Travel Diary: My First Day in Israel – Tel Aviv and Jerusalem

My international journey continues…

I’m excited to announce that I was selected as one of four participants for the 2015 Vibe Israel Women Entrepreneurs Tour!

Vibe Israel is a nonprofit organization based in Tel Aviv that hosts week-long, all-expenses paid tours of Israel for online influencers and bloggers to meet the people who make up the local scene in the fields they write about. In return, they share their experiences with their millions of followers.

Israel has actually never been on my list of places where I wanted to travel, but when I received the invitation to apply for the tour, I became instantly curious about this small country that I only knew for its religious significance among Jewish people.

Event Recap: 2015 Launch Your Business LIVE in Atlanta

I’m still in a daze from our 2015 Launch Your Business LIVE 3-Day Boot Camp! We had an amazing 3 days in Atlanta and it was so powerful to see our Happy Black Woman community come together in person for a weekend of training, networking and support for their business.

There were almost 100 women who joined us from all over the country to learn practical strategies for getting their businesses off the ground!

As usual…we laughed, we cried, we danced, we learned, we connected and of course, we feasted on delicious food and drinks along the way. I loved our signature tropical cocktail, the “Happy-tai!”

When I made the decision to shut down my nonprofit consulting business in 2013, I had no idea Happy Black Woman would grow so fast.

Just two years later, it’s amazing to see my vision turning into a reality. All I’ve ever wanted to do since I was a little girl was teach and now I get to do that on MY terms.

At the event, we enrolled a fantastic new cohort for our yearlong Happy Black Woman Mastermind Program, we pre-launched my second book and coming full circle to my nonprofit days, we were able to raise over $5,000 to support the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta!

I’m grateful to have an awesome team helping me build Happy Black Woman so I can serve this beautiful tribe at a higher level, plus give myself permission to take more time off this year!

Right now is one of those moments when I can’t believe this is my life.

I keep being reminded, over and over, that this work is so much bigger than me.

And that whenever I let go of my fears and just follow my purpose, miracles happen.

Giving Back to the Next Generation of Women in Business

I just wrapped up my 2nd annual Launch Your Business LIVE 3-Day Boot Camp in Atlanta! To be honest, I’m still processing the magnitude of the transformation that our Happy Black Woman community experienced this weekend.

It’s hard to pick my favorite moment over the course of 3 amazing days, but at the top of my list is what we were able to do together to give back to the next generation of women in business.

How to Build a Great Virtual Team for Your Online Business

As a location-independent business owner, I thrive in an online environment so my team has to be virtual as well! I get questions all the time about staffing and what kind of people you should hire to help you run your online business.

I’ve just gone through a process of adding new staff members and upleveling my team here at Happy Black Woman, so I wanted to share some ideas and resources you can use as you begin to hire your own support staff. Click here to learn more about our incredible team!

When I first started my nonprofit consulting business part-time back in 2008, I didn’t see the need to have anyone helping me. And I definitely wasn’t keen on the idea of paying someone to perform tasks I could do myself.

But as I learned more about what it really takes to run a business, it became painfully apparent that I could not grow without having some additional help with scheduling client appointments, organizing my speaking engagements, helping me implement marketing strategies, customer service, etc.

I started off with grad student interns who worked 5-10 hours a week and then I moved up to virtual assistants with more advanced skills. I found my first interns through my own network of colleagues by simply posting an ad on my blog. It worked out great!

Years later, at this stage of my business, I have identified my “dream team” organizational chart of four core team members, plus a handful of what I would consider “as-needed” contractors and freelancers.

Are You Walking Your Talk as a Coach?

As we prepare for what will be an EPIC Launch Your Business LIVE 3-Day Boot Camp in Atlanta, the word “possibility” has been heavy on my mind.

Because what my team and I have been hearing a lot lately is:

I wish I could come to the event, but I can’t take off from work.

I know I should be there, but I can’t travel to Atlanta.

This is exactly what I need right now, but I can’t afford it.

It got me thinking about something one of my mentors, Valorie Burton, told us at her Coaching Training Institute many years ago.

Work Is Love Made Visible: Why I Quit My Job 5 Years Ago

I was sitting on the beach in Waikiki the other day and I realized a shocking fact:

As of this year, I’ve been working for myself longer than I’ve ever worked for anyone else.

It’s been more than 5 years since I quit my full-time nonprofit job in DC. And to be honest, at this point I feel like I’m permanently unemployable!

I was only 27 years old when I left my job and made the decision to become self-employed.

And I don’t regret it one bit.

Of course, there have been ups and downs and twists and turns.

For instance, I had no idea that after 3 years, I would end up shutting down my first business to build a new one!

But it was the very best chance I ever could have taken on myself.

Today, I wanted to honor this milestone in my career by sharing the blog post I published on my old website the week I submitted my resignation, which was back in December 2009.

If you’ve been thinking about taking the leap, I hope reading these words from that pivotal time in my life offers some insight for your journey as well.
