Day 4: Create or Improve Your Website

October 4, 2011 | By Rosetta |

This is the Day 4 post for the 7-Day Side Hustle Challenge. Learn more and join us here!

Now that you have a clear idea of how to talk about yourself in relation to your side hustle, it’s time to start telling the world – online! These days, you are able to do this cheaply and easily using a simple blog as your website. (Yes, if you already have a blog, you really don’t need a separate website!) For today’s assignment, you have two options depending on whether you have a website yet. If you don’t have a website yet, start a blog using Option #1. If you already have a website, improve it using Option #2.

Option #1: Create Your Website

If you don’t have a professional blog yet, I highly recommend you download my FREE ebook, The Complete Beginner’s Guide to Starting a Blog. Geared toward newbie bloggers, this easy-to-read guide will take you from soup to nuts in terms of your blog concept, software, design, content, promotion and analytics. Longtime bloggers will also benefit from the marketing angle of the ebook which outlines how to build your personal brand online through blogging.

After you get the technical stuff out of the way, the best ways to make your blog work for you in your side hustle are to:

  1. Use it to promote your personal brand and become the “go-to” person in your niche.
  2. Write and share great content that helps your audience.
  3. Promote the hell out of it.

Option #2: Improve Your Website

If you already have a website, use today to write or tweak your about page using the bio you crafted yesterday. Your about page may include some or all of the following:

  • A welcome message
  • Your bio
  • A professional-looking photo of yourself
  • A brief explanation on what your site is about
  • Links to some of your best blog posts that illustrate the essence of your personal brand

You can title your about page simply “about” or perhaps one of the following:

  • About the author
  • About me
  • About (your name here)
  • About this blog
  • What this blog is about
  • Who is (your name here)?

Need more inspiration? Check out these awesome about pages from some popular folks in the professional blogosphere:

  • Afrobella: http://www.afrobella.com/about-afrobella/
  • Danielle LaPorte: http://whitehottruth.com/about/
  • Mocha Dad: http://www.mochadad.com/aboutmochadad

Once you create or improve your website, post the link in the comments section below! It may also be useful to look at other participant’s sites to obtain ideas or to offer feedback.

Day 3: Write a Great Bio

October 3, 2011 | By Rosetta |

This is the Day 3 post for the 7-Day Side Hustle Challenge. Learn more and join us here!

Yesterday, you developed a three-word brand and thought more deeply about what reputation you want to have in relation to your side hustle. Today, you’re going to take that three-word brand and incorporate it into your new-and-improved bio that you will be able to use on your website and social networks to promote yourself.

The reason why bios are so important for side hustles are because if you have a full-time job already, your network may only know you as an HR professional, for example. Then, when you try to sell your luxury candles on the side, people get confused about why you’re doing it and what it has to do with your passion. So, you need to have a bio that you use when marketing your side hustle.

Here is what a great bio should include:

  • Your real name and name of your company (if applicable)
  • Your side hustle (tell us you do or sell)
  • Your “why” (share your passion, mission or reason for starting your side hustle)
  • Your education, experience or expertise (related to your side hustle)
  • Any special training or certification (credentials related to your side hustle)
  • Something interesting or memorable about you
You can write your bio in the first person or third person; it’s up to you how you want to use it to communicate your brand to potential clients and customers.

Here’s the official bio that I use in my business as an example:

Rosetta Thurman helps nonprofit leaders and passionate entrepreneurs change the world. She is the President of Thurman Consulting, an education company that offers speaking, training and coaching in the areas of leadership, entrepreneurship and social media. Her mission is to empower a new generation of leaders through personal and professional development. Rosetta is the co-author of How to Become a Nonprofit Rockstar, 50 Ways to Accelerate Your Career, an accessible, do-it-yourself map of how to build a successful career in the nonprofit sector. Since 2007, she has been blogging about nonprofits, leadership and social media on her popular blog at rosettathurman.com. Rosetta holds a Master’s Degree in Nonprofit Management from Trinity Washington University and a Bachelor’s Degree in English from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is proud to be a member of the Young Entrepreneurs Council and the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network. Rosetta has also taught nonprofit management as an Adjunct Professor in the School of Professional Studies at Trinity Washington University. In 2008, she was named a “New Leader in Philanthropy” by Greater DC Cares. In her free time, she writes poetry, cooks fancy food and listens to old school jams. She also tweets. A lot.

Post your new bio in the comments! It may also be useful to read other participant’s bios to obtain ideas or to offer feedback.

Day 2: Develop Your Personal Brand

October 2, 2011 | By Rosetta |

This is the Day 2 post for the 7-Day Side Hustle Challenge. Learn more and join us here!

Yesterday, you defined your side hustle and got specific about what you’re selling on the side. For those that are not yet in the process of selling your product or service yet, it may have been difficult to articulate, but at the very least, you’re much closer to being able to market yourself effectively.

Once you’re clear on what your side hustle is, then you should begin to build your personal brand around it. What is a personal brand? It’s essentially your reputation. It’s what people say about you when you’re not in the room. And if you want to start a side hustle, you’re going to have to start developing a reputation as the person who has experience or expertise on the particular topic or interest area related to your product or service.

One exercise that I often do with my clients to begin to refine their brand is the three-word brand exercise. Your assignment for today is to answer the following question to help you develop your personal brand:

What three characteristics  do I want my potential clients and customers to think of when they think about me?

These can be personal or professional attributes, experiences, expertise, values or accomplishments that you want to be known for in your business.

Post your “three-word brand” in the comments! Having a clear idea of the personal brand you want to portray is critical in being able to sell yourself and your hustle.

Day 1: Define Your Side Hustle

October 1, 2011 | By Rosetta |

This is the Day 1 post for the 7-Day Side Hustle Challenge. Learn more and join us here!

Even when we think we have a great business idea, it can still be a fuzzy concept until we’re put into a situation where we have to explain it to someone else. Our first exercise will be to define your side hustle in a way that others can easily understand by answering the three questions below:

Three questions to ask yourself to help define your side hustle:

  1. What am I selling? (What is your product or service? Describe its attributes. What do people receive when they pay you? Be as specific as possible.)
  2. Who am I selling it to? (Who is your target market or audience? What are the characteristics of the people who would want to buy your product or service? What is their gender? Where do they live? Again, be as specific as possible.)
  3. What’s so great about what I’m selling? (What are the benefits to the people who use your product or service? Why would they like it? What great things have other people said about it?)

Post your answers to the questions above in the comments! Writing this out will help you define and refine your side hustle and help you begin to talk about it more frequently and market it more effectively.

The Biggest Lie We Tell Ourselves and What Happens When We Believe It

September 9, 2011 | By Rosetta |

As much as we complain, you would think that our problems are all caused by other people. If only THEY would change, then our lives could be so much better! Fortunately, that sentiment could not be further from the truth. The truth is, our unhappiness and dissatisfaction in life does not come from other people and what they do or even what they say about us. It comes from the beliefs that we have about ourselves.

It took me a long time to realize that I alone held the key to my own happiness, and that anything else was a defense mechanism developed to avoid my own responsibility for my life. Sure, we can go through life blaming other people for our own unhappiness, but if we are being completely honest, we can see that the majority of our discontent comes from the biggest lie we tell ourselves.

We are not enough.

Our hair is not enough, so we have to get expensive weaves all down our backs. Or spend hundreds on every shiny new product we can get our hands on to make our natural hair more wavy, more curly, more “good.” Everyone knows that our HAIR is our glory! Not, you know, who we are inside as a person.

Our clothes are not enough, so we have to spend thousands of dollars every year to get the latest outfits, shoes and accessories. Who cares about credit card debt? The important thing is not to be left “behind” by wearing last season’s fashions!

Our bodies are not enough, so we have to get butt implants and lipo and botox to be able to “compete” with the next woman. We just want the weight off and the wrinkles gone now instead of developing a healthy lifestyle that might help us achieve those same goals. Everyone knows that the logical standard of beauty is Halle Berry or any of the cover models of Vogue. Duh!

Our degrees are not enough, so we have to keep getting more education and more debt. More Masters. More PhDs. Otherwise we won’t be taken seriously in the workplace. No one will ever listen to us without more letters behind our name. Our voices need validation!

Our suffering is not enough, so we have to constantly “outsuffer” one another and compare how bad we have it in life. We also have to delight in other people’s suffering by tearing them down with gossip and snark both online and offline. Because bullying people on Twitter is fun! Making light of other people’s pain is cool! Besides, everyone else is doing it. Right?

Our love is not enough, so we don’t take chances in relationships. We’ve come too far in life to get rejected or played! We don’t want to put our heart on the line because everyone knows that all men are dogs. Yes, they are animals, not real people. We’d much rather put ourselves through predictable drama by getting into unhealthy relationships than taking a risk on something new that might actually work.

Our talents are not enough, so we don’t go after our dream jobs or start our dream businesses. Why even apply when no one’s gonna hire us anyway? Why start a business when the economy is . . . whatever everyone is saying it is? It’s much better not to try. Besides, then we can complain and commiserate with each other about how we’re underpaid and overworked and our boss is a jerk. Yay!

As you may have noticed, this post is heavy on the sarcasm. It is not meant to judge anyone in particular, but to demonstrate how harmful and unproductive our behavior can be when we believe the lie that we are not enough. It is only when we stop living on autopilot and start investigating our beliefs that we can then stop the madness and get on with the lives we REALLY want and deserve.

Where in your life are you acting from the belief that you are not enough? How would your life be different if you truly believed that you are already amazing and complete, just as you are?

How to Be in Your Power (and Stay There)

July 23, 2011 | By Rosetta |

I’ve recently fallen in love with the phrase “stay in your power.” I think I heard it on a teleseminar somewhere a while ago, and it has stuck with me ever since. For me, staying in your power means not letting your fear or any naysayers distract you from using your gifts to fulfill your true purpose.

But I think for most women who know what their purpose is, I’m probably preaching to the choir. You already know what I mean when I say to STAY in your power. It’s all well and good if you’ve already figured out how to access your inner wisdom at this stage of your life journey.

But what if you’ve never even experienced BEING in your power in the first place?

If you’re in that group, then this is where I’d like to focus you today. Most of the challenging situations we experience in life are challenging only because they leave us feeling frustrated, confused or powerless. But what if we were able to approach any obstacle with the confidence that we already have the power to overcome it? Well, then we would surely experience success in all areas of our lives.

Here’s what it means to be in your power, plus what that might look like for you in action.

Being in your power means:

Owning your ability to do whatever it is you want to accomplish in your life and business.

What that looks like in action:

    • Not blaming other people for why you’re not getting ahead.
    • Not making lame excuses about not having enough time or money to do what you need to do.
    • Taking the steps needed to achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself.

    Being in your power means:

Trusting yourself and the choices that are truly made for you, by you.

What that looks like in action:

      • Not getting caught up in your need for other people’s approval.
      • Doing what makes you happy, regardless of what other people say or think about it.
      • Examining all of your choices to see if it’s really what YOU want or what someone else wants FOR you.

Being in your power is an amazing path to personal freedom. Staying there means remembering these simple concepts and putting them into action in your life. The ultimate truth is that you are beautiful, powerful and free. Everything else is a lie.

When was the last time you were in your power? How could you consciously access your power the next time you find yourself feeling frustrated, confused or powerless?

Is Your Religion Holding You Back from Succeeding in Life?

      July 6, 2011 | By Rosetta |

‎”It is not uncommon for people to spend their whole life waiting to start living.” – Eckhart Tolle

I hesitated in writing this post for a long time because I didn’t want anyone to take it the wrong way. But honestly, if you’ve been following me for any length of time, you know that my intention is for everything I say to come from a place of love and service. That said, I felt so compelled to ask this particular question today because I’ve been having conversations with many sisters who struggle with self-sabotage in various ways. For black women in particular, our religious or spiritual beliefs often play a huge part in our decision-making . . . or lack thereof. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard ladies say things like:

      • “I know I need to change my life, but I’m just waiting on God to show me what to do.”
      • Or: “I want to accomplish XYZ, and I’m leaving it up to the Lord to tell me when it’s time for me to take the first step toward my goal.”
      • This one’s my favorite: “There’s nothing I want more than a fulfilling romantic relationship, so I’m just gonna sit in the house and wait for God to send a good man to knock on my door and sweep me off my feet.”

If we’re honest with ourselves, we can admit that for the most part, we already know exactly what we need to do next in our lives. God has given us so much power and knowledge as human beings. 99.9% of the time, we don’t need any more advice. We just need to take action. But the thing is, even when these ladies do actually receive a sign or a gut feeling telling them exactly what to do, they freeze up.

They don’t take any action whatsoever, even when the universe is telling them that it’s time to make a move.

As it turns out, many women seem to be using the excuse that they are “waiting” on God as a socially acceptable phrase to mask the fear of actually moving forward and succeeding in life. I call BS.

      The Paradox of Faith

As someone who very much believes in God and the divine order of the universe, I know how difficult it can be to discern whether you’re making decisions that are truly driven from a place of love or if you’re acting out of the familiar place of fear (which is the opposite of love). Do you want the truth, though? In any given situation, you will likely be called to take action before you have all the answers. You will need to step out on your faith even before you know what the outcome is going to be and despite what “real world” odds may be against you. This is the paradox of faith.

      Fear is Not Faith

I believe that our faith journey is all about learning how to choose love over fear and fulfill our true purpose for being on this earth. If you believe this, and if you believe in the strength of your own infinite possibility, then you know that your steps will always be guided along the way. You know that you don’t need anyone else to validate you. Yet all too often, we still seek out that constant validation from others because we’re so afraid of getting it wrong. Or even worse, what people will think of us if we fail. But we have to remember that fear is not faith. Action is.

      Put Your Faith Into Action

If you are a spiritual or religious person, you face the challenge of trying to listen to your faith, while at the same time navigating through the negative energy of what the rest of the world is doing. It can sometimes seem as if your options are limited because of all the doom and gloom talk about the economy or the supposedly sad state of affairs for black women looking for love. Of course, none of this is your concern. Your role is continue to pray or meditate or whatever practice you use to set an intention. Just don’t pray for opportunity if you’re not going to take it when it comes to you. Because it WILL come. And it will probably come much sooner than you think. That’s what happens when you start taking your purpose seriously. That’s what happens when you put your faith into action.

As you’ve probably figured out by now, my answer to the question that I posed in the title of this post is a resounding NO. God is not to blame for why you’re not succeeding in your life. You are. And it’s time to stop using your religious or spiritual beliefs as an excuse to play small. It’s time you finally began sharing your unique gifts with the world.

Have you been using your religious or spiritual beliefs as an excuse to procrastinate on living your ideal life? If so, what’s one thing you can do today to change that?

How to Have a Different Life (or One Year as the CEO of Me)

      May 10, 2011 | By Rosetta |

Like everyone else, I did my taxes last month and could hardly believe my eyes when I submitted the paperwork to the IRS.

I earned $60,000 in revenue in 2010, my first year of business for myself.

Of course, $60,000 certainly doesn’t make me rich (hello, expenses!), but the significance of this number, for me, is that it’s pretty much the same amount I was making as an annual salary in my previous full-time job.

Rewind back to January of last year. When I first quit my job, I was totally excited, but I’d be lying if I told you I wasn’t also scared. The fear and the lizard brain were there the whole time, even as I began to build my business, work with coaching clients, get speaking gigs and create my own training programs.

Most of the time, I didn’t know exactly what I was doing, or exactly what the outcome of my efforts would be, but I kept going anyway. Which is how I ended up here today, having proven to myself that it’s absolutely possible to have a different life if you’re willing to work for it.

How to Become the CEO of You

A lot of Happy Black Women often comment here on the blog about their goal to leave their job and work for themselves. Many are in the process of doing so right now! If that’s you, I’d like to continue to offer encouragement and link you to tools that might help you in your journey. I know how discouraging it can be to struggle making $10,000 a year on your own, let alone the equivalent of a full-time income. But the first thing you need to know is that “the economy” has nothing to do with you. People are still buying products and services (and they always will). Your job is just to make sure they buy from YOU. So don’t blame “the economy” on why you can’t get your business off the ground. It’s a weak excuse, and I know you’re better than that. To get started, you may want to read my How to Start a Side Hustle blog post series.

The second thing you should know is that blogging and social media are responsible for 99.9% of the leads I get in my business. Without my online presence, I would have NO business. Seriously. If you don’t have a professional blog yet, download my FREE ebook, The Complete Beginner’s Guide to Starting a Blog. Geared toward newbie bloggers, this easy-to-read guide will take you from soup to nuts in terms of your blog concept, software, design, content, promotion and analytics. Longtime bloggers will also benefit from the marketing angle of the ebook which outlines how to build your personal brand online through blogging.

How I Make Money in My Business

I operate as a sole practitioner in my business, which is based in Washington, DC (though I can “work” from anywhere). My clients and customers are mostly women – young professionals, nonprofit leaders and small business owners.

Here are all of my income streams (in order of financial significance):

      • Consulting services
      • Speaking fees
      • Part-time teaching as an adjunct professor
      • Book sales (I have 2 books for sale)
      • Affiliate marketing through my blogs (I have 3 blogs)
      • Career, business and personal development coaching
      • Online training programs

As you can see, I have a VERY diverse range of income streams, which together averaged $5,000 a month for my first year of working for myself. This year, I’ve been working to streamline my income to eliminate consulting and teaching, because they require a lot more time than the others and make me feel like I’m working a 9 to 5. My goal is location independence with my business so that I can travel and spend more time with my family.

But you know what the funny thing is? A year ago, I wouldn’t have believed I’d be this close to reaching that goal so soon. Last month, I got to go to Cincinnati for a speaking gig during the same week that my grandmother was having surgery. I had the opportunity to get paid as well as spend a few days with her in Ohio. I took my laptop so I could work when I had to, which wasn’t much. This is the life I had envisioned for myself last year. What started out as a side hustle has become a fulfilling business and career that both sustains me and allows me an enormous amount of freedom over my time.

Yes, it’s hard, but it’s actually not that hard. Not harder than working for someone your whole life just to “retire” and have fun, relaxation and wealth when you’re 65. That life is NOT for me. It never was. This is how to have a different life: Confess your big dream. Take the first step. Commit yourself fully. Distance yourself from negative people. Ignore the economy.  Get training. Work hard. There really isn’t one magic formula other people have that you don’t. A different life is available to you if you want it.

      Today’s Assignment

Post your responses to the following questions in the comments:

      1. What does your “different life” look like?
      2. What’s the first step you need to take to become the CEO of you?

60 Personal Mantras That Inspire the Courage to Overcome Fear and Change Your Life

      April 20, 2011 | By Rosetta |

If you’ve been following the blog, you probably know that the first exercise in my 31 Days to Reset Your Life program is to choose a personal mantra. A personal mantra is a positive phrase or affirmative statement that you say to yourself for the purpose of motivation or encouragement. This could be your favorite quote, proverb, spiritual truth or religious saying that motivates and inspires you to be your best self. Today I wanted to share a few (okay, a lot) of the ones that HBW readers have so generously posted here on the blog as we have taken the challenge to reset our lives as an online community. Enjoy and be inspired!

      1. “Some periods of our growth are so confusing that we don’t even recognize that growth is happening…Those long periods when something inside ourselves seems to be waiting, holding its breath, unsure about what the next step should be, eventually become the periods we wait for, for it is in those periods that we realize that we are being prepared for the next phase of our life and that, in all probability, a new level of the personality is about to be revealed.” – Alice Walker (via Miss Lucy)
      2. “What the caterpillar calls the end of the world the master calls a butterfly.” (via GG)
      3. “Take the shoes off of your teeth and quit running your mouth about what you are going to do and put them on your feet and take some steps or run towards accomplishing your goals.” (via Dr. Cynthia)
      4. “I choose to LIVE.” (via Sharon)
      5. “I am flexible and flowing, open to the new and changing, at peace, and I trust in the process of life. Every moment is a new opportunity to become who I am. I move, with life.” (via N)
      6. “It’s time for you to move, realizing that the thing you are seeking is also seeking you.” – Iyanla Vanzant (via Kim)
      7. “My time is limited and I will not allow the noise of others’ opinions drown out my own inner voice. I will have the courage to follow my heart and intuition.” (via LaToya)
      8. “Action conquers fear” — Peter Nivio Zarlenga (via Christen)
      9. “I am willing to forgive. Forgiveness of myself and others releases me from the past. Forgiveness is my gift TO me, FOR me. I forgive, and I am free.” (via N)
      10. “The creator of the universe is lining up things in my favor.” – Joel Osteen (via Rosalyn)
      11. “Action is the antidote to despair.” – Joan Baez (via Jeannie)
      12. “The size of your success is measured by the strength of your desire; the size of your dream; and how you handle disappointment along the way.” – Robert Kiyosaki (via ArtDeal)
      13. ” Deep within man dwell those slumbering powers; powers that would astonish him, that he never dreamed of possessing; forces that would revolutionize his life if aroused and put into action. Don’t wait for extraordinary opportunities. Seize common occasions and make them great. Weak men wait for opportunities; strong men make them. Joyfulness keeps the heart and face young. A good laugh makes us better friends with ourselves and everybody around us.” – Orison Swett Marden (via Nesochi)
      14. “Don’t put a question mark where God has put a period.” – Joel Osteen (via Kim)
