How I Found My Purpose

June 14, 2016 | By Rosetta |

“Become the leader of your life. Lead yourself to where you want to be. Breathe life back into your ambitions, your desires, your goals, your relationships.” ― Steve Maraboli

DCF 1.0

Back in 2008, I took a week-long vacation to Hawaii.

I went by myself.

Why?

Because my best friend from high school backed out at the last minute AND I had just broken up with my boyfriend at the time.

It was October and it was hot, but not summer-hot in Honolulu. I rented a white SUV to drive around the island for the week.

One day, I drove out to the North Shore and spent hours relaxing on the beach.

It was just me, my journal, a picnic basket of food and wine and the occasional surfer dude coming by to ask me if I wanted to smoke.

For some reason, I had been thinking about my father a lot that year. I thought about him that whole week, actually.

It dawned on me that I was 25, the same age my father was when he killed himself.

Why wasn’t I DEAD yet?

I laid out on that beach at the North Shore drinking and wondering how come I WASN’T DEAD YET.

As a teenager, I had started worrying that suicide was hereditary, or at least the conditions that made someone want to die.

As an adult, I understood that this wasn’t exactly the case, but it remained a present worry that showed up in select moments of uncertainty.

It was a pebble rolling around in my mind, threatening to ruin my life if I let it.

On the day of my father’s funeral in November 1989, Mom had me wear one of my “good” dresses with thick tights that shielded my skinny six year-old legs from the cold morning.

But on the North Shore that day in October 2008, the air was warm and my legs were bare.

I was all grown up now, thousands of miles and many years away from that time and place in my life that had caused me so much pain.

I gazed into the blue-green water, the waves rushing up like a question.

I kept thinking to myself:

I COULD BE DEAD BY NOW.

A message from spirit…

A few hours later, I heard a message from God.

Not like a “big booming voice” per se.

It was more like a soft tap on the shoulder.

“You could be dead by now, but you’re still alive. And that means you still have work to do.”

In that moment, I became filled with this absolute sense of knowing.

And I immediately realized the beautiful truth of that statement:

I’M STILL ALIVE!

So I must be here for a reason.

God still has work for me to do.

And then I started doing the work.

I started getting serious about figuring out WHY I was born, WHAT I was put here on earth to do and HOW I could go about doing it.

The answers were always there, but only when I was BRAVE enough to open my eyes and see them.

And if you’re reading this right now, there’s still work for you to do, too.

106A3531There’s still work for YOU to do!

But let me ask you a personal question…

Look around your life right now.

Are you doing the work you were TRULY put here on earth to do?

My name is Rosetta Thurman and if you had met me back in 2007, you would have encountered a relatively successful young woman living in Washington, DC.

I had been placed in a senior management position at a regional nonprofit in the city.

I loved my job, but behind the professional facade, I still felt unsure and confused about what I was REALLY supposed to be doing with my life.

But once I started getting serious about finding my purpose…that’s when my life started to take on a much bigger meaning.

“The key is taking responsibility and initiative, deciding what your life is about and prioritizing your life around the most important things.” – Stephen Covey

Without a doubt, I now KNOW that I was put here on earth for a reason.

I KNOW exactly what I’ve been called to do.

That’s what led me to quit my job in 2010.

I left my comfort zone and the security of a full-time salary to follow my purpose full-time as an author, speaker, mentor and coach.

Today, I get to share my gifts through helping black women create lives of happiness, success and freedom.

And if you’re ready to get unstuck and start living in YOUR true purpose, my upcoming virtual workshop can help:

http://legacy-v1.happyblackwoman.com/find-your-purpose/

I can’t wait to share my powerful self-discovery process with you!

VIDEO: The Importance of Saying Yes to Your Yes

June 13, 2016 | By Rosetta |

Screenshot 2016-06-11 21.27.27

Have you ever made a decision and then backed out of it because you doubted yourself?

If so, my recent livestream will lift you up and encourage you to trust yourself and walk in your purpose, no matter what other people might say.

Watch the video livestream recording below!

When you DON’T say yes to your yes, you can end up moving backwards instead of moving FORWARD.

That’s why when you say YES to something – when you make a powerful decision – you cannot let anybody talk you out of it!

If you are confident in yourself, when you TRUST yourself, that’s when you will do what you know you are meant to do

Remember, the worst case scenario is NOT failure.

It’s regret.

And if you want to begin the process of transforming your mindset so that you can say YES to your yes, I suggest you get started with my popular month-long personal development program, 31 Days to Reset Your Life. Learn more and sign up here: http://31dayreset.com

VIDEO: What Does it Take to Become a Black Woman Millionaire?

June 10, 2016 | By Rosetta |

13423742_1410289388997023_8074412642112349374_n

I had a blast in this past weekend speaking at Dr. Venus Opal Reese’ “Black Women Millionaires LIVE! Luxury Experience for Black Women in Business” at the Ritz-Carlton in Atlanta.

On my way back from the airport, I did a Facebook Livestream highlighting 3 of my major takeaways from the event.

As of this post, I am halfway to my goal of $1M in revenue for 2016! During the BWM event and in this livestream, I had a chance to reflect on what it took to get me from where I was to where I am today.

Watch the video livestream recording below!

What does it take to become a Black Woman Millionaire?

  1. First, you have to declare that you want to be a millionaire in the first place! You can’t reach a goal if you don’t first set the goal. And I’m not talking about saying things like “I wish I could be a millionaire” but actually setting the intention in the present tense because you have faith that it’s going to happen. “I AM a Black Woman Millionaire.” From there, you can get specific with the “how.”
  2. Do the inner work to increase your sense of self-worth. To become a millionaire, you will have to sell lots of products and services in your business, likely for thousands of dollars. And to do that, you must become the kind of woman who KNOWS she is worth that kind of money and more. You will need to focus on transforming your mindset and upleveling your life accordingly.
  3. Surround yourself with people who want to see you win! As you grow your business to the million-dollar mark, there will be people in your life who get jealous of your success and many who just won’t even understand WHY you have such a big goal. That’s when you will have to prioritize meeting like-minded entrepreneurs and find new networks to be a part of where you can be supported. I highly recommend attending live events and joining high-level mastermind groups for this purpose.

If you want to start your journey to transforming your mindset so that you can focus on your purpose, I recommend you get started with my popular month-long personal development program, 31 Days to Reset Your Life. Learn more and sign up here: http://31dayreset.com

EVENT RECAP: What Happens When a Black Woman Stands in Her Power?

June 1, 2016 | By Rosetta |

Just 2 weeks ago, our Happy Black Woman Tribe gathered in person for our 2016 Launch Your Business LIVE 3-Day Boot Camp in Atlanta to explore the question:

What happens when a black woman stands in her power?

When she stops running from her purpose…

When she surrounds herself with like-minded women…

When she invests in her own freedom…

When she stops procrastinating and takes action…

That is when she can truly manifest her vision!

Our theme was “Manifest Your Vision” and we worked on mindset, money and marketing throughout the weekend.

There were close to 150 women who joined us from all over the WORLD – from New York to France to Australia – to learn my proven, step by step strategies for getting their businesses off the ground!

We definitely met our goal to have our biggest and best event EVER.

What I’m most proud of is the sense of sisterhood we created in that room. It was deep, it was palpable and it was real.

During the event, we were also able to raise over $8,500 to support the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta! Here is a picture of all the ladies who gave from the heart in support of the next generation of women in business.

13217344_1390282650997697_8252478906382827131_o

Ain’t no party like a Happy Black Woman party! We had an “I Love the 80s” theme and danced to old school jams from Prince, Michael Jackson, Chaka Khan and more.

We were blessed with wisdom from my 2 amazing speakers – Dr. Venus Opal Reese, the Black Women Millionaire Mentor and Kimberley Borgens, the Solo to CEO Mentor.

Because of the incredible women who make up our Happy Black Woman Team, we were able to plan and execute a transformational experience for our attendees. I couldn’t do this work by myself and I’m so grateful to have a powerful staff that supports the big vision I have for our community. Special thanks to Quanisha, Natalie, Jillian, Melissa, Briana and all of our Happy Black Woman Ambassadors!

If This Was the Last Post I Ever Wrote

April 21, 2016 | By Rosetta |

The_Hits_The_B-SidesIt’s hard to believe that Prince died today.

Besides being one of my favorite musicians, he was also one of my favorite ARTISTS, period.

I’ve loved his music since the 90s. As a little girl, I would watch all-day marathons of his videos on MTV.

I had “Diamonds and Pearls” on repeat back then.

I would sing along at the top of my lungs when the video came on.

Right now, I’m listening to “Adore,” my #1 Prince song of all time.

Whenever someone I know or admire passes away, it causes me to think about my own legacy.

More specifically, it makes me think about how I want to be remembered.

I think about the work that I do and whether I’m helping as many people as I can in the way that I’m meant to.

I think about whether I’m allowing my fear to hold me back from leaving a bigger mark on the world.

I said Prince was one of my favorite ARTISTS overall because there was such an elegant artistry not just in his music, but in the way he made it.

He was talented and eclectic and he shared his unique genius with the world, no matter what people thought of him.

He was proud of his amazing gifts and never apologized for them.

In remembering icons like Prince, we get the opportunity to look around at our own lives and evaluate the legacy we are creating with each action we take (or don’t take).

We absolutely have the power to change the world.

But how many times do we shrink back in fear?

How many times do we almost make it to the finish line but turn back, saying “maybe next time?”

Some of you know that my father passed away when I was just 6 years old so I never got the chance to know him – who he was and who he could have been.

Some of you may also know that that childhood experience is what causes me to live my life a bit differently than the average person.

I have a different perspective about what’s possible.

About what’s “realistic” for my life and the lives of everyone around me.

I have such a deep awareness of my own mortality that at this point in my life, I’m not even afraid of dying.

What I AM afraid of however, is not living fully while I’m still alive.

That’s what allows me to make what can seem like courageous or even “risky” decisions.

Like launching my business without knowing what the hell I was doing.

Quitting my “good job” to become self-employed 2 years later.

Traveling the world solo even when people told me it was “too dangerous.”

Moving in with the love of my life after just a few short months, because I just…knew.

I’ve realized that when you know your purpose, you can live your life outside of the realm of what’s considered “normal.”

The truth is…

Life is unbelievably short.

It passes by so quickly.

And we have no say in when we die.

The only thing we DO have control over is how we live our lives right now, in this moment.

Like so many women in our Happy Black Woman tribe, I’m clear that I don’t want to be on my deathbed wondering “what if?”

Or wishing I had done more of the things I was afraid of.

I feel emotional tonight not just because a musical legend has left us, but because of what he represents.

People all over the world are sharing their tributes to a man they never met.

Prince touched us at a deep level simply by being exactly who he was, unapologetically.

He lived his life so that he would have no regrets when it came time for him to leave this earth.

None of us know when our time will be up, which is the best reason to make the most of the time we have today.

If this was the last post I ever wrote, I would want you to know that you are here for a reason.

I would want you to know that you have a purpose that is bigger than you.

Bigger than your fears.

Bigger than your insecurities.

Bigger than the naysayers living in your head.

I would want you to know that you are loved, unconditionally.

And that every day, you get another chance to start over and be the person you were created to be.

Thank you Prince for being a light.

May you rest in peace.

How to Stay Committed to Your Dreams When Things Get Hard

April 21, 2016 | By Rosetta |

dream

It’s 10:00pm in Hawaii.

Right now, I’m listening to “Little Dreamer” by Lion Babe.

I’m sitting in my big purple reading chair reflecting on the past week, which has been filled with incredible experiences.

From attending my first Submarine Ball with my handsome sailor…

To flying out to San Diego for a 2-day business retreat where I masterminded with successful entrepreneurs and went indoor skydiving for the first time…

To teaching my new virtual workshop – “How to Host Your First Live Event” and getting amazing feedback…

To speaking at a live women’s event here in Honolulu on how to launch a profitable online business…

Life is full and abundant.

And yet…

Things are not “perfect.”

For the past few months, I’ve been working through some family issues with a therapist.

I’ve also been working with a high-level business mentor to help me grow Happy Black Woman to $1M in revenue.

And I recently hired a leadership coach to support me in the area of hiring and managing staff.

While this important inner work has been rewarding, it has often been messy and exhausting.

This is the journey of a dreamer.

Highs.

Lows.

Successes.

Failures.

Mountains.

Valleys.

Sometimes it can feel like a rollercoaster that never ends.

And if you try to walk this walk alone, it can feel like you’re drowning with each step.

If you don’t have a support network, you can fall into a “funk” and watch hope fade away with each negative thought.

So tonight, I just wanted to remind you that no matter what may be going on in your life…

You can still dream.

And those dreams can still come true.

It’s not too late.

Your dreams are just waiting on you to attend to them.

To honor them with love and kindness.

Even when you hit roadblocks.

Even when you run into snags.

Problems are NOT a sign for you to give up.

They are simply reminders for you take care of yourself during the process.

Sleep, little dreamer
Don’t forget to rest your little head

Rest.

Nourish your body.

Protect your energy.

Ask for help when you need it.

Request support and be willing to receive it.

Remember, you are a beautiful dreamer.

Be gentle with your dreams.

Let them inspire and motivate you.

Let them carry you through.

HBW050: Travelling the World and Inspiring Others Along the Way, with Oneika Raymond

April 13, 2016 | By Rosetta |

hbw_ONEIKA RAYMOND3

On today’s show, Rosetta chats with Oneika Raymond. Founder of Oneika the Traveller, Oneika is a world traveller with a passion for making travel more accessible by sharing tips and tricks to help dispel the myths associated with travel. A teacher at heart, Oneika discovered her passion for travel at a young age. Growing up in Canada as a child of Jamaican descent, Oneika was always fascinated with the diversity of her home town of Toronto. In college, Oneika changed her major from economics to French literature in order to study abroad her junior year. The rest – as they say – is history. Once Oneika discovered her love of travelling abroad she made it her mission to travel to as many countries as possible. Throughout this discussion, Oneika shares the inception of her business as well as the realities of travelling on a budget.

My mission is to make #travel more #accessible to people by dispelling myths and fears ~ Oneika…

Finding an audience by sharing your passion.

Once Oneika was bitten by the travel bug, she knew it would be an important part of her life. A self-proclaimed travel addict, Oneika has been travelling and living abroad for 13 years now. In the process of travelling, she decided to start sharing her stories with the world – and so, Oneika the Traveller was born. She immediately found an audience and realized her message was important. Her mission was clear: to make travel more accessible to people – especially to African Americans. Oneika discusses how her love of travel combined with her passion for writing were the perfect combination for her blog. She also offers insight into how she monetizes the opportunity and turned it into a flourishing business.

Tips and tricks to make travel more accessible.

Oneika’s passion for travel is clear. What’s even more evident is her love of sharing it with others. She offers some tips to help you better understand how to make travel possible for yourself – even on a tight budget. Oneika discusses why it’s important to be realistic about your budget and to be willing to make sacrifices in order to have these life-changing travel experiences. She makes it clear that it’s not always about traveling first class, but rather it’s about the experience of being in an amazing place. She drives the point home by sharing tactical blog posts that explain how to travel, where to stay, and even how much you can expect to spend.

Strategies to make #travel more accessible, even on a #budget

Tackling a to-do list and making the most of your day.

Clearly, Oneika stays pretty busy. In addition to maintaining Oneika the Traveller, she has kept her job as a teacher- she currently teaches middle school language arts. The question is, how does she manage to balance it all. Well, Oneika explains how she stays focused by making lots of lists. She also shares how she tackles her to do list by “slaying the dragons first” and how she maintains balance in her very busy life. She also discusses her passion for teaching, along with the fact that she teaches English as a second language while living abroad. Her love of teaching, Oneika says, is at the core of who she is, which is why she maintains teaching jobs wherever she goes.

Finding a way to share your passion – even if you don’t have much time.

As they close out their chat, Oneika and Rosetta discuss the writing process and how Oneika manages to produce so many blog posts. Oneika goes on to offer a tip to people who are ready to share their story, but may not have the time to write 1000 words for a full blog post. Her recommendation? Microblogging. In closing, Oneika shares some of her favorite books, her top travel destinations, and her big tip for women who are ready to follow their dreams. Her tip? Do it. Don’t second guess yourself – just do it. Start now.

About Oneika Raymond:

I’m a gal in her early thirties who has an intense passion for travel, culture, and language. I have been to over 80 countries and am always the verge on planning my next trip. I grew up in Toronto, Canada. I am currently a middle-school teacher at a private school in Hong Kong, though I have taught high school English and French in the past. I am an aspiring polyglot who speaks English and French fluently. I also speak intermediate-level Spanish, and know about three five words of German.

How did I end up teaching half way across the world from where I grew up? The answer is a little long-winded. Basically, it all started in my second year of university, when I found out that French literature majors like me could study abroad in Nantes, France for two semesters once in their third year. Like a pitbull, I stubbornly clung to the idea of going away for a year to France and wouldn’t let go. I put in my application and was accepted.

My year in Nantes was fantastic and was punctuated by trips to Spain, Portugal, England, and Morocco. I had a blast, and upon my return to Canada after a year, I realized that I somehow had to find a way to get back to Europe. I missed France. I soon found a way: an English teaching assistant program that offered 6 to 9-month teaching posts to native English speakers in public schools in mainland France and its overseas departments and territories such as Martinique, La Réunion, and Guadeloupe.

I put in my application once again and was accepted for a 7-month teaching post! Exactly a year after my return to Canada from Nantes, I was once again jetting off to France- this time to Nice. French Riviera, baby! Woohoo!

The next 12 months were spent loving life on the Riviera and getting more stamps in my passport. I started this blog (which used to be called “Oneika does France…Again”) detailing my experiences ( see here and here). I got used to the expat life and began to like teaching. I realized that this teaching and travelling thing was a pretty awesome thing to do, and once I discovered the existence of international schools knew that this was a career path that I’d like to pursue. Upon my return to Canada, I attended teacher’s college and got my Bachelor of Education, which certifies me to teach English Literature and French to students in Grades 7 through to 12.

Then, the job search. I attended a job fair for certified elementary and secondary school teachers who wanted to teach abroad just like I did. After undergoing a number of interviews, I was offered, and accepted, a teaching post in Monterrey, Mexico.

My time in Mexico was mind-blowing and I blogged (after the fact!) about some of the cool things I did and saw over there here. After a year, I headed back to Canada, thinking that it was perhaps time to settle down… But once back I realized that the travel bug was still alive and well. I ditched my French teaching job in Toronto after a year to go teach high school English Lit and French at an international school in Hong Kong. After a two year stint in Asia, I spent another two years in London, UK. However, Asia beckoned once more, and in mid-2013, I moved back to my beloved HK, where I taught for two more years (bringing my time in Asia to a total of four years!) before moving to New York City in June 2015.

Today, Kim discusses how she found her mission and what drives her to dedicate herself to helping others strive and thrive. She offers insight into the path that led her to this mission and how sometimes in life, the greatest gifts can come from the darkest times.
