Review 2012: Ten Journaling Questions to Help You Reflect on the Past Year
This post highlights Part I of a powerful process to help you reflect on 2012 and plan for an amazing 2013.
The new year will be here in a few days, and it’s the perfect time to reflect on 2012 as well as set intentions for what you want to happen in 2013. Perhaps you’d like to join me in a guided reflection process to wrap up the end of the year? Today, I’m sharing ten of the journaling questions I’ll be using for myself that you can use to conduct your own review of 2012.
We Fear Things That Cannot Hurt Us
“Whatever you fear most has no power – it is your fear that has the power.” – Oprah Winfrey
I experience the feeling of fear about a lot of things in my life.
I’m afraid that my business will “fail.” More specifically, I fear that one of these days, no one will want to hire me to do anything anymore.
Event Recap: HBW Fall 2012 Happy Hour in Atlanta
- Last Sunday, I was lucky to get to meet so many amazing ladies who came out to our HBW Happy Hour in Atlanta! We had about 50 women join us throughout the evening – including a few of the ladies who had taken my How to Reset Your Life Workshop earlier that day.
The HBW Happy Hour in Atlanta was the 3rd and final stop on my Fall 2012 Happy Hour Tour and we had a great time taking over the bar at Twelve Hotel Centennial Park downtown. The atmosphere was sophisticated, the food was tasty (I couldn’t get enough of their delicious tempura sushi) and the drinks were on point! This time around, I had a fabulous co-host, Zakiya Kyles (pictured with me above)! Zakiya is a beautiful spirit and a champion for women and girls living their “royal” life. She is the founder of Queenly and Confident, a personal development organization for women and girls.
We also had some awesome sponsors for the evening, who provided us with some cute goodie bags and door prizes: Jet Magazine, CheyCache Designs, Cheryl Gordon – Traci Lynn Fashion Jewelry and Queenly and Confident.

Thanks again to all of our sponsors! If YOUR woman-focused business or company is interested in sponsoring a future HBW event, please email me at rosetta@rosettathurman.com.

Third from left is the one of our sponsors, the lovely Cherie Santiago from CheyCache Designs, who made and donated the very cool branded candy bars seen below :)
I enjoy supporting women who are in the process of launching their own businesses and it was a pleasure to work with Cherie and her new company, CheyCache Designs. She made and donated the branded chocolate bars for the happy hour, which I loved! If you’d like to create a party favor like this for your next event, Cherie offers some great options and pricing.

The Happy Black Woman candy bar! It’s really a Hershey’s chocolate bar with a branded wrapper. Neat, huh?!
Oh, and this was our fun, cutie bartender Christian. He gave us awesome service at the Twelve Hotel bar and did my bourbon and coke up right!
Who showed up in Atlanta? We had a fantastic, warm and inviting group of interesting women including business owners – consultants, coaches, professional speakers, even a woman who bakes vegan desserts! There were also lots of fellow bloggers in attendance, authors and of course, lovely natural sisters rocking their locs and afros. I also got to meet several ladies who were newcomers to the city.
My MOM was in the house again this time, feeling very happy after her 5th-place WIN at the 2012 NPC Bodybuilding Championships that were held that weekend in Atlanta. And yes, she’s rocking a Happy Black Woman t-shirt! You can get yours here >>>
I enjoyed meeting women like Robin Crawford, who is working on a book highlighting the stories of women who made the transition from relaxed to natural hair. I also had the pleasure of connecting with Kim Carswell, owner of Personal Affairs branding firm in Atlanta. Andrea Amir from Smart Money Chicks also made an appearance!

Ladies in blue :) That’s @Tiffany_BlairG on the left! With my mom grubbing in the background LOL
OK, so I know I keep saying this, but it’s the truth…something incredible happens when you bring a group of black women together under a positive theme. We end up having rich, affirming conversations that highlight our interests and values. We focus on how we can support each other instead of trying to compete with each other. That is what I loved about how we came together in Atlanta, even as a few ladies there were telling me about how rare it is to see such a large group of “happy black woman” anywhere in the city.

On the left is author & speaker @DareeAllen and on the right is @QueenlyandConf, matching with their purple ensembles LOL
It was lovely meeting Miss @Lucy_Pearl, who also won the Traci Lynn Jewelry door prize! (pictured below)

THANK YOU to all the ladies who attended our gathering in Atlanta. I hope our paths cross again soon. You can see more photos from the event over on our Happy Black Woman Facebook Community.

P.S. Here are a few of my favorite tweets from the evening.

There Are a Million Ways to Get What You Want
Back in 2009, I thought I needed a PhD to change the world. I wanted to write books and journal articles and conduct research that would totally redefine the way we view leadership. So what did I do? I applied to a PhD program, got in, took out a $10,000 loan and went back to school. I even went part-time at my job so I could use as much time as possible for research and writing papers.
How Much Are You Investing in the Business of You?
Today, I attended a half-day workshop hosted by the Virginia Chapter of the National Speakers Association. The workshop was called “The Story Finder: How to Create New Stories in 10 Minutes or Less!” and was presented by a fantastic speaker named Ed Tate. As a first-time attendee, I only had to pay $47, yet I easily received at least 10 times the value of the workshop fee. Not only did Ed give us concrete tools to create compelling stories for our speeches, but he also dropped some valuable knowledge about the speaking business itself. I took so many notes today, my head is spinning LOL.
You Can’t Make Money if You Keep Giving Everything Away for Free
When I was working in the nonprofit field, my main area of expertise was in fundraising. This means I pretty much spent eight years of my career asking people for money to support charitable causes. Yet ironically, when I decided to take my business full-time in 2010, I had a hard time marketing myself, let alone asking potential clients and customers to pay me for my services and products. Because I started out as a blogger, I was so used to giving everything away for free. This included valuable information and expertise that, I soon learned, many consultants charge top dollar for!
Obviously, if I had kept along the path of giving away all my expertise for free, I wouldn’t have a business right now. The model that has proven successful for me has been to offer SOME information for free – blog posts, workbooks, webinars, teleseminars – and charge money for my more in-depth, robust resources.
Event Recap: HBW Fall 2012 Happy Hour in Charlotte, NC

We were the last stragglers to leave the lobby bar after 10pm…talking about men LOL. (@KristenEJ is pictured far left)
- This post is not just a recap, but a huge THANK YOU to all the lovely ladies who came out to our HBW Happy Hour in Charlotte, NC! We had about 20 women join us throughout the evening – various ages, many different backgrounds, yet all connected through our shared desire to live life on our own terms.
What I Love the Most About My Mom

With my MOM @livinthefitlife after her figure competition in Atlanta! She won 5th place in her class :)
I’m getting settled in Atlanta after spending a few days in Charlotte, NC to speak at a conference. (Stay tuned for a full recap from last night’s HBW Happy Hour in Charlotte!) The main reason I wanted to come down to Atlanta this weekend was to root for my mom at the 2012 NPC Bodybuilding Championships. Mom has been a personal trainer and fitness coach for many years and participated in her first competition back in 1994. Since last year, she’s competed in five figure competitions, including this one. Tonight, she won 5th place in a large, nationally-ranked class of women.
I feel so happy that I was able to be here to support her. Seeing my mom achieve a goal she’s worked so hard for – even through the weird diet and constant workouts – makes me smile. She’s determined to win her “pro card” as a figure athlete, no matter how long it takes to earn that ultimate prize.
And that’s what I love the most about my mom.
