The Happy Black Woman Gospel Playlist: 10 Songs to Motivate You to Keep Moving Forward

April 21, 2013 | By Rosetta |

j0433086

Lately, I’ve been adding a few songs to my Happy Black Woman Playlist to motivate me in the mornings, especially if I have a heavy personal issue weighing on my mind when I wake up. I’ve loved gospel music since I was a teenager – maybe even before that when I used to happily sing “This Little Light of Mine” in Sunday school as a little girl in my Grama’s church.

Although I no longer identify with any particular religious denomination, I still feel incredibly encouraged when I listen to music that focuses on the power of God’s love to help us overcome adversity and achieve great things in life. The beautiful thing about good music is that it transcends boundaries and speaks to so many people who need it at that time. And each of these songs remind us that no matter what obstacles come our way, we have the capacity to keep moving forward.

One of my Twitter followers recently asked me which gospel songs I listen to, so I thought I’d share my HBW Gospel Playlist on Spotify. I’ve been listening to it as I begin my day, ready to tackle any challenges that arise. I also found all these songs on Youtube so you can listen to them that way, too!

The Happy Black Woman Gospel Playlist

Hallejuah Anyway by Candi Staton

Go Get It by Mary Mary

Declaration (This Is It) by Kirk Franklin

In the Middle by Isaac Carree

The Best is Yet to Come by Donald Lawrence

Before I Die by Kirk Franklin

I Told the Storm by Greg O’Quin n’ Joyful Noyze

Blessings by John P. Kee

Miracle by The Clark Sisters (both versions)

Are any of these on your morning motivation playlist? Which gospel songs do YOU listen to that help you keep moving forward?

Trust Your Gut and Take the Leap: HBW Goes to Thailand!

March 15, 2013 | By Rosetta |

Photo from the villa where I’ll be staying in Koh Tao, Thailand

Back in 2011, I decided to give up my apartment in DC to reduce my living expenses and save money for international travel. Since then, I’ve gone on two extended trips –  Hawaii (Oahu) in 2011 and Europe (Greece, Italy and Spain) in 2012. My plan was to visit Asia last year, but I only had enough money to choose one trip and Europe turned out to be the cheaper one.

Then earlier this year, I came across an opportunity to travel to Asia with a group of entrepreneurs through a really cool concept called Project Getaway. Essentially, it’s a trip designed to bring together a few dozen location-independent professionals, business owners and creatives together in a tropical paradise for one month to work, relax and experience the adventure of a lifetime.

I’d actually heard about the group a while back from Stacey, a blogger I was following at My Lifestyle Max. She had gone with the group on a previous trip to Bali, Indonesia and shared about her experience. As soon as I heard about it, I wanted to go! SOMEDAY…LOL. I signed up for their mailing list to be notified about upcoming trips and was excited to learn that this year’s Project Getaway would be in Thailand! At the time, I hadn’t saved up enough money to go, so I brushed it off. Again, saying SOMEDAY.

About a month later, I got an update email from the Project Getaway trip organizers stating there was ONE spot left. Something in my gut told me not to delete the email. Think about it, Rosetta. Even though it would be a stretch for me financially, something within me said GO. You never know when you’ll get a chance like this again. Thailand is on my bucket list of places I want to visit before I die. I’ve been wanting to go for a long time, but since I’ve never been to Asia, this is one trip I didn’t really want to go on by myself. And now I had the chance to go with like-minded people that I could actually learn from, connect with and work on my business while living the island life for a month.

So I listened to my gut and applied for the open slot, both scared that I wouldn’t get in and terrified that I actually would. I had a Skype interview with one of the organizers and was accepted to join the group. I paid my fee for a shared room (the cheapest option available) and started putting money aside for my flight. I booked my flight today and I couldn’t be more excited to visit Asia for the first time! I’ll be gone for about a month from early April-early May.

I’ll be blogging more about my trip planning in the coming weeks and I’ll also try to document my experiences once I get to Thailand. For now, I just wanted to share what happened after I submitted my Project Getaway application.

Right after I pressed “submit,” it felt like I had declared my desires to the universe and it HEARD me. Things began shifting quickly in my business to bring more income into my life, even despite it being a slow speaking season for me. Both online courses I’ve offered so far this year have filled up, with people on a waiting list for the next ones. I’ve been able to collect on future speaking income right now by having clients I’ll be working with later this year pay me a 50% deposit upfront.

It’s almost like the universe was daring me to say YES to myself. And once I did, things began moving on my behalf. I’ve been working hard this quarter and I’m giving myself permission to experience some of that payoff sooner rather than later.

Is there a place where you’re being called to do this yourself? Maybe there’s an area in your life that you really want to improve or explore – your career, business, romantic relationships, health or even just your overall lifestyle. Attending to that space with dedicated focus for a few months could help you start seeing big results and new possibilities.

Instead of waiting for SOMEDAY, you might be surprised at what’s truly possible for you to do TODAY.

Is it time for you to start trusting your gut and take a leap?

This is the Year of Choosing

February 25, 2013 | By Rosetta |

My theme word for 2013 is DESIRE. And I’ve begun to notice how it’s already showing up in two main areas of my life map: relationships and business.

I’m being reminded of how much freedom there is in getting clear about what you really want. There is liberation in creating a vision for what you want your life to look like. And there is ongoing affirmation in taking that first step and watching in wonder as the universe paves a path for you.

2013 is already showing up with a whirlwind of clarity, handing me a mandate to shift the way I’ve been thinking about what’s possible for my life.

This is the year of choosing to do what you want to do, not what you think you should do. This is the year of not waiting for permission. This is the year you stop needing outside validation to make the choices you already know are right for you.

If you want to launch your own business this year, begin the process right now. If you want to find a better job, start networking to see what opportunities are out there. If you want to enter into a new romantic relationship, let it be known.

You don’t have to wait to be “chosen.” You can choose. (click to tweet this quote!)

Desire, as good as it sounds, is really only about knowing what you want. Choosing is deciding to actually go after it. Whether it’s a man or a client, it’s time to make your move.

Be willing to leave your comfort zone. To have a different life, you have to do different things. Allow the universe to show you a new way. (click to tweet this quote!)

This is the year of choosing instead of waiting to be chosen.

What will you choose this year?

Five Empowering Actions to Take After You Get Laid Off

February 20, 2013 | By Rosetta |

This is a guest post by Marcia McIntyre. Please welcome Marcia to the HBW Community!

Since 1989, I have always worked and never been laid off until now. Last week, my boss called me into his office to gravely inform me that he had to let me go – effective immediately – due to the company not having money to pay me anymore. It’s not like I was breaking the bank. Or maybe I was… Instead of feeling despondent and forlorn, I felt a great peace that God was going to help me through this. As I was packing up my desk, my co-worker looked on with the Bambi eyes. She said, “I feel like I was the one laid off.” I said, “You LOOK like you’re the one laid off! It’s OK. I will be fine.” As we hugged and parted ways, I really believed it and I still believe it.

But the next morning I woke up like, Crap! What am I going to do?

The first thing I did was read my Bible and write in my journal (my daily devotion). No reason to stop that now. After that, I looked at my vision board. The first thing that caught my eye that day was something I clipped out of a magazine that said:

Vision boards cue your subconscious to steer you toward stimuli and choices in sync with your goals.

I nodded in agreement and started my day. For some reason, I expected that to trigger something in my mind of the next great plan for my life. Instead, I got nada. So, I had to start listening to my gut, my instincts and my spirit. This is what I’ve done thus far.

Get a Separation Letter and File for Unemployment

Once you’re laid off, you are supposed to get severance pay. This wasn’t the case for me. So I asked for a separation letter and went to the Department of Labor to file for unemployment. Make sure your separation letter states the day you were laid off and why (it should be favorable if it wasn’t your fault). In the state I live in (Georgia), it takes approximately twenty-one to twenty-eight days before you start receiving it (if your former boss does not contest) and it will be retroactive. You will have to sit through orientation. You will have to check in weekly and certify. You will have to do it so just do it.

Continue Your Stress Relievers

If you go to the gym, continue. If you practice yoga or pilates, continue. If you run three miles a day, CONTINUE. Continue to do any of those things that help release endorphins to clear your mind and to give you some happiness. A happy and focused body is a productive body. Plus, it’s not fair to throw shade at those closest to you just because you’re miserable right now. I love my gym so much and now I can try all those different classes that they have during working hours like hot yoga, kickboxing or Aqua Fit.

Take a Breather and Write Down Your Goals

In other words: relax, relate, release (shout out to Debbie Allen on A Different World). While you’re in a temporary standstill, take this time to write down your goals, dreams, and wishes. Be specific and proactive in what you write, putting down the necessary steps it would take to accomplish those goals. If you spell it out, it will look more feasible to obtain and execute. I want to write, so guess what? I’m writing. Everyday. About whatever I feel like and it feels good. I’m gaining confidence to put myself out there more. I’m also networking with different writers to see which path is the best path for me.

Spruce Up Your Surroundings

Take note of your surroundings and environment. This is the perfect time to clean house and maybe try that Feng Shui to boost more creativity and peace in your sanctuary. I finally cleaned my room and found some interesting things to pique my love and interest in writing even more. I also realized how spacious my apartment is after I cleaned out a few boxes and threw them away. It definitely made me feel more attached to my home instead of feeling like a resident who only sleeps there at night. All of a sudden, Tamia’s song “Stranger In My House” came to mind.

Call the Bill Collectors Before They Call You

I didn’t realize how many bills I had until I no longer had income. Call all the people you normally send payments to and tell them of your situation. You may have to negotiate lower rates, change the date of your pay periods, or just straight pause/cancel that extra expense activity that you love to do cold turkey. This is already a tense time for you (and me) and we are trying to find a new job and the last thing you need is your phone blowing up because they didn’t get their moolah. You want your phone blowing up with awesome job interviews, not grizzly sounding men who sound like they will throw you in their trunk and drive you out to the harbor.

Well, that’s where I am right now. Good luck to you. Good luck to me. I’ll keep you posted on my next adventure!

What to Do When You Feel Lost and Stuck in Your Business

February 18, 2013 | By Rosetta |

“Trust in what you love, continue to do it, and it will take you where you need to go.” – Natalie Goldberg

I love talking about the possibilities of entrepreneurship and the freedom it can bring into your life. But I also believe it’s just as important to talk about the pitfalls as well. Today’s post is about my own pitfalls and the most painful year I’ve experienced in my business so far.

***

2011 was not a very good year for me. I had just quit my job the year before and was riding high off my first year of self-employed success. In 2010, I’d brought in a hefty income from my business. But in 2011, I made about $20,000 less. I lost a big consulting contract and I didn’t know how to immediately replace that money.

For the first time in years, I felt lost in my career.

Without the structure of an organization giving me a steady direct deposit, I didn’t know what my worth was anymore. I wasn’t sure what my true value was in the marketplace and that scared the shit out of me. I wasn’t used to that feeling, that knot in my stomach that appeared whenever I thought about where my next check was gonna come from.

This wasn’t me, man. The Rosetta I knew had everything planned out in advance. She had always been a high performer and an overachiever. Why should this business thing be any different? I was used to being successful at everything I did. But as a result of making one decision to quit my job, I felt like I had forfeited my identify in many aspects of my life.

Slowly, I began to fall into a depression over a period of several months. I noticed that I stopped going out as much as I used to. I wasn’t taking care of myself very well. There were weeks when I didn’t clean my apartment, when I just let the dishes pile up in the sink. I just didn’t have the energy to do much more than sit in my little makeshift home office in the corner of my studio, doodling in my notebooks trying to figure it all out.

During that time, I probably had some good days, but most of them were pretty rough. I felt unsure of myself all the time, which I wasn’t used to and definitely didn’t like.

I felt like I was failing.

The only thing I knew for sure is that I didn’t want to stay there, in that place of fear. Here’s some things I did that helped me push through the mental roadblocks to get my business back on track. If you’re feeling stuck between a rock and a hard place right now, they might help you, too.

Repeat a Daily Affirmation or Mantra

I didn’t have money to pay a therapist, so I sought out other resources to help me stay motivated as my business took a nosedive. What I kept coming back to during that difficult time were written and verbal affirmations like this one: Fear flows through me but it is not me. I am bigger than fear. I am beyond fear. Fear does not define me. I am not fear. I started choosing an inspiring quote or mantra to repeat in the mornings (that I often posted to Twitter as well). I began to read the daily passage from Mark Nepo’s The Book of Awakening (a fantastic book that I continue to use as part of my meditation practice). Through ongoing positive self-talk, I was able to shut off my stupid lizard brain long enough to remember that I still had something of value to offer the world.

Try Something New in Your Personal Life

In June 2011, I decided to try something new on the health front by embarking on a 21-day cleanse that required me to eliminate meat, dairy, sugar, caffeine and alcohol from my diet. All the good stuff LOL. During the cleanse, I began to get my energy back in a big way and started cooking for myself regularly again. A few months later, I made another big change by moving out of my apartment to reduce my living expenses, experience alternative living arrangements and save money for a trip abroad. This decision not only helped me do all of the above, but also inspired me to simplify my life and make room for other parts to emerge.

Go Somewhere to Relax and Get Out of Your Head

In late November 2011, I took a business trip to Honolulu, Hawaii to speak at a conference and decided to stay there for almost a month. It was a good opportunity for me to be out of my normal environment. I spent a lot of time on the island pretty much just doing nothing. Thinking, reading, eating, going to the beach. And writing. Lots of writing. My trip to Hawaii helped me get back to my center and reconnect with the vision for my ideal life. When I got back to the mainland, I was able to get out of “stuck” mode and start translating my deepest desires into actual plans for my business.

Rededicate Yourself to Doing What You Love

That year, I had to try really hard not to apply for full-time jobs. And believe me, I looked! I even got a few casual job offers through my network. The fork in the road was clear; I knew could always go back to a 9 to 5. Instead, I promised myself that as long as I kept getting enough clients to pay my bills, I would stay in business. Still, it seemed like I kept asking myself the same question. What do you love doing the most? The answer kept ricocheting like an echo in a deep cave: writing and teaching. If I’m honest with myself (and with you), I can admit that my answer has not actually changed much since I was in the first grade and the teacher used to ask us what we wanted to be when we grew up. In 2011, I taught my last course as an adjunct professor and began to teach more of my own workshops online. I rededicated myself to building my business around doing exactly what I loved. And when 2012 rolled around,  I had a rough plan for how to make it happen.

As a result, 2012 was my biggest year ever in terms of paid speaking engagements, book sales and online workshops.

Now that I can look back with some perspective, I know that I had to go through that year of feeling lost and being stuck to get to this point. I had to be reminded that I already have everything I need to be successful.

And that if I will just trust the universe and stay committed to my purpose, it will take me where I need to go.

Have you ever felt lost or stuck in your business? What eventually helped you start moving forward again?

There Are a Million Ways to Get What You Want

November 17, 2012 | By Rosetta |

Back in 2009, I thought I needed a PhD to change the world. I wanted to write books and journal articles and conduct research that would totally redefine the way we view leadership. So what did I do? I applied to a PhD program, got in, took out a $10,000 loan and went back to school. I even went part-time at my job so I could use as much time as possible for research and writing papers.

I was all in.

You Have to Go All In

November 7, 2012 | By Rosetta |

Along with millions of Americans, I watched Mitt Romney give his concession speech after all the major networks predicted an Obama win. After all that campaigning, Romney didn’t win the presidency. And if that wasn’t bad enough, he had to stand up and give a speech in the midst of his failure.  It looked painful, especially as his family trotted off the stage in Boston for the walk of shame.

It made me think of how devastating that moment would be for most of us. We’re already so afraid of failing at any level, that failing so publicly would prevent many people from showing their faces to the world for a long, long time.

This is always the risk of following your dreams, of going all in.

You Could Die Today

September 17, 2012 | By Rosetta |

“You can’t decide how you’re going to die. Or when. What you can decide is how you’re going to live now.” – Joan Baez

Because I’m weird like that, lately I’ve been thinking about the saying: “You could die tomorrow.” Hey, it’s a popular phrase.

But how come no one ever says: “You could die today?”
