How to Start a Side Hustle: Find Your Sweet Spot (Video)

September 23, 2011 | By Rosetta |

This is the sixth post in the How to Start a Side Hustle series.

Most people never get started with their side hustle (and therefore never start their dream business) because they have so many ideas that they can’t bring themselves to pick just one to pursue. If that’s your issue right now, I have a 20-minute video training to share with you today that may help. In the video below, I talk about how to find your “side hustle sweet spot,” that awesome place where your passion, expertise and market intersect.

Inside the video, you will discover:

  • My story of how I went from side hustle to full-fledged business (and how I make my money now)
  • A step-by-step method for finding your “side hustle sweet spot“ – why this is so important and how it can help you overcome “analysis paralysis” in your business
  • Plus an extremely geeky picture of the 13-year old Rosetta – don’t laugh!
Also, below the video is a button to download the Side Hustle Sweet Spot Worksheet. Print it out now, then watch the video where I walk you through the process.

How to Start a Side Hustle: 28 Passion-Based Business Ideas You Can Launch Online

September 15, 2011 | By Rosetta |

This is the fifth post in the How to Start a Side Hustle series.

Whenever I have a conversation with someone who says they can’t start their dream business because they don’t have the money, I immediately go into brainstorming mode with them. Why? Because I see people making money with their talents and passions every.single.day. using free or cheap online marketing tools. While it may be true that you don’t have much money right now, it’s a great time to start thinking of ways you can leverage the internet as a low-cost marketing strategy to change your situation and bring more benjamins in the door.

This is what I usually talk about when I coach people on how to start a side hustle. What many people still don’t realize is that most small businesses actually start off as side hustles while the owner still has the financial cushion of a full-time job. It takes some of the risk off of you and gets your feet wet, all while allowing you to make money on the side to supplement your lifestyle or to save up for that big dream trip around the world. But what kind of business can you start with little to no funds? These days, almost any business can be launched and built online! In many cases, getting a basic website up is all you need to start letting people know you’re open for business.

Here are 28 different ideas from 28 black women who are using online tools like blogs, YouTube, email newsletters and e-commerce websites to get their side hustle (or full-time hustle!) on. I’ve linked to them as examples to further inspire your own entrepreneurial spirit. The possibilities available with today’s technology are endless!

  1. Virtual assistant (see Jessica Pinkney)
  2. Beauty blogger (see Afrobella)
  3. Vintage clothing reseller (see Zulu Gypsy Vintage)
  4. Social media consultant (see Organic Fusion)
  5. Freelance web designer (see Artiatesia Deal)
  6. Social media manager (see Tamara Rasberry)
  7. Etsy shop owner (see junkprints)
  8. Professional speaker (see Rosetta Thurman)
  9. Life coach (see Nailah Blades)
  10. Fashion blogger (see Curvy CEO)

  14. Author (see Demetria Lucas aka A Belle in Brooklyn)
  15. Natural hair vlogger (see KimmayTube and her online store Luv Naturals)
  16. Career coach (see Tai Goodwin aka the Career Makeover Coach)
  17. Food/health blogger (see Halona Black)
  18. Baker (see Tweet’s Sweets)
  19. Ghostwriter (see Evelyn Bourne)
  20. Photographer (see Tru Shots Photography)
  21. Freelance copywriter (see Jamie Fleming aka Mocha Writer)
  22. Mommy blogger (see Cutie Booty Cakes)
  23. Wellness coach (see Takeyah Young)
  24. Business and technology consultant (see Rochelle Robinson)
  25. Travel blogger (see Johnica Reed)
  26. Interior designer (see Erika Ward)
  27. PR coach (see Amanda Littlejohn and Mopwater PR)

What’s your side hustle? Do any of these ideas spark new possibilities for your own brainstorming?

Is it Time to Start Your Own Business?

July 25, 2011 | By Rosetta |

The reason why I talk about entrepreneurship as a personal development tool here on Happy Black Woman is because starting my own business has completely changed my life. Through my education company, Thurman Consulting, I earn a full-time living as an author, speaker, trainer and coach for nonprofit leaders and passionate entrepreneurs. I operate three blog properties online that bring in business through multiple income streams. The freedom I have now is priceless. So naturally, whenever I find something that has made a difference in my life, I want to share it with everyone I know. I want to shout it from the rooftops so that all of my fellow sisters can hear: “Another life is possible!” That is, if you want it.

NO, you don’t have to work for someone else your whole life if you don’t want to.

NO, it’s not impossible for you to build wealth in today’s economy.

YES, you can use your God-given gifts to earn extra money to support yourself and your family in a bigger way.

YES, you can live your ideal life of being the CEO of You sooner than you think.

Our current economy is not something to be feared. It’s actually something to celebrate, because it allows ALL of us an amazing opportunity to fulfill our true purpose through entrepreneurship. So what’s stopping you?

Many women get intimidated by the idea of starting their own businesses – like it’s this big complicated thing. It’s not. In fact, most successful entrepreneurs began their journey simply by starting a business on the side aka a “side hustle” while they were working a full-time job. This strategy reduces the risk to you and your family, plus gives you a chance to to test out your business ideas in the marketplace. If given the choice, most of you would probably choose doing what you love over the job you have now, right? Well, now just might be the perfect time to turn those dreams into reality! If not now, when?

Is it time to start your own business doing what you love? If you’ve been thinking about taking the leap into entrepreneurship, what type of business are you considering?

Do You Have an Accountability Partner?

June 6, 2011 | By Rosetta |

Yesterday, I spent some time with my mom, a.k.a MY business coach. She’s been the ultimate accountability partner in helping me get to the next level in my business. We talk almost every day and she knows how to ask me the tough questions about how I’m spending my time and reminding me of the goals I set out to accomplish this year. Of course, it helps that my mom is an entrepreneur herself, with a business that’s already earning six figures, which is where I want to be! I’m able to get so much more done knowing that she’s going to ask me about my progress on a regular basis.

Do you have someone in your life like that? Do you have an accountability partner?

What is an accountability partner?

  • a friend, family member, co-worker, mentor, coach or someone else you can trust to help you keep a commitment
  • someone on the same path as you or simply willing to help you in your specific journey
  • someone who can help you stay on track toward reaching your goals
  • someone who stands firm and won’t let you get away with making excuses or procrastinating
  • someone who will ask you all those difficult questions we tend to avoid

It’s so important to have someone – paid or otherwise – to help keep you on track with your goals in life and business. It’s so easy for a year, five years, or even 10 years to go by and you still up there talking about how you’re “trying” to start a business, lose weight, get back into the dating game, etc.

There’s nothing wrong with asking or even paying someone to help you. It just means that you’re serious about your goals. And if you’re really serious about changing your life, wouldn’t you WANT someone to make sure you keep moving forward? Otherwise, it may never happen for you…

Of course, most of us already KNOW what we need to do to reach our goals. We know the steps, it’s just that we need help (a.k.a. a kick in the butt) to take action. Sometimes we get stuck because we’re holding a subconscious belief that we don’t deserve success. Sometimes we’re procrastinating due to a fear of failure. An accountability partner (and especially an actual coach) won’t allow you to let those blocks keep you down!

How to find an accountability partner:

  • Ask a trusted friend, family member, co-worker, or mentor to help you. Make an ongoing weekly or monthly appointment to share a “progress report” by phone or in person.
  • Hire a coach. The benefit of a coach is that she will be objective in helping you reach your goal, whereas sometimes our loved ones can have ulterior motives in the advice they give. It’s not on purpose or in any kind of malicious way, it’s just that they typically want what they think is “best” for you.
  • Seek out online communities where there are people who have the same interests and goals as you. You want to surround yourself with other people who are making positive changes in their lives, because they will be more likely to want to help you do the same thing. Personal growth is contagious!

Leave a comment:

  1. If you already have an accountability partner, how did you find them?
  2. If you want one, what’s the next step you will take to get one?

Start Today (an Affirmation for Aspiring Entrepreneurs)

May 16, 2011 | By Rosetta |

“A year from now you will wish you had started today.” – Karen Lamb

In my recent post, I shared with you my story about achieving my initial income goal within my first year of working for myself. Have you ever accomplished something that at first seemed impossible? If so, then you know how I’m feeling right now. Hopeful. Motivated. Optimistic for the future. And the best part is that now I have the opportunity to develop new goals for my life and business.

Now, I have the courage to play an even bigger game.

Right after I wrote that post though, I got an email from a reader that I wanted to share with you in case you might be struggling with the same thing. Or you may have some additional advice for our sister in the comments!

Hi Rosetta. I have been following your blog for a while now, and I really enjoy it. You are definitely an inspiration as far as entrepreneurship. I read your post today and I have been wanting to ask you, where did you get your training to be a life coach? I have been looking into several different programs, but I’d love to hear of where you got your training.

I actually get quite a few emails from aspiring coaches asking where I got my coach certification. I always make it clear that I am NOT certified, nor do I plan to be anytime soon. Most people don’t know that you DON’T have to have any type of certification to be a coach. None. It’s not required and the programs are usually quite expensive.

Here’s what I told her:

You are not required to have formal training to be a coach. I have successfully helped my clients for over 2 years without it. I am not certified, nor do I plan to be anytime soon. I will, however be taking my first-ever coach training course later this month in DC with acclaimed coach, speaker and author Valorie Burton.

We had a great follow-up exchange after that as well.

How did you start coaching people? I have been so incredibly hesitant to launch coaching/advice services on my site because of lack of training…I keep feeling that because I have not been actually coached to coach, I may not know enough to truly help people in their personal situations. Is it just my fear that is stopping me? What were the first steps you took and how did you know you’d be able to successfully serve people?

I love questions like this. They are the questions we already know the answer to, but that our lizard brain won’t let us see for ourselves. That’s why sometimes it takes confirmation from someone else.

Yes, it is mostly fear and not fully trusting in your own gifts. Your heart has already shown you that you are ready to serve…now it is up to you to listen and act. To answer your question, I just…started. And then the people showed up. I wish the same for you.

And YOU. Start now. Today.

I know. It seems so easy for me to say, right? Well, that’s honestly the very best thing I can say. Get going. Because the sooner you start serving people, the sooner you’ll be able to start learning along the way – what you need and don’t need. What you’re good at and what you’re not. There is never a “perfect time” to begin. There is no way you can or ever will know everything first.

Also: Don’t fool yourself into thinking more education will automatically make you successful in your business. Action plus results trumps all.

In fact, the best kind of training and validation you can get is by sharing your gifts and then seeing if they truly help people (or not). This, of course, can be terrifying.

You, gifted? Talented? World-changing? Yes. You. Our greatest gift is often the source of our greatest fear.

This is why we procrastinate. This is why we play it safe.

But remember that the only way to honor your gifts is to share them. Offer them up to the world. You never know where they will take you.

Today I wish you the courage to honor your unique gifts by sharing them with the world. Know that you are enough. You do not need anyone’s permission to follow your dreams.

Today’s Assignment

Share your responses to the following questions in the comments:

  1. What do you want your life to look like a year from now?
  2. What limiting belief are you holding onto right now that’s holding you back from taking action?

P.S. If you’d like to be coached by me, I’d be happy to serve you.
