How to Make the Right Decision, Every Single Time

Life Mapping workshop at the Happy Black Woman Hawaii Retreat!

“If what you are doing is not moving you towards your goals, then it’s moving you away from your goals.” – Brian Tracy

We had a great time at our Happy Black Woman Hawaii Retreat! It was a week full of learning, connection and FUN!

One of our wonderful attendees summed it up so beautifully in her blog post reflecting on the week-long experience:

“It all starts with a mindset. We have to be ready to receive. We have to stop limiting ourselves. There were two televisions in my suite and not once did one of them get turned on. I got so much work done in Hawaii because I was completely focused and I will keep that going while I’m here. I worked on my business and was able to have a fantastic time on the island. Good food, drinks, friendships, atmosphere … it was everything.”

One of the themes of our Hawaii retreat was the importance of getting clarity on what you really want and making decisions that support those goals. As bizarre as it sounds, we often make decisions that lead us in the complete OPPOSITE direction of our ideal lives!

Quiz: Do You Have a Struggle Mentality?

September 2, 2014 | By Rosetta |

Do you have a struggle mentality-Today, I received a message from a woman – we’ll call her Sandy – who is having trouble making money in her business. There was one part of Sandy’s email that really touched me and inspired me to write this post.

“I have never not had to struggle. It is all I know and the people around me also have that struggle mentality. But I know without a doubt God has a greater purpose for me in mind. I was not meant to merely to survive, but to thrive.”

Do you have a “struggle mentality,” too? Do you find yourself getting in your own way every time you try to move forward with your goals?

If so, you are certainly not alone in your thinking. It’s a major mindset shift that many women in our Happy Black Woman community have to make when they decide to pursue their dreams.

How to Find Your Purpose

June 3, 2014 | By Rosetta |

If you had met me back in 2007, you would have encountered a relatively successful young woman living in Washington, DC. I had been placed in a senior management position at a regional nonprofit in the city. I loved my job, but behind the professional facade, I still felt unsure about what I was really supposed to be doing with my life.

After months of being confused about my next steps, I stumbled upon a powerful tool from Stephen Covey (author of the bestselling book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) that would change the course of my life. Immediately after I applied this concept, I started getting serious about figuring out WHY I was born, WHAT I was put here on earth to do and HOW I could go about doing it.

How to Create a Personal Altar in Your Home (Even if You Have a Small Space)

May 9, 2014 | By Rosetta |

1545648_866836023342365_2693814071271888944_n As a faithful student of personal growth and the field of positive psychology, I’m a big fan of any practice that invites more happiness and fulfillment into our lives. Over the years, I’ve developed many habits that have enhanced my outlook on life and helped me achieve some of my big goals.

Now there is one tool that I’ve been wanting to incorporate into my life for a long time…a personal altar! There are a lot of different variations out there, but a personal altar is essentially a sacred space in your home that serves as a “spiritual center” where you can focus on being your highest self. It also consists of specific items meant to invite positive energy into your life. Last week, I took the time to gather all of the items I needed to set mine up and I can already feel the powerful spiritual shift it’s made in my living space.

Here are some basic guidelines you can use to create your own personal altar…even if you have a small space!

How to Quit Your Job Without Burning Bridges

November 4, 2013 | By Rosetta |

Quit Your Job

For many working women, advancing in your career may involve knowing when to leave your current job to pursue new opportunities. Use these tips as a guide to handle your own resignation when you’re ready to move on to a better job or work in your own business full-time. (Note: You’ll find more career tips in my book, How to Become a Nonprofit Rockstar: 50 Ways to Accelerate Your Career to help you navigate your professional journey. Although the book was written with nonprofit professionals in mind, the concepts and strategies work for advancing your career in any industry!)

Sometimes, you start a great job, and it’s just not what you expected. Maybe you really love the company, but it’s your tedious duties that are driving you crazy. Or, maybe you really enjoy your day to day, but you just don’t think you can last one more pay period working for that terrible boss. Perhaps you’re just burned out and ready to try something new. It could be time for you to explore other job opportunities with more pay and more responsibility. No matter what your reasons are for wanting to leave, if you’re ready to quit your job, you want to make sure you leave on good terms. Even if it was the job from hell.

Here’s how.

You Don’t Have to Find Out You’re Dying to Start Living

May 22, 2013 | By Rosetta |

j0433076

“Many people die with their music still in them. Why is this so? Too often it is because they are always getting ready to live. Before they know it, time runs out.” – Oliver Wendell Holmes

Look around and you will see how many people spend more time “getting ready” to live than they do actually living their ideal lives. We often spend our time playing it safe instead of doing exactly what we want to do. Fear causes us to make never-ending excuses for not going for it. But what if you were more conscious of the fact that you’re going to die soon?

Rainn Wilson’s Soul Pancake has a video series called “My Last Days” where they document the struggles and uplifting stories of terminal illness. Last night, I watched the story of Zach Sobiech, a teenager diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. With only months to live, Zach used his love of music to say goodbye. (Tissue alert: I cried during most of this video and it was worth it to have my heart opened in such a powerful way.)

Zach passed away this week on May 20, 2013. But before he left this earth, he spent his time sharing his life and music with the world, inspiring millions of people with his song, “Clouds.”

Would you make different decisions in your life if you were more present to your own mortality? Unlike Zach, you probably don’t know exactly how long you have left to live, but at least you understand the truth that none of us will live forever. Looking at the big picture, you can see that you have a very limited amount of time to accomplish and experience the things you desire. This awareness is a very freeing state to be in.

If you can remember that you’re going to die, possibly sooner than you think, you might be more likely to:

Stop engaging in petty arguments and gossip. Ask yourself if this situation would matter if you only had a few months left to live. If the answer is no, why let it bother you now? Why waste any more moments of your life stuck in anger and negativity? Instead, spend that time doing something that actually makes you happy!

Stop working at a job you hate and put in the effort to find one you like. We spend at least 25% of our lives working, so why not give yourself the gift of enjoying what you do? Or at least find a way to authentically connect to the people you encounter at work, making a crappy job seem much more tolerable.

Start doing the things you’ve always wanted to do. Go to the places you’ve always wanted to go. Do the things you wrote down on your “bucket list” years ago when you were feeling optimistic and brave. Remember that you don’t have to wait until you have the right friend or partner to take that cross-country road trip with. You can go now and experience the adventure all by yourself!

Start taking more risks on yourself. Instead of choosing “security” over uncertainty, you have the power to take a chance and step outside of your comfort zone. Ask yourself what’s more important to you – not failing/looking stupid OR seeing yourself achieve something that deep down, you already know you’re capable of doing.

Whenever you feel paralyzed by the fear of doing something different with your life, call forward the truth that these are, indeed, your last days and it’s up to you how you will spend them. It won’t be too long from now when you will close your eyes for the last time.

Maybe all the best moments of your life will flash by like a movie and you’ll remember how beautiful the moon looked that night in Paris or the way the audience gave you a standing ovation after hearing you sing your song.

Or maybe you won’t remember anything at all.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION: Are you living the life you want right now or are you still “getting ready” to live it? How would you be spending your time if you knew you only had a few months left to live?

I’d love to hear your thoughts! Leave a comment below and join the conversation – our HBW Community is becoming a great place to connect with like-minded ladies, ask questions and get support :)

What I Love the Most About My Mom

November 10, 2012 | By Rosetta |

With my MOM @livinthefitlife after her figure competition in Atlanta! She won 5th place in her class :)

I’m getting settled in Atlanta after spending a few days in Charlotte, NC to speak at a conference. (Stay tuned for a full recap from last night’s HBW Happy Hour in Charlotte!) The main reason I wanted to come down to Atlanta this weekend was to root for my mom at the 2012 NPC Bodybuilding Championships. Mom has been a personal trainer and fitness coach for many years and participated in her first competition back in 1994. Since last year, she’s competed in five figure competitions, including this one. Tonight, she won 5th place in a large, nationally-ranked class of women.

I feel so happy that I was able to be here to support her. Seeing my mom achieve a goal she’s worked so hard for – even through the weird diet and constant workouts – makes me smile. She’s determined to win her “pro card” as a figure athlete, no matter how long it takes to earn that ultimate prize.

And that’s what I love the most about my mom.

How the Either/Or Fallacy Keeps Us Stuck

November 3, 2012 | By Rosetta |

As the end of 2012 looms closer, I’m already slipping into reflection mode about what I’ve done this year for my business. I have accomplished many of my goals, but of course, I could have done a lot more. Ever since I started working for myself, I’ve valued the integration of my work and life. For example, when I downsized my living situation, I was able to focus a lot more on writing vs. consulting because I didn’t have to earn as much money as I did when my expenses were higher. As a result, I chose not to take on any additional long-term consulting clients in 2012. I didn’t want to. And financially, I didn’t have to.

As I begin to think about what I want to experience in 2013, one of the things I’ve been reflecting on is the possibility of moving back to DC sometime next year. When I packed up my apartment in August 2011, I vowed that I would never rent another studio for $1,200 a month. My rent had already gone up the year I moved out of the city and I keep hearing that costs are steadily increasing. So if I wanted to live in DC again, my income would have to go WAY up. I would have to get a full-time job.

Or would I?

Four Practical Ways to Increase Your Happiness at Work

October 22, 2012 | By Rosetta |

On any given weekday, you’ll find thousands of gainfully-employed ladies complaining about their jobs on social media. I often see tweets and Facebook posts about how people are dreading going to work on Monday or that they can’t wait until Friday so they can get away from their boss from hell. A recent Conference Board survey confirms that over half of American workers are unsatisfied in their jobs. Especially after a particularly bad or hectic day, it can seem impossible to stay positive with all the challenges you may face at work.

No matter what you’re going through at your 9 to 5 though, it’s important to remember that your boss is NOT ultimately responsible for your job satisfaction. You are. If your career isn’t going the way you want it to, it’s up to you to either change it or get out of there and seek out new opportunities. You can’t go around blaming other people for “making” you unhappy in your job – at some point you have to take matters into your own hands. Try these actions to increase your happiness at work – starting right now.
