HBW 011: Jesse Krieger on How to Build a Business and Brand Around a Book

December 7, 2015 | By Rosetta |

happy black woman podcast_feat _JESSE KRIEGER_capital letters_72dpi

Today’s guest, Jesse Krieger is an amazing example of the kind of life you can live if you strategically take action to make it happen. His publishing company, Lifestyle Entrepreneur Press is based around his personal success as a best-selling author, with his book hitting #1 in the Personal Success category on Amazon. He’s leveraged his success to help other entrepreneurs who desire to build a brand or business around a book get that book published and ranking high on the best-seller charts as well. In this conversation with Rosetta Thurman, Jesse shares some of his story and practical tips about heading into a life that allows you the freedom and income to pursue your dreams. You won’t want to miss this!

You can leverage a book to build your entire business. Find out how on this episode

You can build a brand and a business around a book, and Jesse Krieger is the man to show you how!

Even if you wrote a best-selling book that would likely not be the means by which you’d gain a ton of income. But the content of the book does a number of things for you. #1 – it enables you to have a “business card” that is a book, a way for you to demonstrate your expertise in a tangible publication that people naturally respect. #2 – it lays the groundwork for you to build additional content off the topics you cover in the book, anything from online courses and video sets, to live events and speaking engagements. There’s no limit to the ways you can leverage a book, if you know how to do it the right way. Today’s guest, Jesse Krieger, is the man to help you do it, so be sure you listen to this episode of the Happy Black Woman!

Start rough and improve as you go.

Jesse Krieger may be a best-selling author and a publisher, but his success didn’t happen on the first take. In this conversation he tells how he created a small, partly finished book, then modified it by adding more content, then continued to tweak and update it as he went along. That enabled him to get something finished and continue to build. Alongside his improvements, his business was growing at the same time. It’s a philosophy he subscribes to and suggests that you follow. Don’t wait for your “thing” to be perfect before you release it. Get it out there and make improvements as you go. That’s how you learn what your market wants and needs and it’s how you get yourself rolling toward creating the great things you have in mind. Learn Jesse’s thoughts on this important issue by listening to this episode.

Have you heard of the “big rocks’ philosophy of goal setting?

Jesse Krieger refers to an illustration his mentor taught him that uses a jar, large rocks, small rocks, sand, and water. It’s a great way to conceptualize how you should go about prioritizing things in your life and business. The original illustration was taught by Stephen Covey and it continues to be a guiding principle for many entrepreneurs and business people today. You can see the illustration in this video, or even better, listen to this episode of the Happy Black Woman Podcast to hear how today’s guest, Jesse Krieger, uses the concept to move his publishing empire forward month by month.

You want freedom? Then you’ll have to develop structure in your life.

That may sound a bit counterintuitive, but it’s actually very logical. Freedom is like any other goal, you have to put things in place that will enable it to happen. You can’t just live a free flowing life and expect your desired freedom to come about. Jesse Krieger, today’s guest, suggests that you need to put the systems and tools in place that enable you to manage the demands of life in a way that affords you the freedom of lifestyle and time that you want. If you don’t, you’ll be at the beck and call of whatever comes your way. Find out how Jesse does it on this episode.

If you want lifestyle freedom it’s going to require structure. Get the details on this episode

HBW 010: Crystal Porter on Hair Health and the Power of Serving a Unique Niche

November 30, 2015 | By Rosetta |

happy black woman podcast_feat _DR CRYSTAL PORTER _ capital letters_72 DPI

Today’s guest is Crystal Porter, Ph.D. She is the founder of Mane Insights, a company that gives tailored hair care advice, from a scientific perspective, to women with hair problems. Dr. Porter spent the majority of her 14-year career at L’Oreal, USA where she managed the Physics Laboratory and Consumer Insights teams to study the biophysical characteristics of hair and pigmented skin within different ethnic groups around the world and to understand behaviors that are related to consumers’ experiences. During the past eleven years, she has shared knowledge about ethnic hair to fellow scientists and the public at national and international venues. She has also contributed to L’Oreal’s global classification of curl in hair and has authored numerous papers, presentations and book chapters on hair straightening and ethnic hair. Her conversation with Rosetta today is full of insights!

What I’m doing now, I feel good about having my daughters watching.” – Dr. Crystal Porter

The road to becoming an entrepreneur was motivated by asking the deeper questions.

Dr. Crystal Porter was working full time in a very intense role for a large company. Even though she often told her superiors that she couldn’t continue to put in the hours that she was being required to give, they didn’t seem to understand or even care. Her life continued to be a stressful and her time with family was getting more and more scarce. She had to ask herself the deeper questions about what she wanted from life and what was important to her. That time of questioning is what led her to move into her own business as a way to continue the income she’d become accustomed to but also allow her the time to be with family and do the things that were important to her. Sound familiar? Dr. Porter’s story could be a great encouragement to you, be sure to listen!

A great example of niching-down to find a great opportunity.

Finding a niche and serving it with great profit, on the Happy Black Woman Podcast

It may not seem very probable that a company could be built purely on the need that Black Women have to have expert advice about how to deal with problems related to their hair. But Dr. Crystal Porter has discovered that not only does a relatively smaller niche such as that provide her ample opportunities for a great income, it also enables her to help many, many people with a very serious area of need. It’s an example of how there are many areas of need that nobody is servicing and how you can focus more narrowly to make even more income and meet more needs. Learn how Dr. Porter came to discover this great area of need on this episode.

Asking questions as a way of serving her audience.

Dr. Crystal Porter explains on this episode how she goes about helping a wide variety of clients who have very different needs, and it’s through the asking of good questions. She’s able to hone in on the specific needs an individual may have by asking the right questions. Her example is a lesson for any entrepreneur. You may have an idea of what your audience needs or wants but until you actually hear from them, you won’t really know. How can you ask better questions of your audience to discover the exact needs they have? Listen to this episode to hear how Dr. Porter does it and how you can take a similar approach in your business.

Working consistently within your values is powerfully important for the longevity of your business.

In her journey to becoming an entrepreneur, Dr. Crystal Porter was motivated by the disharmony she saw between the type of hours and drive she was required to put in at her place of employment and the inner beliefs she had about the priority her family should have in her life. She didn’t like that the sacrifices she was having to make in order to maintain her employment were at conflict with the needs she saw in her family. That’s why she made the switch to entrepreneurship. What are your values about life and work? What are you willing to do and what are you not willing to do? How can you leverage your beliefs about family and work to motivate you to build the business you want and need? You’ll find great encouragement from Dr. Crystal’s story on this episode of Happy Black Woman.

Don’t let other people’s problems become your own.” – Dr. Crystal Porter

HBW 009: How to Find Your Greatest Self Through Image Therapy with Liana Chaouli

November 23, 2015 | By Rosetta |

happy black woman podcast_feat _Liana Chaouli_CAPITAL letters_RES72 copy

Today’s guest, Liana Chaouli, has been in the work of Image Therapy for over 30 years. She wants to help as many people as possible to see their own beauty – to become empowered through their clothing choices. She loves to teach women how to choose clothes that flatter their bodies and made them feel worthy, strong, and as uniquely beautiful as they truly are, so they can show up authentically in the world! With thirty years’ experience as a custom clothing designer, color specialist, and a Master Couturier, Liana is a high-level clothing craftsman, patternmaker, and seamstress who understands all the facets of clothing that fits the way it should on your body. This is a very interesting conversation that reveals much of what Liana is about. You’ll be intrigued by the things she has to share today, on the Happy Black Woman podcast.

Image Therapy encompasses everything. Find out why on the Happy Black Woman Podcast

The confusing contrast of confidence in one sphere and insecurity in another.

Liana Chaouli was an interpreter at a foreign embassy when she saw this contrast for the first time, and it broke her heart. She was working with the wife of a foreign ambassador, a woman who was stately and confident in certain contexts. But at the same time, hidden deep within was a lack of confidence, possibly even a self-contempt that impacted the way she lived and most importantly, the way she felt about herself. It was that experience that motivated Liana to become an advocate for women (and eventually men as well) finding their true self and living out of the beauty of who they have been made to be. You can hear Liana’s unbelievable story on this episode of the Happy Black Woman podcast, so be sure to listen.

“When I see a client step into their greatness, that is the proudest moment for me.”

That’s what today’s guest, Liana Chaouli says when asked what makes her the most proud. It’s not about her or her accomplishments. It’s about seeing other people realize the deep truths about who they are and begin to live those out in the real world. It’s an honor she’s been able to have over and over as she’s worked with people from all walks of life, helping them understand their own personal style and come into their own. You can hear about her fascinating approach to helping people on this episode of The Happy Black Woman.

“If we want to get bigger, there is a way.” – Liana Chaouli

Inspired by the presence of awe.

When Rosetta asked Liana Chaouli who inspires her, the first answer she gave was “children.” But she quickly rephrased her response to explain that it’s the awe and wonder that children experience and express that is what inspires her. She feels energized and alive, ready to tackle the next dream when she sees people enjoying and living in the wonder of life. It’s her desire to do that through helping people maximize their wardrobe and appearance to reflect the real person who is inside. Learn more about Liana’s approach and work on this episode of the Happy Black Woman Podcast.

The #1 tip Liana Chaouli gives to the Happy Black Woman community.

On the road to your destiny you’ll have many people tell you that you can’t do it, that you should do it, that it’s dangerous or foolish to go after your dreams. Liana Chaouli has advice for anyone who finds themselves facing that kind of discouragement: Don’t listen to people. Well meaning people will bring their past into your present to destroy your future, if you let them. You can’t listen to their objections or discouragement. You have to stick to your guns and keep pressing toward your dreams. Rosetta Thurman draws this kind of advice out of her guest today so do what you can to block out some time to listen to this episode.

HBW 008: How to Be Unapologetic in Your Life and Business with Allyson Byrd

November 16, 2015 | By Rosetta |

happy black woman podcast_feat _Allyson Byrd_CAPITAL letters72dpi

This week’s guest, Allyson Byrd, has come to be known throughout the business community as the “Profit Accelerator.” Her success has taken her into the league of big industry names like: Walmart, Kraft Foods, Ford, Mercedes, Bank of America, General Motors, UPS, P&G, Walt Disney Company, Walgreens, Target, Wells Fargo, Time Warner, Delta, Boeing, Toyota, Mercedes, Coca Cola, Chic-fil-A, Radio One, Black Enterprise, BET, CVS, Best Buy, Infusionsoft & more! In this week’s episode of the Happy Black Woman Podcast Allyson, shares not only her inspirational story but also some practical mindset tips for how you can increase the profit in your business. Hit the play button and settle in to learn from this amazing woman.

“I was fueled by the opinions of others…and that doesn’t work.” – @AllysonByrd

Click To Tweet

What if I just chose to unapologetically be me?

That’s the question Allyson Byrd asked herself after she’d spent far too long gauging herself and her success by the opinions of others. That question is what sparked her move to a better place, a place where she doesn’t apologize for who she is – and she doesn’t think you should either. Allyson didn’t always have it easy but she wouldn’t change a thing in her journey because that journey is what has made her who she is and brought her to where she is today. She’s ready to help take your business to the next level through her unique method of accelerated profit strategies… and gives you a powerful peek into those approaches in this episode, so be sure to listen.

What it means to be unapologetic.

Too many of us tether ourselves to the expectations and demands of others about who we should be, what we should be like, and how we should interact and behave in the world. Today’s guest, Allyson Byrd discovered that her tether didn’t allow her to live in the reality of who she had been created to be. When she was able to accept that there was nothing wrong with who she was, even though it sometimes made others feel uncomfortable that she was so bold and strong in her words and opinions, her life and her business began to take on a new level of effectiveness and joy. Being unapologetic means first becoming comfortable with yourself, then learning to actually BE that person in everyday life, without making excuses for it or moderating it because of the opinions of others. Allyson has some great insights into how you can apply that truth to your own story, on this episode of the Happy Black Woman Podcast.

“What if I just chose to unapologetically be me?” – @AllysonByrd, on this episode

5 words Allyson Byrd has learned to live by…

Her background and upbringing conditioned Allyson to filter herself by the opinions of others but when she discovered how it stifled her from being her true self she found true freedom. As she’s grown in being herself she’s adopted 5 words that describe the way she wants to live and those 5 words could be a starting place for you to consider the kind of life you should be living, too. What are those 5 words? Unapologetic, Unfiltered, Unleashed, Unstoppable, and Untameable. They are words that communicate freedom and purpose. How do those resonate with you? Allyson’s got lots to say about what those words might mean for you, so be sure to listen.

Allyson Byrd’s #1 tip to the Happy Black Woman community.

When Rosetta asked Allyson what tip she would give to the community, her answer was characteristically blunt. “Make money.” After laughing together a bit, she unpacked what she means. She doesn’t focus on making money out of greed but as a way to communicate how making money comes from a place of confidence and how making money can buy freedom, give you access to the things you need in life, and how it can give you the opportunity not only to move your life forward but to make an impact on the lives of others. So making money is the way you can make a difference. Hear more on this episode.

HBW 007: Sales is About Service: A Soulful Conversation with Natasha Allrich

November 9, 2015 | By Rosetta |

happy black woman podcast_feat _Natasha Allrich _CAPITAL letters72dpi

Natasha Allrich is Rosetta’s guest today on the Happy Black Woman Podcast and she’s got a wealth of inspiring, soul-stirring encouragement for you. Natasha is known as the Soulful Sales Expert and she specializes in helping entrepreneurs who hate to sell but know it’s necessary. Her goal is to show you how to STOP selling and START having conversations that convert into clients. It’s an amazing mindset shift and practice that often results in immediate, multiplying sales growth. In today’s conversation Natasha shares her own daily routines, how she stays on track in her business, and the mindset shifts that help you turn sales into a service rather than a pitch. You’ll be enriched by listening to this episode.

How Natasha Allrich discovered that the problem she had with sales was a problem of receiving.

Natasha learned her elementary sales skills from envisioning and promoting a non-profit organization that was close to her heart. It was easy for her to step into that role, to ask people to join her in a vision aimed at helping children across the globe learn how to read. She saw it as being an advocate for the children and helping others come alongside her to be an advocate as well. When someone brought it to her attention that she was actually selling by asking for donations, she resisted the idea. It seemed too selfish to call it selling but in time, she saw that it was true. That began her personal mindset shift. She began to see that she had a hard time speaking of “selling” because she had a hard time receiving from others. Hear the entire story on this episode.

“Our problem with sales is about our ability to receive.” – @natashaallrich

Click To Tweet

Sales is about service: to others and to yourself.

One of the biggest reasons women entrepreneurs mention as why selling is difficult for them is that it seems pushy or sleazy. Do you see how that impression is as much a mindset as it is a reality? Surely you’ve been served by a salesperson who didn’t seem that way, right? What was different in that situation? It’s likely that you felt the sales person was truly interested in you and eager to serve you to meet the need you had. Natasha Allrich says that one of the most important mindset shifts that needs to happen around selling is this: Selling is about service – to you and to the potential buyer. You are helping them and they are helping you. It’s a win-win sales situation. Natasha’s refreshing way of approaching sales will get you excited about the possibilities of taking on a new approach to this often troublesome area of business. Listen in to this episode to hear all the details of her approach.

Black women are taught that it’s not OK to ask for help. It’s a lie.

In her successful coaching and sales career, Natasha Allrich has learned that rethinking her role as a business owner and entrepreneur included reconsidering what she could actually do on her own and what she couldn’t. Deep inside her was a belief that it wasn’t OK for her to ask for help or to rely on others to complete certain aspects of her goals or dreams. When she came to the realization that she MUST rely on others, a new journey began. HBW 006: How Tara Jefferson Turned Her Blog Into a Business That Helps Young Moms

November 2, 2015 | By Rosetta |

happy black woman podcast_feat _Tara Jefferson_capital letters72dpi

Tara Jefferson was a new mom with lots of dreams, but she was still in college and didn’t have what she considers a “real” job to support her new family. She made a commitment to herself then and there that by the time her daughter was 2 years old she would be supporting herself in her own business. That’s some unusual grit, but Tara had it, and her dream has become what is now www.TheYoungMommyLife.com, a blog and resource for young mothers. Tara’s site provides teaching, advice, support, and encouragement for young moms who want to be great moms and even better women. In this episode Tara’s going to share her journey with you, the ups and downs, the struggles, and the victories. You’re sure to get a lot of encouragement and ideas from this great episode.

You have to take care of yourself.

Many young mothers are determined to prove to the world that they can be a great mom. That’s a great goal. It shows the kind of determination needed to be a young mother. But many times that determination translates into a work ethic that denies that she, the mom in question, has very legitimate needs herself. In that scenario she usually winds up giving and giving to others without filling up her own tank. Tara Jefferson has made it her goal to build a site and community that supports those moms and offers them a load of resources to make sure that they are able to take care of themselves first. You can hear Tara’s journey story to her successful mommy-support business in this great conversation.

She tracks her time to make herself aware of where she’s not being productive.

In this conversation one of the intriguing topics that came up was personal productivity and goal setting. Rosetta asked her guest, Tara Jefferson, how she goes about keeping herself productive in any given week. Tara shared a simple but very effective tool that has helped her stick to her priorities and get things done. She used a free “time tracking” app to keep track of what projects she’s doing and how long it takes her to get them done. Doing this enabled her to see what she’s doing repeatedly that is a time waster, how much time she should allot for typical tasks like writing a blog post, and how she can streamline her workflow to get more done. It’s a valuable tip she shared on this episode, and there are lots more where it came from, so make sure you listen.

A powerful productivity tool for your business…in this episode of the Happy Black Woman Podcast

What is freedom, to you?

That’s a question Rosetta likes to ask all of her guests, and today’s guest, Tara Jefferson answered in a very common sense way. Freedom for Tara is being able to make her own decisions about what she’s going to do everyday. If she wants to start work early, she can. If she wants to start later, that’s up to her. If she would like to take the day off to go to an activity at her child’s school, she can do it. She doesn’t have to ask anyone. She doesn’t need permission. She’s able to adjust her schedule and plug things in where they make the most sense on any given day. That, to her, is an amazing freedom she didn’t even know she’d love so much. Tara shares so much, in such a genuine way, on this episode.

An event for moms who need a time of refreshing.

One of the things Tara Jefferson loves to do most is to host events for women to come together, learn, get a break from the responsibilities of everyday life, and build relationships of support that can sustain them over the long haul. She’s done quite a few of these events to date. If you’re interested in connecting with women in a supportive, encouraging environment, this is the event for you. You can find out more details about the event at www.YMLRetreat.EventBright.com.

HBW 005: From Fired and Facing Cancer to Successful CEO: Dr. Monikah Ogando’s Story

October 26, 2015 | By Rosetta |

happy black woman podcast_feat _Monikah Ogando_capital letters72dpi

She pivoted her firing into a brand new business, on the spot.

In this episode of The Happy Black Woman podcast you’re in for a real treat…it’s the story of how Dr. Monikah Ogando became a leading business coach and instructor as well as the CEO of her own business. It wasn’t your typical journey. She had been teaching a course for her employer all over the country and felt she was very successful in corporate America. But when she was called in to a meeting that she believed was going to be a positive one, she was actually fired. The company intended to hold on to the intellectual property she had created, but she hadn’t signed an intellectual property agreement. So she kept her training course as her own, struck a deal to be a consultant with the company to continue the trainings for them, and started her own business on the spot. Hear her tell the story herself, on this episode.

From Fired to Focused: How @MonikahOgando turned being laid off into a successful business

Facing cancer and starting a business at the same time.

When Dr. Monikah Ogando was fired from her job at a high level financial planning company she pivoted the rejection into one of her greatest opportunities. But there was another big problem. She’d just been diagnosed with cancer and didn’t know what impact that might have on the fledgling business she was starting. How would you handle that? Would you have the strength, confidence, and resilience to fight both of those battles at the same time? Listen to Dr. Oganado’s explanation of how it happened and glean some principles of mindset and belief that you can apply to your own journey.

“You have to decide if you’re going to live or die.”

When Monikah was diagnosed with cancer her head was spinning. Then she got fired from her corporate job and that same day began her new consulting and speaking business. It was a tough week. In the back of her mind her health situation loomed. She made her decisions in a non-committal way many times because she wasn’t sure if she’d actually be around to enjoy the fruit of her labors. That’s when a mentor said, “You have to decide if you’re going to live or die. Because the things you do will be different if you intend to live than they will be if you intend to die.” That moment of clarity gave Monikah the ability to set aside her fears and fight the cancer, with every intention of living to care for daughter and build her business. Hear the whole story on this episode.

“Instead of making fear your enemy, make it one of your trusted advisors” – @MonikahOgando

How an introvert CEO keeps herself going.

Very few people who meet Dr. Monikah Ogando would think she’s an introvert, but that’s how she describes herself. When she’s in her role as CEO of her company or coaching and training, she’s outgoing, friendly, and engaging. But that’s her business role. She steps into those shoes because it’s her calling, her passion. But as a true introvert she needs time alone to unwind, regroup, and rejuvenate for what lies ahead. How does she do it? It all comes down to the way she manages her weeks and protects her weekends. She sets boundaries and guidelines that serve her health, emotionally, spiritually, mentally, and physically. That way she’s ready to go when Monday comes again… ready to fulfill her calling. You can glean some valuable tips from Dr. Monikah on this episode, so take the time to listen.

There is nobody coming. God sent you!

There’s something about modern culture that pushes us toward depending on others or hoping for a circumstance to turn out fortuitously in our favor. But Dr. Monikah has learned that hoping doesn’t get the work done. Hoping doesn’t accomplish things. Hoping doesn’t fulfill dreams. As a result she’s developed a short saying to remind herself to go for the dreams she’s got inside. “There is nobody coming. God sent you!” The idea is that she shouldn’t be looking for someone or something to rescue her. Instead, she needs to understand that God placed her exactly where she is, at this time, in this place, for a reason. SHE is the one who’s supposed to make the changes that she’s hoping will come about.

HBW 004: How to Do Less and Be More with Queen Code Founder Molesey Crawford

October 19, 2015 | By Rosetta |

happy black woman podcast_feat _Molesey Crawford_capital letters72dpi

In today’s episode of The Happy Black Woman Podcast, we have the honor of speaking with Molesey Crawford, founder of “The Queen Code,” a personal development community that is changing the lives of women all over the globe. As you listen to this episode you’re going to hear how Molesey learned about her own feminine desires and self, how she channeled that into a business that was true to who she really is, and how that business has grown to provide her with the true channel of expression and purpose she was meant to have while providing her and her family with the freedom they enjoy today. Be sure to take the time to listen to this one, it’s a real gem.

What IS the Queen Code?

Molesey’s journey toward becoming the founder of the Queen Code has not been overnight or easy. It’s through that journey that she discovered the principles of the Queen Code in the first place (as it should be, right?). She believes that there’s a feminine evolution happening in the hearts of women all around the globe. Women are beginning to awaken to the truth that they are here for a reason. She believes that women all over the globe are feeling the calling to return, rebirth, reconnect, recover, remember and reclaim their feminine birthright. She desires to support those women on a journey of deep healing and transformation. Hear more of her journey to those realizations and how she’s helping women all over the world as you listen to this episode.

You need the “know who” before you need the “know how” – @thequeencode

Click To Tweet

Finding a mentor early on made all the difference.

Molesey’s business was still very small and she had almost no money when she first decided to find and pay for a mentor – and she’s never regretted it. In fact, that decision was the catalyst to moving her life and business forward in a powerful way. She started with $10 a month as part of a coaching program and now has elevated her involvement with her coach to a much higher level, and it’s continued to reap great rewards. If you’re stuck, needing help, or even moving backwards in your entrepreneurial or personal development, you may need to take that bold step and find a coach or mentor that fits your lifestyle. These two ladies (Molesey or Rosetta) may be just what you need. Find out more on this episode.

“The longer we stay in indecision, the longer we are kept from what we want” – @thequeencode

Be. Do. Have. That’s the sequence in which personal transformation and business success comes.

Molesey Crawford has discovered that nobody can have a truly free lifestyle and invigorating business without first going through this necessary sequence. BE – has to do with discovering who you are and what you are passionate about. Only when you function out of the fullness of your identity are you able to bring your intended value to the world. DO – This is the action step, where you put your dreams and calling into action. Most people start here and find themselves spinning their wheels and becoming burned out and frustrated as a result. HAVE – This is the aspect where you begin to receive the fruits of your labors and see the fulfillment of the calling you’re acting on. Hear Molesey explain this progression on this episode.

Slow down so your blessings can catch you.

Too often women are so busy doing that they fail to BE who they truly are. Too often they believe that what they do is what makes them who they are. But the reverse is true. It’s time to stop all the hustle and busy-ness so that you can find your true self, learn to do your work out of that place, and see the blessings that flow more naturally as a result. Moseley Crawford has learned these principles and they are what guide her work at The Queen Code. Hear her explain the importance of embracing and applying these concepts on this great episode of The Happy Black Woman, with Rosetta Thurman.

HBW 003: The Secret to Running a Successful Faith-Based Business with Girlfriends Pray Founder Dee Marshall

October 12, 2015 | By Rosetta |

happy black woman podcast_feat _DEE MARSHALL_capitals_72dpi

Today’s podcast is all about you and equipping you to build the life that you’ve been called to build. And today’s guest is going to offer some spiritual inspiration AND get down to the practical nuts and bolts of how to do it! Girlfriends Pray founder Dee Marshall is considered to be on the short list of top coaches for women. She has built a women’s empowerment empire that inspires, encourages, motivates, challenges and supports women. In this conversation with Rosetta Thurman, Dee shares some of the best get-your-life-in-order tips we’ve had on the podcast yet! You’ll walk away with some great ideas and plenty of strategies you can do to take not just your business, but your everyday life to the next level.

“Happiness comes from living a life of purpose” ~ Dee Marshall

Business and ministry, all in one package.

When Dee Marshall talks about “Girlfriends Pray” she lights up. That’s because the mission of the organization is something God put in her path and that she delights to be a part of. It’s a movement to get women all over the world united in prayer, seeking God and His best for their lives and the worlds they touch. But Dee is also a businesswoman and coach whose expertise and knowledge is sought out by many top level women of faith who are in the business world. How does one woman pull off so much in two distinctly different areas? She shares the key to her success in this episode of the Happy Black Woman podcast, and you’ll be surprised how simple it is.

How structure can set you up for massive success.

There are lots of “free spirits” out there, women who love to be spontaneous, living on the edge day to day, enjoying whatever life brings their way. Dee Marshall is one of them. But she says that women who are leaders cannot allow themselves to be so free spirited that they lose all sense of intentionality. Leaders have to live according to structure because people and results depend on the actions they take. For that reason they need to organize their lives around basic structures that can provide the context through which their dreams can be realized. Hear how Dee Marshall does this in her own life as she breaks down her daily schedule for all of us to hear, on this edition of the podcast.

Get a handle on your life so you can do what is on your heart

What really makes you happy in life?

That’s the question Rosetta Thurman asked Dee Marshall near the end of this conversation, and Dee’s answer was very powerful. What she says is this: When you live a life of purpose, you are happy. She wakes up happy every morning because she knows that the things she will be involved in during that day are lasting, important things that will make a difference in people’s lives. That’s meaning. That’s purpose. And it’s the source of ongoing happiness for Dee. Listen in to hear how you can find that purpose for your life as Dee shares her perspective on how to get it.

Dee Marshall’s #1 tip for women who want to build a business they love.

Dee doesn’t hold back on this episode. When Rosetta asks her to share her best tip for women wanting to move forward with a passion or a business, she says this: You do need to pursue something you are passionate about, but don’t let the passion take over the business. It IS a business so make sure you run it like one. You have to be concerned with things like income, costs, conversions, bottom line, because if you aren’t you might as well quit today and just follow your passion as a side project or hobby. Keep clear on the facts that if you want to have a business that follows your passion, you’ve got to organize and structure it so that it can support you to pursue that passion.

And a bonus tip from Dee Marshall…

If you want your level of success to grow, then you’ve got to be growing. Work on you. Keep yourself always in the stream of personal development. Without constant improvement you’ll fall into the rut of seeing things the way you’ve always seen them. You can’t afford that. Your success and business growth will be hampered by it. That’s it. Keep growing. Hear more powerful but practical advice like that on this episode of Happy Black Woman.

If you want your level of success to grow, then you’ve got to be growing
