black women, we have freedom but in most cases, we have not done the inner work to liberate ourselves.

So many of are still living out other people’s plans for our lives.

Many of us still care so much about what other people think that we hold ourselves back from doing what makes us happy.

In the beginning, it’s comforting to know that you’re doing all the “right” things in life that women are “supposed” to do.

But after a while, you just start to feel DISAPPOINTED in yourself and what your life has become.

A list of shoulda, woulda, couldas.

Too many “what if’s” and regrets.

As the years go by, you secretly start to wonder:

“Is this it? I this all there is? Is this what life is really about?”

And you dread the answer staring back at you in the mirror.

I know because that’s what happened to me.

Late 2009 began an intense period of deep personal transformation for me.

I refer to that time in my life as my “year of liberation.”

That was the year I quit my PhD program because I realized that the only reason I wanted to be “Dr. Thurman” was so people would listen to me and read my books. I wanted the world to take me seriously, regardless of my age or skin color.

But I quickly discovered (after just one semester) that getting even more letters behind my name was NOT going to give me the validation I needed.

I realized that what I really needed was to validate MYSELF.

What I needed was to start owning my passion, my expertise, my skills and my experience.

What I needed was to learn to be OK with being ME.

2009 was also the year that I decided to go natural.

Then in 2010, I did the “big chop” and went from wearing my hair relaxed and straightened to rocking a teeny weeny afro.

At the same time, I quit my job because deep down, I KNEW that I could go out on my own and become a successful entrepreneur.

I just had to take the leap.

And once I did, here’s what I learned:

That I could do anything I wanted with my life and NO ONE COULD STOP ME.

My “year of liberation” was the year I began doing exactly what I WANTED to do, not what other people thought I SHOULD be doing.

It was the year I stopped waiting for PERMISSION.

And I truly became free.

Which is why lately I’ve been thinking….

Maybe this is YOUR year of liberation.

Perhaps this is the year you STOP seeking other people’s approval and START making the choices you already KNOW are right for you.

If you feel in your heart that NOW is the time for you to make a change in your life and finally DO YOU, the best place to get support would be my 31 Days to Reset Your Life program.

It was designed to help you press the “reset button” on your life and start over so you can rediscover who you really are, get unstuck and live the life you truly want.
