Quiz: Are You Living in the Past, Present or Future?

March 4, 2013 | By Rosetta |

1267744_87396573

When I reflect on where I am in my life at this point, I’m grateful that I can say I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. I feel good about the work I’m doing now and the lifestyle I get to live. But it’s when I regress to thinking about the past – those shoulda, woulda, coulda’s start plaguing my mind. It’s in those moments of regret that I begin to forget about all the accomplishments I’ve had since then and how many more I will experience in the years to come. On the flip side, when I look too far out into the future, I get overwhelmed with everything I need to do to manifest my long-term vision. I end up losing sight of how wonderful my life already is.

Where do you spend your own mental time? Is your thinking usually focused on past experiences, present opportunities or future improvements?

Take this quick quiz to help you think about where your mind dwells on a regular basis.

You might be living in the past if:

  • You constantly talk about all the great things you did in college…even though you graduated 10 years ago.
  • You often reminisce about how popular (or unpopular) you were in high school.
  • You still have a grudge against the girl who “stole” your boyfriend in the 8th grade.
  • You refuse to forgive the people who have wronged you over the years, even though it’s hurting you to hold onto the pain.
  • You frequently remind yourself of negative experiences you’ve had and mistakes you’ve made in your relationships, career, business, finances, health, etc.

You might be living in the future if:

  • You can’t wait until you finally “get to where you’re going” and perceive where you are right now as a placeholder for something better.
  • You go on Pinterest for hours at a time to search for and pin items you want “someday” for your home and closet.
  • You think that getting married will be the final “piece” in your life puzzle and don’t feel you will be complete until you find a husband.
  • You feel like you don’t have “enough” money/clothes/shoes right now and you’re constantly plotting on how to get more.
  • You’re looking for a “sponsor” to provide for you or waiting for something to come along and “fix” your life.

You’re probably living in the present if:

  • You carve out the time to do something that makes you happy every single day.
  • You take immediate action on opportunities that will help you achieve your goals instead of procrastinating until “later.”
  • You focus on what’s already good in your life instead of on all the things that could be better.
  • You make decisions based on what you want to do with your life right now, not on what might happen if you meet your potential husband next month.
  • You intentionally spend money to enjoy valuable life experiences, instead of saving every dollar of your income for retirement or a “rainy day.”

The truth is, we all spend mental energy in each of these three timeframes. The key is to be honest about when we find ourselves dwelling too much in one domain to the point where it hinders our overall well-being and progress. This brief quiz hopefully got you thinking about your own mental habits and how you might adjust your mindset to be more productive.

All I know is that for me, I definitely feel much happier when I commit to living in the present than when I focus too much on the past or the future.

When you look at your own time, do you spend the majority of it living in the past, present or future? What ratio do you think is most useful to your own happiness and personal growth?

This is the Year of Choosing

February 25, 2013 | By Rosetta |

My theme word for 2013 is DESIRE. And I’ve begun to notice how it’s already showing up in two main areas of my life map: relationships and business.

I’m being reminded of how much freedom there is in getting clear about what you really want. There is liberation in creating a vision for what you want your life to look like. And there is ongoing affirmation in taking that first step and watching in wonder as the universe paves a path for you.

2013 is already showing up with a whirlwind of clarity, handing me a mandate to shift the way I’ve been thinking about what’s possible for my life.

This is the year of choosing to do what you want to do, not what you think you should do. This is the year of not waiting for permission. This is the year you stop needing outside validation to make the choices you already know are right for you.

If you want to launch your own business this year, begin the process right now. If you want to find a better job, start networking to see what opportunities are out there. If you want to enter into a new romantic relationship, let it be known.

You don’t have to wait to be “chosen.” You can choose. (click to tweet this quote!)

Desire, as good as it sounds, is really only about knowing what you want. Choosing is deciding to actually go after it. Whether it’s a man or a client, it’s time to make your move.

Be willing to leave your comfort zone. To have a different life, you have to do different things. Allow the universe to show you a new way. (click to tweet this quote!)

This is the year of choosing instead of waiting to be chosen.

What will you choose this year?

What to Do When You Feel Lost and Stuck in Your Business

February 18, 2013 | By Rosetta |

“Trust in what you love, continue to do it, and it will take you where you need to go.” – Natalie Goldberg

I love talking about the possibilities of entrepreneurship and the freedom it can bring into your life. But I also believe it’s just as important to talk about the pitfalls as well. Today’s post is about my own pitfalls and the most painful year I’ve experienced in my business so far.

***

2011 was not a very good year for me. I had just quit my job the year before and was riding high off my first year of self-employed success. In 2010, I’d brought in a hefty income from my business. But in 2011, I made about $20,000 less. I lost a big consulting contract and I didn’t know how to immediately replace that money.

For the first time in years, I felt lost in my career.

Without the structure of an organization giving me a steady direct deposit, I didn’t know what my worth was anymore. I wasn’t sure what my true value was in the marketplace and that scared the shit out of me. I wasn’t used to that feeling, that knot in my stomach that appeared whenever I thought about where my next check was gonna come from.

This wasn’t me, man. The Rosetta I knew had everything planned out in advance. She had always been a high performer and an overachiever. Why should this business thing be any different? I was used to being successful at everything I did. But as a result of making one decision to quit my job, I felt like I had forfeited my identify in many aspects of my life.

Slowly, I began to fall into a depression over a period of several months. I noticed that I stopped going out as much as I used to. I wasn’t taking care of myself very well. There were weeks when I didn’t clean my apartment, when I just let the dishes pile up in the sink. I just didn’t have the energy to do much more than sit in my little makeshift home office in the corner of my studio, doodling in my notebooks trying to figure it all out.

During that time, I probably had some good days, but most of them were pretty rough. I felt unsure of myself all the time, which I wasn’t used to and definitely didn’t like.

I felt like I was failing.

The only thing I knew for sure is that I didn’t want to stay there, in that place of fear. Here’s some things I did that helped me push through the mental roadblocks to get my business back on track. If you’re feeling stuck between a rock and a hard place right now, they might help you, too.

Repeat a Daily Affirmation or Mantra

I didn’t have money to pay a therapist, so I sought out other resources to help me stay motivated as my business took a nosedive. What I kept coming back to during that difficult time were written and verbal affirmations like this one: Fear flows through me but it is not me. I am bigger than fear. I am beyond fear. Fear does not define me. I am not fear. I started choosing an inspiring quote or mantra to repeat in the mornings (that I often posted to Twitter as well). I began to read the daily passage from Mark Nepo’s The Book of Awakening (a fantastic book that I continue to use as part of my meditation practice). Through ongoing positive self-talk, I was able to shut off my stupid lizard brain long enough to remember that I still had something of value to offer the world.

Try Something New in Your Personal Life

In June 2011, I decided to try something new on the health front by embarking on a 21-day cleanse that required me to eliminate meat, dairy, sugar, caffeine and alcohol from my diet. All the good stuff LOL. During the cleanse, I began to get my energy back in a big way and started cooking for myself regularly again. A few months later, I made another big change by moving out of my apartment to reduce my living expenses, experience alternative living arrangements and save money for a trip abroad. This decision not only helped me do all of the above, but also inspired me to simplify my life and make room for other parts to emerge.

Go Somewhere to Relax and Get Out of Your Head

In late November 2011, I took a business trip to Honolulu, Hawaii to speak at a conference and decided to stay there for almost a month. It was a good opportunity for me to be out of my normal environment. I spent a lot of time on the island pretty much just doing nothing. Thinking, reading, eating, going to the beach. And writing. Lots of writing. My trip to Hawaii helped me get back to my center and reconnect with the vision for my ideal life. When I got back to the mainland, I was able to get out of “stuck” mode and start translating my deepest desires into actual plans for my business.

Rededicate Yourself to Doing What You Love

That year, I had to try really hard not to apply for full-time jobs. And believe me, I looked! I even got a few casual job offers through my network. The fork in the road was clear; I knew could always go back to a 9 to 5. Instead, I promised myself that as long as I kept getting enough clients to pay my bills, I would stay in business. Still, it seemed like I kept asking myself the same question. What do you love doing the most? The answer kept ricocheting like an echo in a deep cave: writing and teaching. If I’m honest with myself (and with you), I can admit that my answer has not actually changed much since I was in the first grade and the teacher used to ask us what we wanted to be when we grew up. In 2011, I taught my last course as an adjunct professor and began to teach more of my own workshops online. I rededicated myself to building my business around doing exactly what I loved. And when 2012 rolled around,  I had a rough plan for how to make it happen.

As a result, 2012 was my biggest year ever in terms of paid speaking engagements, book sales and online workshops.

Now that I can look back with some perspective, I know that I had to go through that year of feeling lost and being stuck to get to this point. I had to be reminded that I already have everything I need to be successful.

And that if I will just trust the universe and stay committed to my purpose, it will take me where I need to go.

Have you ever felt lost or stuck in your business? What eventually helped you start moving forward again?

Empty Your Bag

February 7, 2013 | By Rosetta |

Imagine for a moment that you’re going on a trip today. You’re taking a plane to your dream destination, all expenses paid.

You arrive early to the airport, free plane ticket in hand, excited to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. You get to security and they won’t let you through. Puzzled, you start to panic. You were careful not to pack anything on the “banned” list. All your liquids are in 3 oz. containers. What could possibly be wrong?

The TSA agent takes a look at your boarding pass. “I’m sorry ma’am,” he says, frowning down at you from the conveyor belt. “Your trip is free, but there’s just one catch.”

You breath a sigh of relief. Just one catch? OK.

“You have to empty your bag.”

What? You’re confused. He shakes his head, as if he sees this situation every day. With a weary look, he hands you a piece of paper. “Read this,” he says. “It will all make sense.”

In big letters, at the top of a thick sheet of paper, are the words:

BEFORE YOU CAN ENJOY THIS TRIP, YOU MUST EMPTY YOUR BAG.

The following items are NOT allowed:

  • limiting beliefs
  • excuse-making
  • playing the victim
  • baggage from past relationships
  • self-sabotage and procrastination
  • …and any others that prevent you from being your best self

Turns out, the destination is life. And to enjoy it fully, you have to empty your bag.

Where would you begin?

We Fear Things That Cannot Hurt Us

November 24, 2012 | By Rosetta |

“Whatever you fear most has no power – it is your fear that has the power.” – Oprah Winfrey

I experience the feeling of fear about a lot of things in my life.

I’m afraid that my business will “fail.” More specifically, I fear that one of these days, no one will want to hire me to do anything anymore.

There Are a Million Ways to Get What You Want

November 17, 2012 | By Rosetta |

Back in 2009, I thought I needed a PhD to change the world. I wanted to write books and journal articles and conduct research that would totally redefine the way we view leadership. So what did I do? I applied to a PhD program, got in, took out a $10,000 loan and went back to school. I even went part-time at my job so I could use as much time as possible for research and writing papers.

I was all in.

How Much Are You Investing in the Business of You?

November 16, 2012 | By Rosetta |

Today, I attended a half-day workshop hosted by the Virginia Chapter of the National Speakers Association. The workshop was called “The Story Finder: How to Create New Stories in 10 Minutes or Less!” and was presented by a fantastic speaker named Ed Tate. As a first-time attendee, I only had to pay $47, yet I easily received at least 10 times the value of the workshop fee. Not only did Ed give us concrete tools to create compelling stories for our speeches, but he also dropped some valuable knowledge about the speaking business itself. I took so many notes today, my head is spinning LOL.

Proceed As the Way Opens: A Stress-Free Guide to Making Decisions

November 8, 2012 | By Rosetta |

“Remember, there are no mistakes, only lessons. Love yourself, trust your choices, and everything is possible.” – Cherie-Carter Scott

This morning, I sat in meditation, feeling overwhelmed by several decisions I have to make over the next few weeks. As usual, I began by reading the daily passage from Mark Nepo’s The Book of Awakening. His words have truly been a calming force in my life, especially as a bridge to my meditation practice. After I finished reading, I closed my eyes and sat cross-legged on my yoga mat. As I began to breathe in slowly, I could feel silence surrounding me.
