I get a lot of emails from aspiring coaches who are looking for advice about starting their practice. Because I offer coaching as a part of my business here on happyblackwoman.com and over on rosettathurman.com, it seems that many people think I have this big, profitable coaching practice. Not so. In fact, if I were to just rely on the income I receive from my coaching services, I’d be broke! Although I certainly cultivate a steady stream of coaching clients from month to month, it’s crucial that I also maintain alternative streams of income to ensure that my business is sustainable.
A Four-Step Process for Making Space for What Really Matters to You
“Being human is a precious situation, and we shouldn’t waste time on useless activities. This conclusion motivates us to look at what to cultivate and what to discard.”
– Sakyong Mipham
Ever since I came back from Europe, I’ve been living in Richmond, Virginia. (Why Richmond? I went to college here. Proud to be a VCU alum! After being away for eight years, the city feels familiar, yet completely new all at the same time.) Right now, I live in an extended-stay hotel that’s close to everything I need in the city. After that, I plan to move into another cheap sublet that will allow me to continue saving money for my next international trip! I used to dread moving, but now that I’ve drastically downsized my living situation, it’s easy for me to imagine traveling from place to place. How easy? All the clothes I own now fit into one 20-gallon plastic bin.
Event Recap: HBW Fall 2012 Happy Hour in NYC
On Thursday night, I hosted my first Happy Black Woman Happy Hour in New York City! It was also the first stop on my Fall 2012 Happy Hour Tour and it far exceeded my hopes for how I wanted the event to go. I decided to have the happy hour at the bar in the hotel I was staying at because, honestly, I was afraid that no one would show up! I figured if no one came, I could just slink back down to my room LOL. I was worried about whether anyone would turn out because I don’t really know anybody in New York like I do in DC, where the previous happy hours have been held.
But, you know what they say…
“Feel the fear and do it anyway.” – Unknown
Three Life Lessons I Learned from My Month in Europe (Video)
I know, I know, this is like the third video I’ve made in 2012. I may just be on a roll here, LOL! I took my iPhone to the woods to record this 8-minute video with some reflections about my recent month-long trip to Europe.
You Could Die Today
“You can’t decide how you’re going to die. Or when. What you can decide is how you’re going to live now.” – Joan Baez
Because I’m weird like that, lately I’ve been thinking about the saying: “You could die tomorrow.” Hey, it’s a popular phrase.
But how come no one ever says: “You could die today?”
Travel Diary: How to Spend a Week in Barcelona
- After multiple pizza orgasms in Naples, I hopped a plane (via Vueling Airlines) to Barcelona, Spain for the last week of my European adventure. It was such a great place to end my trip because Barcelona turned out to be the quintessential European city – a mixture of Greek, Italian, French and Spanish influences. This city had it all. Plus, I got to meet Mickla, a HBW reader and fellow blogger to explore the city with. (P.S. Check out Mickla’s lovely personal blog, Littlefoot’s Journey).
I spent a whole week in Barcelona so I got to really explore the city without feeling rushed on my way to the next destination. Here’s some of what I did (and what I recommend) while I was there!
Live Your Way Into What’s Next
On my last morning in Naples, I try sfogliatelle. I sit outside at a cafe and eat the flaky pastry filled with sweet ricotta and orange peel. It’s delicious and they sell it at every coffee shop and corner store in the city!
Travel Diary: I Ate Pizza in Naples and Now My Life is Complete
Eating pizza in Naples is was on my bucket list. I didn’t really know anything else about the Italian city beside the fact that it was the birthplace of pizza. And seeing how pizza is one of my absolute favorite foods, I salivated thinking I might one day get the chance to taste The Real Thing.
Travel Diary: I Hiked the Cinque Terre in Italy (and Lived to Tell About It)
Like I said, I don’t even LIKE hiking. The most exercise I’ll do willingly is walk around the neighborhood for a bit every day so that I get some regular physical movement in my life. So when someone on the Tuscany tour suggested that I do the hiking one as well, I shook my head. “No, I don’t hike,” I said. Because I don’t. But last week, in Italy, I did. And it was pretty amazing.
Travel Diary: I Drank Wine in Tuscany
I scheduled two unforgettable tours while I was in Florence. If you plan to come to Italy, they would both be on my “must-do” list! It just so happens both of these amazing tours were through the same company, Walkabout Florence, which made it even easier to book. Also, the meeting place for the tour buses was a mere five minutes from my hostel! Here’s what I did, saw and enjoyed on the first tour.
